Improvement on optimal design of dynamic absorber for enhancing seismic performance of nuclear piping using adaptive Kriging method

  • For improving the seismic performance of the nuclear power plant (NPP) piping system, attempts have been made to apply a dynamic absorber (DA). However, the current piping DA design method is limited because it cannot provide the globally optimum values for the target design seismic loading. Therefore, this study proposes a seismic time history analysis-based DA optimal design method for piping. To this end, the Kriging approach is introduced to reduce the numerical cost required for seismic time history analyses. The appropriate design of the experiment method is used to increase the efficiency in securing response data. A gradient-based method is used to efficiently deal with the multi-dimensional unconstrained optimization problem of the DA optimal design. As a result, the proposed method showed an excellent response reduction effect in several responses compared to other optimal design methods. The proposed method showed that the average response reduction rate was about 9% less at the maximum acceleration, about 5% less at the maximum value of the response spectrum, about 9% less at the maximum relative displacement, and about 4% less at the maximum combined stress compared to existing optimal design methods. Therefore, the proposed method enables an effective optimal DA design method for mitigating seismic response in NPP piping in the future.

  • Following the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident, the IAEA has issued a revised version of the Nuclear Safety Standard for beyond design basis earthquake to consider the core meltdown accident. In Korea, relevant laws and regulations were also revised to consider beyond design basis earthquake to nuclear components. In this paper, CAV, an seismic damage factor that determines the restart of nuclear power plant after operating breakdown earthquake, is proposed for extension to the beyond design basis earthquake. For pipings not satisfying the beyond design basis earthquake condition, several evaluation methods are suggested, such as strain-based evaluation methods, simple nonlinear analysis method and cumulative damage evaluation method.

  • In the design of class 1 components to apply ASME code section III NB, a fatigue is considered as one of the important failure mechanisms. Fatigue analysis procedure and standard fatigue design curve(S-N curve) is suggested in ASME code, which had to be performed to meet the integrity of components at the design step. As the plant life extension for operating power plants and the long-lived plant design, however, are being progressed, the fact which the existing ASME fatigue design curve can not consider fatigue effects sufficiently comes to the fore. To find the technical solution for these problems, a number of researches and discussion are continued up to now. In this study, the detailed fatigue analyses using the 3 dimensional modeling for the fatigue-weakened components were performed to develop the optimized fatigue analysis procedure and their results are compared with other reference solutions.

On the Particle Swarm Optimization of cask shielding design for a prototype Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor

  • For the continuous operation of a nuclear reactor, burnt fuel needs to be replaced with fresh fuel, where appropriate (ex-vessel) fuel handling is required. Particularly for the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) refueling, its process has unique challenges due to liquid sodium coolant. The ex-vessel spent fuel transportation should concern several design features such as the radiation shielding, decay-heat removal, and inert space separated from air. This paper proposes a new design optimization methodology of cask shielding to transport the spent fuel assembly in a prototype SFR for the first time. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm had been applied to design trade-offs between shielding and cask weight. The cask is designed as a double-cylinder structure to block an inert sodium region from the air-cooling space. The PSO process yielded the optimum shielding thickness of 26 cm, considering the weight as well. To confirm the shielding performance, the radiation dose of spent fuel removed at its peak burnup and after 1-year cooling was calculated. Two different fuel positions located during transportation were also investigated to consider a functional disorder in a cask drive system. This study concludes the current cask design in normal operations is satisfactory in accordance with regulatory rules.

Design of a direct-cycle supercritical CO2 nuclear reactor with heavy water moderation

  • A new reactor concept is described that directly couples a supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycle with a CO2-cooled, heavy water moderated pressure tube core. This configuration attains the simplification and economic potential of past direct-cycle sCO2 concepts, while also providing safety and power density benefits by using the moderator as a heat sink for decay heat removal. A 200 MWe design is described that heavily leverages existing commercial nuclear technologies, including reactor and moderator systems from Canadian CANDU reactors and fuels and materials from UK Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs). Descriptions are provided of the power cycle, nuclear island systems, reactor core, and safety systems, and the results of safety analyses are shown illustrating the ability of the design to withstand large-break loss of coolant accidents. The resulting design attains high efficiency while employing considerably fewer systems than current light water reactors and advanced reactor technologies, illustrating its economic promise. Prospects for the design are discussed, including the ability to demonstrate its technologies in a small (~20 MWe) initial system, and avenues for further improvement of the design using advanced technologies.

  • Feasibility study on conceptual design tool for liquid metal reactor has been conducted to optimize the thermohydraulic and neutronic design parameters. To accomplish this task the neutronic code PRISM, fuel performance code and scaling method have been included into the conceptual design support system. ALMR(PRISM 303MWe) has been adopted as the reference plant and principally according to the power level, conceptual design parameters are optimized so that energy balance and neutronics balance seem to be satisfied. This paper presents only the results of optimization on primary system including the IHX system.

Conceptual Design for Accelerator-Driven Sodium-Cooled Sub-critical Transmutation Reactors using Scale Laws and Integrated Code System

  • The feasibility study on conceptual design methodology for accelerator-driven sodium-cooled sub-critical transmutation reactors has been conducted to optimize the design parameters from the scale laws and validates reactor performance with the integrated code system. A 1000 MWth sodium-cooled sub-critical transmutation reactor has been scale and verified through the methodology in this paper, which is referred to advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR). a Pb-Bi target material and a partitioned fuel are the liquid phases, and they are cooled by the circulation of secondary Pb-Bi coolant and by primary sodium coolant, respectively. Overall key design parameters are generated from the scale laws and they are improved and validated by the intergrated code system. Intergrated Code System (ICS) consist of LAHET, HMCNP, ORIGEN2, and COMMIX codes and some files. Through ICS the target region, the core region, and thermal-hydraulic related are analyzed once-through. Results of conceptual design are attached in this paper.

A Concise Design for the Irradiation of U-10Zr Metallic Fuel at a Very Low Burnup

  • In order to investigate the swelling behavior and fuel-cladding interaction mechanism of U-10Zr alloy metallic fuel at very low burnup, an irradiation experiment was concisely designed and conducted on the China Mianyang Research Reactor. Two types of irradiation samples were designed for studying free swelling without restraint and the fuel-cladding interaction mechanism. A new bonding material, namely, pure aluminum powder, was used to fill the gap between the fuel slug and sample shell for reducing thermal resistance and allowing the expansion of the fuel slug. In this paper, the concise irradiation rig design is introduced, and the neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analyses, which were carried out mainly using MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle) and FLUENT codes, are presented. Out-of-pile tests were conducted prior to irradiation to verify the manufacturing quality and hydraulic performance of the rig. Nondestructive postirradiation examinations using cold neutron radiography technology were conducted to check fuel cladding integrity and swelling behavior. The results of the preliminary examinations confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the design.
