Concentration and Solvent Effects upon Carbonyl Streching Frequency Shifts of Raman Spectra: 4-Substituted Benzaldehydes

  • From Raman spectra, the ${\nu}g$C=O frequencies of 4-substituted benzaldehydes were found to correlate with the ${\sigma}_p$ values of the 4-x atom or group as well as the acceptor number (AN) values of solvents. In various solvents, the ${\nu}g$C=O frequency of benzaldehyde decreased upon the increase of benzaldehyde concentration. This shift was mainly due to the hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl oxygen and/or aldehydic proton of benzaldehyde and the solvent molecules. Over the 1-80 volume % change, the ${\nu}g$C=O frequency of benzaldehyde down shifted from 1709.4 $cm^{-1}$ to 1700.2 $cm^{-1}$ in CCl4 solution and from 1703.0 $cm^{-1}$ to 1698.0 $cm^{-1}$ in $C_2H_5OH$ solution. This is due to the fact that hydrogen bonding between the benzaldehyde and C2H5OH was much stronger than that between the benzaldehyde and the other solvents.

  • Background: Ketamine has an indirect sympathetic stimulation effect. We investigated heart rate variability (HRV) as a marker of cardiac autonomic function after a target controlled infusion (TCI) of ketamine with a plasma concentration of 30 or 60 ng/ml. Methods: In 20 adult volunteers, the mean of the R wave to the adjacent R wave interval (RRI), the range of RRI, the root mean square successive difference of intervals (RMSSD), the total power, the low frequency (LF, 0.04-0.15 Hz) power, the high frequency (HF, 0.15-0.4 Hz) power, the normal unit HF (nuHF), the normal unit LF (nuLF), the LF/HF ratio and the SD1 and the SD2 in the Poincare plot were measured before and after a TCI of ketamine. We observed for any psychedelic symptoms or sedation. Results: There were no differences in the mean and range of the RRI, RMSSD, total power, LF power, HF power, nuHF, nuLF, LF/HF ratio, SD1 and SD2 between before and after ketamine administration. The OAA/S score was higher and there were more psychedelic symptoms with a 60 ng/ml plasma concentration than with a 30 ng/ml plasma concentration. Conclusions: This study did not show any effect of a low plasma concentration of ketamine on the autonomic nervous system.

  • Let {$x_{nk}\;$\mid$1\;\leq\;k\;\leq\;n,\;n\;\geq\;1$} be an array of random varianbles and $\{a_n$\mid$n\;\geq\;1\}\;and\;\{b_n$\mid$n\;\geq\;1} be a sequence of constants with $a_n\;>\;0,\;b_n\;>\;0,\;n\;\geq\;1. In this paper, for array of row negatively associated(NA) random variables, we establish a general weak law of large numbers (WLLA) of the form (${\sum_{\kappa=1}}^n\;a_{\kappa}X_{n\kappa}\;-\;\nu_{n\kappa})\;/b_n$ converges in probability to zero, as $n\;\rightarrow\;\infty$, where {$\nu_{n\kappa}$\mid$1\;\leq\;\kappa\;\leq\;n,\;n\;\geq\;1$} is a suitable array of constants.

  • Let $\{X_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ be a sequence of pairwise negative quadrant dependent (NQD) random variables which are stochastically dominated by X. Let $\{a_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ and $\{b_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ be sequences of constants such that $a_n>0$ and $0. In this note a weak law of large number of the form $({\sum}_{j=1}^na_jX_j-{\nu}_n)/b_n\rightarrow\limits^p0$ is established, where $\{{\nu}_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ is a suitable sequence.

FISSION PRODUCT RELEASE ASSESSMENT FOR END FITTING FAILURE IN CANDU REACTOR LOADED WITH CANFLEX-NU FUEL BUNDLES

  • Fission product release (FPR) assessment for End Fitting Failure (EFF) in CANDU reactor loaded with CANFLEX-natural uranium (NU) fuel bundles has been peformed. The predicted results are compared with those for the reactor loaded with standard 37-element bundles. The total channel I-131 release at the end of transient for EFF accident is calculated to be 380.8 TBq and 602.9 TBq for the CANFLEX bundle and standard bundle channel cases, respectively. They are 4.9% and 7.9% of the total inventory, respectively. The lower total releases of the CANFLEX bundle O6 channel are attributed to the lower initial fuel temperatures caused by the lower linear element power of the CANFLEX bundle compared with the standard bundle.

Structure and Dynamics of Dilute Two-Dimensional Ring Polymer Solutions

  • Structure and Dynamics of dilute two-dimensional (2D) ring polymer solutions are investigated by using discontinuous molecular dynamics simulations. A ring polymer and solvent molecules are modeled as a tangent-hard disc chain and hard discs, respectively. Some of solvent molecules are confined inside the 2D ring polymer unlike in 2D linear polymer solutions or three-dimensional polymer solutions. The structure and the dynamics of the 2D ring polymers change significantly with the number ($N_{in}$) of such solvent molecules inside the 2D ring polymers. The mean-squared radius of gyration ($R^2$) increases with $N_{in}$ and scales as $R{\sim}N^{\nu}$ with the scaling exponent $\nu$ that depends on $N_{in}$. When $N_{in}$ is large enough, ${\nu}{\approx}1$, which is consistent with experiments. Meanwhile, for a small $N_{in}{\approx}0.66$ and the 2D ring polymers show unexpected structure. The diffusion coefficient (D) and the rotational relaxation time ($\tau_{rot}$) are also sensitive to $N_{in}$: D decreases and $\tau$ increases sharply with $N_{in}$. D of 2D ring polymers shows a strong size-dependency, i.e., D ~ ln(L), where L is the simulation cell dimension. But the rotational diffusion and its relaxation time ($\tau_{rot}$) are not-size dependent. More interestingly, the scaling behavior of $\tau_{rot}$ also changes with $N_{in}$; for a large $N_{in}$ $\tau_{rot}{\sim}N^{2.46}$ but for a small $N_{in}$ $\tau_{rot}{\sim}N^{1.43}$.

Optical and Dielectric Properties of Chalcogenide Glasses at Terahertz Frequencies

  • Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to study the optical and dielectric properties of three chalcogenide glasses: $Ge_{30}As_8Ga_2Se_{60}$, $Ge_{35}Ga_5Se_{60}$, and $Ge_{10}As_{20}S_{70}$. The absorption coefficients ${\alpha}({\nu})$, complex refractive index n(${\nu}$), and complex dielectric constants ${\varepsilon}({\nu})$ were measured in a frequency range from 0.3 THz to 1.5 THz. The measured real refractive indices were fitted using a Sellmeier equation. The results show that the Sellmeier equation fits well with the data throughout the frequency range and imply that the phonon modes of glasses vary with the glass compositions. The theory of far-infrared absorption in amorphous materials is used to analyze the results and to understand the differences in THz absorption among the sample glasses.
