  • The sintered density of uranium oxide pellets for pressurized water reactors is generally analyzed with pellet's samples completed with the sintering process. In this paper, the sintered density was analyzed by the newly developed method measuring the chromatography of ammonium diuranate, a precursor of uranium oxide, by a spectrophotometer (CM-5, Konica Minolta) before completing the sintering process. As a result of the sintered density analysis based on the brightness, color coordinate values (L, a, b) obtained from five ammonium diuranate samples by a spectrophotometer and the trend line of sintered density analyzed by a previous method, the sintered density with respect to the L value was observed with 0.9967 of the decision factor $R^2$. In case of a value, $R^2$ value was 0.9534 indicating lower reliability than that of the L value. However, b value with $R^2$ value of 0.4349 showed a very low correlation.

  • The powder mixture which has a bimodal size distribution, with a large mode corresponding to AUC-UO$_2$ powder and a small one corresponding to ADU-UO$_2$ powder, was prepared, pressed into compacts, and sintered at 1680t for 4 hours in hydrogen gas. The compact density of the powder mixture increases with increasing ADU-UO$_2$content within a content of 20 wt %, since small ADU-UO$_2$ particles can fill interstices between large AUC-UO$_2$particles. The UO$_2$ pellet made using the powder mixture has a lower open porosity than that made using AUC-UO$_2$ powder alone. The mechanism for the formation of a flake-like pore is proposed, and the decrease in open porosity may be ascribed to the decrease in the number of flake-like pores.

  • Generally, thermal analysis of spent fuel storage cask has been conducted using the porous media and effective thermal conductivity model to simplify the structural complexity of spent fuel assemblies. As the fuel assembly is composed of two regions; active fuel region corresponding to UO2 pellets and unactive fuel region corresponding to the top and bottom nozzle, the heat transfer performance can be influenced depending on porous media application at these regions. In this study, numerical analysis on concrete storage cask of spent fuel was performed to investigate heat transfer effects for two cases; one was porous media application only to active fuel region(case 1) and the other one was porous media to whole length of fuel assembly(case 2). Using computational fluid dynamics code, the three dimensional, 1/4 symmetry model was constructed. For two cases, maximum temperatures for each component were evaluated below the allowable limits. For the case 1, maximum temperatures for fuel cladding, neutron absorber and baskets inside the canister were slightly higher than those for the case 2. In particular, even though the helium flows with low velocity due to buoyant forces occurred at the top and bottom of unactive fuel region, treating only active fuel region as the porous media was ineffective in respect of the heat removal performance of concrete storage cask, implying a conservative result.

  • Open/closed porosity, pore size and its distribution and pore type as a funtion of sintered density of UO$_2$-20 wt%CeO$_2$ pellets were investigated. Pore appeared almost closed-type with the density above 96% of the theoretical density. Bimodal pore size distribution was observed regardless of the sintered density, but the number of pore decreased with increasing the sintered density. The shape of pore was changed from irregular shape to round type with increasing the sintered density.

  • This study aims at characterizing the rheological properties of uranium oxide powders for nuclear fuel pellets manufacturing. The flowability of these powders must be compatible with a reproducible filling of press molds. The particle size distribution is known to have an impact on the rheological properties and fine particles (<100 ㎛) are suspected to have a detrimental effect. In this study, the impact of the particle size distribution on the rheological properties of UO2 powders was quantified, focusing on the influence of fine particles. Two complementary approaches were used. The first approach involved characterizing the powder in a static state: density, compressibility and shear test measurements were used to understand the behavior of the powder when it is transitioned from a static to a dynamic state (i.e., incipient flow conditions). The second approach involved characterizing the behavior of the powder in a dynamic state. Two zones, corresponding to two characteristic behaviors, were demonstrated for both types of measurements. The obtained results showed the amount of fines should be kept below 10 % wt to ensure a robust mold filling operation (i.e., constant mass and production rate).

  • This work investigates the effects of Cr$_2$O$_3$ and oxygen potential on grain growth and densification of UO$_2$ pellets. Powder mixtures of UO$_2$ and 0.03-0.4wt% Cr$_2$O$_3$ were pressed and sintered in 3 different gas atmospheres: the $H_2O$-to-H$_2$ ratios were 5$\times$10$^{-4}$ , 1$\times$10$^{-2}$ and 3$\times$10$^{-2}$ In the first gas atmosphere the Cr$_2$O$_3$ contents below 0.2 wt% have an insignificant effect on grain size, but the Cr$_2$O$_3$ contents more than 0.3 wt% promote grain growth in the inner zone of a pellet but not in the outer zone. In both the second and third atmospheres, the grain size increases with the Cr$_2$O$_3$ content. With the same level of Cr$_2$O$_3$ content the grain size is larger in the second atmosphere than in the third. Sintering behavior and developed microstructure are discussed in terms of the reduction of C$r^2$O$^3$ to Cr, the dissolution of C$r^2$O$^3$ in UO$_2$, and liquid phase sintering.

