국어 낭독체 발화의 운율경계 예측 (Prediction of Break Indices in Korean Read Speech)

  • This study aims to model Korean prosodic phrasing using CART(classification and regression tree) method. Our data are limited to Korean read speech. We used 400 sentences made up of editorials, essays, novels and news scripts. Professional radio actress read 400sentences for about two hours. We used K-ToBI transcription system. For technical reason, original break indices 1,2 are merged into AP. Differ from original K-ToBI, we have three break index Zero, AP and IP. Linguistic information selected for this study is as follows: the number of syllables in ‘Eojeol’, the location of ‘Eojeol’ in sentence and part-of-speech(POS) of adjacent ‘Eojeol’s. We trained CART tree using above information as variables. Average accuracy of predicting NonIP(Zero and AP) and IP was 90.4% in training data and 88.5% in test data. Average prediction accuracy of Zero and AP was 79.7% in training data and 78.7% in test data.

The Aquisition and Description of Voiceless Stops of Spanish and English

  • This presents the preliminary results from work in progress of a paired study of the acquisition of voiceless stops by Spanish speakers learning English, and American English speakers learning Spanish. For this study the hypothesis was that the American speakers would have no difficulty suppressing the aspiration in Spanish unaspirated stops; the Spanish speakers would have difficulty acquiring the aspiration necessary for English voiceless stops, according to Eckman's Markedness Differential Hypothesis. The null hypothesis was proved. All subjects were given the same set of disyllabic real words of English and Spanish in carrier phrases. The tokens analyzed in this report are limited to word-initial voiceless stops, followed by a low back vowel in stressed syllables. Tokens were randomized and then arranged in a list with the words appearing three separate times. Aspiration was measured from the burst to the onset of voicing(VOT). Both the first language (Ll) tokens and second language (L2) tokens were compared for each speaker and between the two groups of language speakers. Results indicate that the Spanish speakers, as a group, were able to reach the accepted target language VOT of English, but English speakers were not able to reach the accepted range for Spanish, in spite of statistically significant changes of p<.OOl by speakers in both groups of learners. A closer analysis of the speech samples revealed wide variability within the speech of native speakers of English. Not only is variability in English due to the wide range of VOT (120 msecs. for English labials, for example) but individual speakers showed different patterns. These results are revealing for the demands requied in experimental designs and the number of speakers and tokens requied for an adequate description of different languages. In addition, a simple report of means will not distinguish the speakers and the respective language learning situation; measurements must also include the RANGE of acceptability of VOT for phonetic segments. This has immediate consequences for the learning and teaching of foreign languages involving aspirated stops. In addition, the labelling of spoken language in speech technology is shown to be inadequate without a fuller mathematical description.

Coarticulation and vowel reduction in the neutral tone of Beijing Mandarin

  • The neutral tone is one of the most important distinguishing features in Beijing Mandarin, but there are two completely different views on its linguistic function: a special tone(Xu, 1980) versus weak stress(Chao, 1968). In this paper, the acoustic manifestation of the neutral tone will be explored to show that it is closely related to weak stress. 122 disyllabic words in which the second syllable carries the neutral tone, including 22 stress pairs, were uttered by a native male speaker of Beijing dialect and analysed by Kay Digital Sonagraph 5500-1. The results of the acoustic analysis are presented as follows: 1) The first two formants of the medial and the syllabic vowel moves towards that of central vowel with a greater magnitude in the syllable with the neutral tone than in the syllable with any of the four normal tones. Also the vowel ending, and nasal coda /n/ and / / in the syllable with the neutral tone tends to be deleted. 2) In the syllables with the neutral tone, there are strong carryover coarticulations between the medial and syllabic vowel and the preceding unvoiced consonant. In general, the vowel is affected to move towards the position of the central vowel with more greater magnitude by coronal consonant than by labial or velar consonant. 3) In the syllable with the neutral tone, when and only when it precedes a syllable with tone-4, the high vowel following [f], [ts'], [s], [ts'], [s], [tc'] or [c] tends to be voiceless. 4) It can be seen from the acoustical results of 22 stress pairs that the duration of the syllable with the neutral tone is on the average reduced to 55% of that of the syllable with the four normal tones, and the duration of the final in the syllable with neutral tone is on the average reduced to 45% of that of the final in the syllable with the four normal tones(Lin & Yan 1980). 5) The FO contour of the neutral tone is highly dependent on the preceding normal tone(Lin & Yan 1993). For a number of languages it has been found that the vowel space is reduced as the level of stress placed upon the vowel is reduced(Nord 1986). Therefore we reach the conclusion that the syllable with neutral tone is related to weak stress(Lin & Yan 1990). The neutral tone is not a special tone because the preceding normal tone.

