Development of Side Jet Thruster with Nozzle Closure Separation Device (고기동 추진기관의 노즐개방형 측추력기 개발)

  • Side jet thruster using nozzle closure separation device provides a solid rocket with a trajectory shift function. Side jet thruster consists of low combustion temperature propellant, neutral type propellant grain and nozzle closure separation device. If a trajectory shift is required, side jet thrust is generated on the rocket by separating some nozzle closures located in the opposite direction to thrust. After completing trajectory shift, the other nozzle closures located in the thrust direction are separated to cease side jet thrust. The operation process is verified through ground static test. The result in this study can be applied to changing rocket trajectory by controlling side jet thrust through nozzle closure separation.

The effect of the number of nozzle holes on the energy separation (보텍스튜브의 노즐홀수가 에너지분리에 미치는 영향)

  • The vortex tube is a sample device for separating a compressed gaseous fluid stream into two flows of high and low temperature without any chemical reactions. The phenomena of energy separation through the vortex tube were investigated experimentally, to see the effects of the number of nozzle holes on the energy separation. The experiment was carried out with the number of nozzle holes from 1 to 10 by varying inlet pressure and cold mass fraction. The experimental results were indicated that the effective number of nozzle holes for the best cooling performance was found as 4. Also, to find effective use in a given operation conditions, the temperature difference of cold air and the cooling capacity of vortex tube was compared. The result is that cooling capacity was more important than temperature difference of cold air.

Energy Separation of Incompressible Fluid Using Vortex Tube (보텍스 튜브를 이용한 비압축성 유체의 에너지 분리)

  • The vortex tube is a simple device which separates fluid stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reaction. The process of energy separation in the vortex tube has caused a great deal of interest. Although many studies on energy separation in the vortex tube using air as the working fluid have been made so far, few experimental studies treated energy separation for incompressible fluid. So, an experimental study for the energy separation in the vortex tube using the water which is essentially an incompressible fluid is presented. When working fluid is the water, the best geometric values of nozzle area ratio and number of nozzle holes are 0.155, 6 respectively. These geometric values are showed by the similar values which are presented by compressible fluid as working fluid. But hot side mass fraction of which maximum temperature drop is happened are different from compressible fluid.

  • Dual pulse rocket motor is a variant of solid rocket motor with two propellant grain separated by a pulse separation device. The major performance of such a rocket motor is influenced by the change in the hole area of pulse separation device to nozzle throat area ratio. In this study, we performed flow analysis to investigate the internal flow characteristics according to the pulse separation device hole area to nozzle throat area ratio change. Gases used flow analysis were used combustion gas of HTPB/AP composite propellant and nitrogen gas. Flow analysis results of the dual pulse rocket motor were validated by comparison with experimental results of pneumatics. Commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 is used in this study to simulate flow analysis.

An Experimental Study on the Energy Separation of the $100Nm^3$/hr Vortex Tube for $CO_2$ Absorption ($CO_2$ 흡수용 $100Nm^3$/hr급 Vortex Tube의 에너지분리 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Vortex tube is the device that can separate small particles from the compressed gas, as well as compressed gas into hot and cold gas. Due to energy and particle separation ability, a vortex tube can be used as the main component of the $CO_2$ absorption device. In this study, experimental approach has been performed to analyze the energy separation characteristics of the vortex tube. To obtain the preliminary design data, energy separation characteristics of the vortex tube has been tested for orifice diameter, nozzle area ratio, and tube length. As a result, the orifice diameter is the major factor of the vortex tube design. The nozzle area ratio and tube length have a minor effect on the energy separation performance. For Dc=0.6D, AR=0.14~0.16, and L=16D, maximum energy separation has been occurred. The result from this study can be used as the basic design data of the $100Nm^3$/hr class vortex tube applied to the $CO_2$ absorption device. Compared with the $CO_2$ absorption process containing an absorption tower, the process with a vortex tube is expected to have a huge advantage of saving the installation space and the operating cost.

An Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Rectangular Supersonic Jet on a Flat Plate

  • The present study focuses on the characteristics of a supersonic jet flowing from a rectangular nozzle exit on a flat plate. Flow visualization techniques using schlieren and kerosene-lampblack tracing are utilized to investigate shock reflection structures and boundary-layer separations over a flat plate. Wall pressure measurements are also carried out to quantitatively analyze the flow structures. All observations are repeated for multiple jet flow boundary conditions by varying the flap length and nozzle pressure ratio. The experimental results show that the jet flow structures over the flat plate are highly three-dimensional with strong bleeding flows from the plate sides, and that they are sensitive to plate length and nozzle pressure ratio. A multi-component force measurement device is also utilized to observe the characteristics of the jet flow thrust vectoring over the plate. The maximum thrust deflection angle of the jet is about $8^{\circ}$, demonstrating the applicability of thrust vector control via a flat plate installed at the nozzle exit.

An Experimental Study on the Separating Effect of Pulverized Coal at Coal Nozzle with Coal Separator (석탄 노즐내 미분탄 분리장치의 입자 분리 효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutant emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle. Basically, a mixed flow of gas and particle in coal nozzle is required to have appropriate injection and concentration distribution at exit to achieve flame stability and low pollutant, but it is very difficult to obtain that without help of a coal separating device within nozzle. In this study, each distribution of air and coal flow rate is measured for the coal nozzle with coal separator developed by us. The coal concentration at exit is various according to inlet swirl values and positions of coal separator. Also pressure drop is measured for various operating conditions of this nozzle. From these results, we can find the separation characteristic of new developed coal separator, and select proper operation range of coal nozzle. When this coal nozzle is applied to actual plant, these investigations will be very useful to confirm the shape of coal separator to have efficient particle injection.

A PARAMETRIC STUDY OF CONICAL FRUSTUM GEOMETRY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF COOLING PERFORMANCE OF VORTEX TUBE (Vortex Tube 성능 개선을 위한 절두체의 형상 매개변수에 대한 연구)

  • Vortex tube is a thermal static device that separates compressed air into hot and cold streams. In general, the cooling efficiency of vortex tubes is lower than that of traditional air conditioning equipment and vortex tubes are mainly used for industrial spot cooling applications because of their quick responses. In this study, conical frustums are employed in the nozzle chamber to improve the cooling performance. Conical frustums can be used to decrease the ineffective mass fraction that directly passes through the cold exit without energy separation. The shape optimization of conical frustums has been performed using full factorial design. It is found that the height of frustums has the largest main effects on the cooling performance. Computational results show that the cooling performance can be increased by about 10% within the considered range of the design parameters. This is because the ineffective mass fraction toward the cold exit is decreased by about 20%.

An experimental study for cold end orifice of vortex tube (Vortex Tube의 냉출구 Orifice에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Vortex tube is a simple device which splits a compressed gas stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reactions. The phenomena of energy separation taking place in a vortex tube has been investigated experimentally. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air conditioner of special purpose. In this study, experimental study on vortex tube efficiency was performed with various cold end orifices and nozzles type. The experimental results indicate that there is an optimum diameter of cold end orifice and nozzle type for the best cooling performance. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the vortex tube surface provides useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube. The similarity relation for the prediction of the temperature of the cold exit air was obtained.

A Study for Energy Separation of Vortex Tube Using Air Supply System(II) - the effect of surface insulation - (공기공급 시스템에 적응되는 Vortex Tube의 에너지 분리특성에 관한 연구(II) -표면의 단열효과에 따른 영향-)

  • The vortex tube is a simple device which splits a compressed gas stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air supply system. In this study, the insulation effect of surface on the efficiency of vortex tube was performed experimentally. The experiment is carried out for nozzle area ratio of 0.194, diameter ratio of cold end orifice of 0.6 and input pressure ranging from 0.2Mpa to 0.5Mpa. The purpose of this study is focused on the effect of surface insulation of vortex tube with the variation of cold air mass flow ratio. The results indicate that the temperature difference of cold and hot air are higher about 12% and 30% than that of not insulated vortex tube respectively. Furthermore, for the insulated vortex tube, the similarity relation for the prediction of cold end temperature as the function of cold air mass flow ratio and input pressure is obtained.