  • The effect of TiO$_2$ on the sintering behavior of mixed UO$_2$-U$_3$O$_{8}$ Powder compacts has been investigated using the U$_{3}$O$_{8}$ powder made tv oxidation of defective UO$_{2}$ pellets. Without TiO$_2$, UO$_2$ pellet density is inversely proportional to U$_3$O$_{8}$ content and is below 94 %TD in the U$_3$O$_{8}$ range above 15 wt%. Using more than 0.1 wt % TiO$_2$, however, the density decreases slightly with U$_3$O$_{8}$ content and thus is higher than about 94% TD in the whole range of U$_3$O$_{8}$ content. The grain sizes of UO$_2$ pellets with more than 0.1 wt % TiO$_2$are larger than about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Therefore, the U$_3$O$_{8}$ Powder can be reused without any restriction on its amount in UO$_2$ pellet fabrication by sintering the mixed UO$_2$-U$_3$O$_{8}$ compact with the aid of TiO$_2$. Mechanisms for densification and grain growth are proposed and discussed, based on a dilatometry study and an examination of microstructure. microstructure.

  • The leaching behavior of uranium from unirradiated CANDU UO$_2$ fuel pellet in the spent fuel wet storage and disposal conditions has been investigated. A modified IAEA leach test method was used, and then the extent of leaching was monitored by analysis for uranium in the leachant. The leach test has been performed in various leachants(demineralized water and boric acid solution at pH=6, synthetic granite groundwater) for a long-term period of 5.4 years, and the effect of temperature on the leach rate of uranium has been analyzed. The leach rates of uranium at $25^{\circ}C$ were dependent on the leachants. Over initial 100 days of leach periods, the leach rate in groundwater was the highest in three leachants and no significant differences of leach rates ore observed in the demineralized oater and boric acid solution. But these leach rates in three leachants around 2,000 days at $25^{\circ}C$ appeared to be reached the steady rates in the range of 1~5$\times$10$^{-8}$ g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ day. The leach rate of uranium in groundwater shooed to be independent of the temperature, but those in both demineralized water and boric acid solution increased with temperature. These results show that the leaching behavior of uranium from UO$_2$ fuel in both the demineralized water ann boric acid may be controlled tv the surface oxidative.dissolution reaction of UO$_2$ and the leach rate of uranium in groundwater at room temperature could mainly be controlled by the complex reaction of dissolved uranyl ions with carbonate ions and no variation of leach rate of UO$_2$ in groundwater with temperature may be due to the local deposition of passivating uranyl phases on the surface.

  • This study was investigated on the recycle feasibility of the waste AC(Ammonium Carbonate) solution produ-ced in a commercial AUC(Ammonium Uranyl Carbonate) conversion plant. AUC particles were produced with the AC solution which was prepared with AC solid-agent instead of ammonia and carbon-dioxide gases. As the results particles of monoclinic shapes has been obtained regardless of the pH change if the carbonate concentration is sufficient in the mother liquore. Also a lot of twinned or aggregated particles were formed in case of the increase of pH in the reaction system but not affected in the change of temperature. Consequen-tly the characteristics of the particles which converted for AUC were produced withAC solution to UO2, particles specific surface area shape sintered density and others were similar to that of the particles which were produced with gases only when the pellets are fabricated in the nuclear fuel manufacturing process So the waste AC solution which is produced in the commercial AUC conversion plant is possible to recycle.

  • Air-oxidation experiments on unirradiated and irradiated UO$_2$ were performed at temperature from 150 to 375$^{\circ}C$ for investigating the long-term storage behavior of spent PWR fuel. The rate of oxidation was monitored by a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and an X-ray diffraction(XRD). The correlation between the onset-time for U$_3$O$_{8}$ formation and temperature was given as follows, logt(hr) = -12.89+7650/T(K), 423$_2$ pellet, the oxidation rate of irradiated UO$_2$ increase more rapidly at the initial stage and shows a lower saturation point at the later Stage. The Oxidation rate of high bumup UO$_2$ and gadolinia-doped UO$_2$(Gd$_2$O$_3$-UO$_2$) were observed to be much slower than that of unirradiated UO$_2$ pellets.s.