A PHONEMIC ANALYSIS OF THE UNWRITTEN LANGUAGE OF THE PULANG TRIBE

  • The purpose of this study was to create letters for of nonliterary Pulang tribe in Thailand those who immigrant from China. illiterate Pulang tribe hand down their tradition by primary oral culture therefore their tradition can't initiate and keep, moreover, it may disappear throughout history. So it is expected to crusade against unlettered people. The scheme of research adopted in this study was a minority race who habitate at the northern Machan, Chiangrai in Thailand. It is not only analysis of language but also the eradication of literacy and the research based on linguistic, ethnolinguistic, and primary oral culture. Five Pulang people who live in that area were chosen for creating letters. By using the I. P. A., after each word was listen to their pronunciation one by one it was described and repeated this process several times; the material words and humanbody were pointed in front of them while other words were described by gesture. For final description, number of people were in the lineup for listening the sound of words and phrases to sentences. In the first stage, it was an analysis segmental of Pulang: vocoid, contoid and diphthong were described with each sample syllables and words. The suprasegmental were studied with intonation and juncture of the words in the second stage. Two words were compared and different meanings within their intonation and juncture were shown. At the end of this part, each case of phonemic or morphophonemics representation described the juncture in the words. In the third stage, minimal pairs were analyzed with vowels and consonants and described in free variation based on words. In the last stage, syllable structure in open syllable and closed syllable was studied and then each syllable of its structure was analyzed with samples. There were thirty-two phonemes in apong Pulang as follows: seven vocoids; a, i, e, o, u, ${\ae}$, and $\wedge$, one diphthong; wu, 24 contoids; b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, k, 1, m, n, ${\eta}, {\;}p^{h}$, p, p, r, s, s, sh, t, t, w, and y. Their pronunciations of p, s, d, $p^{h}$, j, and t are frequently used in speech and are unique in triphthong. Moreover, most of the words used initial and final consonant cluster.

A Korean CAPTCHA Study: Defeating OCRs In a New CAPTCHA Context By Using Korean Syllables

  • Internet is being used for several activities by a great range of users. These activities include communication, e-commerce, education, and entertainment. Users are required to register regarding website in order to enroll web activities. However, registration can be done by automated hacking software. That software make false enrollments which occupy the resources of the website by reducing the performance and efficiency of servers, even stop the entire web service. It is crucial for the websites to have a system which has the capability of differing human users and computer programs in reading images of text. Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Human Apart (CAPTCHA) is such a defense system against Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. OCR can be defined as software which work for defeating CAPTCHA images and make countless number of registrations on the websites. This study proposes a new CAPTCHA context that is Korean CAPTCHA by means of the method which is splitting CAPTCHA images into several parts with random rotation values, and drawing random lines on a grid background by using Korean characters only. Lines are in the same color with the CAPTCHA text and they provide a distortion of image with grid background. Experimental results show that Korean CAPTCHA is a more secure and effective CAPTCHA type for Korean users rather than current CAPTCHA types due to the structure of Korean letters and the algorithm we are using: rotation and splitting. In this paper, the algorithm of our method is introduced in detail.

Development and Application of Horticultural Kit for Children's Horticulture Education

  • Background and objective: For effective horticultural education, it is required to develop kits for practice. In this study, we developed a horticultural kit for germination that introduces storytelling, characterization, and assembly, and investigated the educational effects of using it to study its educational differentiation and usefulness. Methods: First, we developed a seed germination kit for learning. It consists of three components: the kit main frame for hydroponics, the activity sheet for storytelling, and the instruction manual. It is made into an acrylic assembly in consideration of the ease of delivery for contactless learning. Second, we developed two programs, each using a germination kit for horticultural education (experimental group) and a general germination kit program (control group). At this time, the class consists of pre-questionnaire, the 1st and 2nd classes, observation log writing (total six times for two weeks), the 3rd class, and post-questionnaire. The experimental group and control group were separately executed. Third, the application results were compared and analyzed before and after class. As a quantification questionnaire, the effects before and after class were compared through t-test with a questionnaire on program satisfaction and attitude change toward plants. The quantitative results were analyzed through observation activity sheets and effects before and after the class were analyzed through t-test with quantification and language coding. Results: The effect of horticulture education using the developed kit was estimated by a quantification questionnaire. Both the program satisfaction and the change in attitude toward plants showed high in the experimental group, and this difference was statistically significant (p < .05). As a result of analyzing the observation paper with a qualitative questionnaire, various cognitive and affective expressions appeared in the experimental group as well as the contents of the observation paper. The number of syllables and various qualitative expressions appeared, and these differences were also statistically significant (p < .05). Conclusion: Compared to general germination activities, it was found that the germination activities using storytelling-based horticultural kits would be effective for contactless classes in the post-COVID-19 era and in increasing the educational effect of horticultural activities.

음성적 모음 축소 현상에 영어 자음의 유무성 환경이 미치는 효과 (Phonetic Vowel Reduction Conditioned by Voicing of Adjacent Stops in English)

  • This study aims to investigate whether shortened vowel duration conditioned by a following voiceless stop induces phonetic reduction of vowel space in English, and whether the reduction appears more in the height dimension than in the backness dimension (Lindblom, 1963; Flemming, 2005). Fifteen native speakers of American English read minimal pairs containing ten American English vowels in [bVd] and [bVt] syllables in a carrier phrase. All the subjects produced shorter vowels in the voiceless than in the voiced context. However, a reduction in vowel space and a raising of low vowels due to the shortened vowel duration were generally not found. To the contrary, the speakers tended to exhibit even more lowering of low vowels in the voiceless context, and vowel space was more commonly compressed in the backness dimension than in the height dimension. Many speakers, in particular, demonstrated fronting of the high back vowel [u] in the voiceless context. It was interpreted that due to a relatively large number of English vowels in the narrower low vowel space, the raising of low vowels may give rise to confusion in vowel contrasts, and therefore the degree of phonetic vowel reduction is restricted in that region. On the other hand, the high vowel region, being relatively spacious in English, allows a certain degree of phonetic vowel reduction in the F2 dimension. It is possible that heavy requirements for maintaining vowel contrasts may cause speakers to overachieve vowel target values, especially when faced with vowels which are difficult to distinguish due to shortened vowel duration, leading to an over-lowering of the low vowels.

안드로이드에서 힌디어 텍스트 처리 방법 (A Text Processing Method for Devanagari Scripts in Andriod)

  • 본 논문에서는 개방형 OS인 안드로이드에서 힌디어 텍스트 처리방법을 제안한다. 텍스트 처리의 핵심은 알파벳을 문자로 조합하는 규칙을 정의하는 오토마타와 폰트 파일에서 문자에 대응하는 이미지를 검색하고 이를 화면에 표시하는 폰트 렌더링이다. 오토마타는 입력 문자의 종류와 개수에 좌우되는데 유니코드를 기반으로 자음 14자와 모음 34자를 알파벳으로 사용하는 오토마타를 제안한다. 조합된 음절은 테이블 매핑 방식을 사용하여 그립 인덱스로 변환하고 해당하는 폰트를 로드하기 위한 핸들로 사용한다. 프리 타입 폰트엔진의 다국어 지원 프레임워크에 따라 제안방법을 별도의 모듈로 추가함으로서 시스템 수준에서 힌디어를 지원할 수 있다. 메시지 어플리케이션을 통해 제안방법의 타당성을 보인다.

시력, 폰트, 굵기, 성별에 따른 2음절 및 3음절 농약 제품 표시글자의 가독성 평가 (Legibility Evaluation of Two and Three Syllable Words Used in Pesticides According to Font, Thickness, Gender, and Visual Acuity)

  • 농약의 안전보건 정보 표시는 보통 농약병의 표면에 인쇄되어 있다. 그러나 농약의 적절한 표시를 위한 가이드라인이나 기준은 대부분 애매하거나 실용적이지 못하다. 본 연구의 목적은 시력에 따른 가독성 실험을 통하여 적절한 글자 크기의 가이드라인을 설정하는 것이다. 실험은 20대의 20명을 대상으로 근거리시력(0.6, ${\geq}0.8$), 성별, 글자체(세고딕, 중고딕), 글자의 굵기(plain, bold), 음절수(2음절, 3음절)가 농약 표시 글자의 가독성에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 가독성 평가를 위한 종속변수로는 정답률이 0%가 되는 최대글자크기, 정답률 100%가 되는 최소 글자크기, 주관적 불편도를 사용하였다. 실험 결과 가독성은 근거리 시력에 의해서만 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 정답률이 0%가 되는 최대 글자크기는 근거리 시력 ${\geq}0.8$에서는 2pt, 0.6에서는 2~3pt로 나타났다. 정답률 100%의 최소가독 글자크기는 근거리 시력 0.6에서는 9pt, ${\geq}0.8$에서는 5.3pt로 나타났다. 근거리 시력 0.6과 ${\geq}0.8$의 시력에 따른 글자 크기별 불편도는 0.6에서는 남,녀 모두 평균 15.5 pt에서 불편도 1(읽는데 전혀 불편함이 없음)에 도달하였으나 ${\geq}0.8$에서는 남자의 경우 평균 8.5 pt, 여자는 평균 10 pt에서 불편도 1에 도달하였다. 농약 표시 글자 크기에 대한 가이드라인은 중요성이 떨어지는 정보의 경우는 9 pt 이상, '농약' 표시나 독성 표시와 같은 안전상 중요한 내용의 경우는 16 pt 이상이 적절한 것으로 생각된다.

조기 유학 후 귀국한 초등학생의 발음 이상에 대한 음성학적 연구 (Phonetic analysis of Korean elementary students who had overseas study at early ages)

  • 목 적: 해외귀국학생들의 수가 매년 증가하고 있다. 이들은 우리말의 체계가 완전히 확립되기 전 다른 언어의 영향을 받고 성장하여 우리말의 이해가 어렵고, 발음이 어눌하여 학업이나 교우관계에 문제가 발생하게 된다. 본 연구는 해외귀국학생의 한국어발음 특징을 음향, 음성학적 방법으로 분석하였다. 방 법: 우리말의 파열음(ㅂ, ㅃ, ㅍ, ㄷ, ㄸ, ㅌ, ㄱ, ㄲ, ㅋ) 9개를 VCV 형식으로 녹음하여 폐쇄구간과 기식구간 길이와 비율을 측정하였다. 해외귀국학생 군과 국내거주학생 간 파열음의 조음오류의 비율과 유형을 비교하고 조음위치와 발성유형에 따른 음향음성학적 특성을 분석, 비교하였다. 결 과: 해외귀국학생 군과 국내거주학생 군 간 조음오류 비율은 해외귀국학생 군 19.4%, 국내거주학생 군 2%로 나타났다. 해외귀국학생군의 발음 오류 중 가장 많이 나타난 유형으로 발성 유형의 오류는 경음화, 조음 위치의 오류는 비음화 이었다. 해외귀국초등학생 군이 국내거주 초등학생군 보다 모든 조음위치와 발성유형에서 파열음의 폐쇄구간, 기식구간 길이가 유의하게 길게 나타났다. 그러나 대상군간 폐쇄구간 대 기식구간의 길이의 비율을 비교한 결과 유의하지 않았다. 결 론: 해외귀국학생은 국내거주학생보다 파열음 산출에 조음 오류가 더 자주 일어나며 국내거주학생보다 각 조음위치에 따른 발성유형을 분류하여 정확한 발음을 찾아 산출하는 우리말 발화속도가 느리다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 해외귀국초등학생 발음의 음향음성학적 문제점을 이해하고 추후 해외귀국초등학생의 조음을 평가하는 객관적인 자료에 도움이 될 것이다.
