Y-jet nozzle has various advantages over other twin-fluid nozzles and are used in industrial boilers. However, it costs large energy consumption because of assisted air and its design is complex. The Y-jet nozzle is consisted of a liquid and gas port and a mixing chamber. The diameter of the port and the length of the mixing chamber greatly affect spray and atomization characteristics, therefore, they are the most important factors in nozzle design. In this study, The experimental setup is consisted of a laboratory scale spray system. The characteristics of the Y-jet nozzle according to the design parameters were observed. As a result, it was found that the length of the mixing chamber did not have effect on the flow rate and the choking condition. The droplet size was measured using a Malvern type measuring device. In addition, measurements were conducted in the front and the right directions of the nozzles. Based on the results, the SMD View Ratio is defined. It is the asymmetrical design characteristics of the Y-jet nozzle.
Recent common-rail injector of a diesel engine needs more smaller nozzle hole to meet the stringent emission regulation. But, small nozzle hole diameter can cause nozzle coking which is occurred due to the deposits of post-combustion products. Nozzle coking has a negative effect on the performance of fuel injector because it obstructs the fuel flow inside a nozzle hole. In this study DFSS (Design for six sigma) method was applied to find the effect of nozzle design parameter on nozzle coking. Total 9 injector samples were chosen and tested at diesel engine. The results show that nozzle hole diameter and K-factor have more effect on nozzle coking than A-mass and hole length. Large hole diameter and A-mass, small hole length and K-factor give more positive performance on nozzle coking in these experimental conditions. But, a performance about nozzle coking and exhaust gas emission shows the opposite tendency. Further study is needed to find the relation between nozzle coking and emission characteristic for the optimization of injector nozzle design.

A study on the variation of combustion characteristics by injector geometries was conducted. Coaxial swirl injectors were used. Existence of swirl chamber and variation of a nozzle length become key parameters. Injectors were identified as open, closed and mixed type by existence of swirl chamber. Variation of nozzle length was made extruding the both nozzle along the axis while other design parameters remain the same. A uni-element combustor with ablative material liner and a water cooled nozzle made by oxygen free copper with outer stainless steel casing were used.

Fuel injection system is an important tool in the exhaust emission and performance of a diesel engine. Effects of the fuel injection system in diesel combustion was investigated experimentally by measuring the performance and analyzing the combustion phenomena in a D.I. diesel engine. The selected injection parameters were nozzle opening pressure, nozzle projection length, and nozzle spray angle. From the measured results, it is shown that the fuel injection pipe diameter is an effective means to improve engine performance in a middle and high speed range and the 2 stage spring nozzle holder has the advantage of increasing the engine performance due to the initial injection pressure in a low speed range. It has been also shown that increasing nozzle opening pressure resulted in decrease in smoke, but increase in NO$_{x}$ from the engine.e.
This study describes the external spray characteristics of deflector nozzle such as the breakup procedures of liquid sheet, spray angle, breakup length and bubble behaviors of spray at deflector nozzle. In order to visualize the spray behaviors shadow graphy technique were used. According to the increase injection pressure, deveopment of the spray passes through the dribbling, distoted jet, closed bubble due to the contraction by form a conical sheet like as the simplex swirl atomizer. As trying the analysis of the ratio of bubble length and width it was found that the ratios is comparable. Spray cone angle was nearly $90^{\circ}$.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of properties of diesel and biodiesel fuels on the nozzle cavitation and the effect of the length/diameter(L/D) ratio on internal and external flow pattern of nozzle at the various injection conditions. In order to study the effect of the L/D ratio on the nozzle cavitation characteristics of diesel and biodiesel, the characteristics of cavitation flow in the nozzle are visualized and analyzed at the injection pressure of 0.1 MPa to 0.7 MPa by using the visualized images. It was founded that the cavitation was formed in the nozzle orifice at the low injection pressure and the breakup of the issuing liquid jet was promoted at the low L/D ratio. When the L/D ratio decrease, cavitation beginning and growth were affect by cavitation number and Reynolds number.

In many applications like the aircraft or the rockets/missiles, the flow from a nozzle needs to be expanded suddenly in an enlarged duct of larger diameter. The enlarged duct is provided after the nozzle to maximize the thrust created by the flow from the nozzle. When the fluid is suddenly expanded in an enlarged duct, the base pressure is generally lower than the atmospheric pressure, which results in base drag. The objective of this research work is to optimize the length to diameter (L/D) ratio of the enlarged duct using the CFD analysis in the flow field from the supersonic nozzle. The flow from the nozzle drained in an enlarged duct, the thrust, and the base pressure are studied. The Mach numbers for the study were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of the study were 2, 5 and 8. The L/D ratios of the study were 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Based on the results, it is concluded that the L/D ratio should be increased to an optimum value to reattach the flow to an enlarged duct and to increase the thrust. The supersonic suddenly expanded flow field is wave dominant, and the results cannot be generalized. The optimized L/D ratios for various combinations of flow and geometrical parameters are given in the conclusion section.
The Y-jet nozzle has benefits such as simple design and wide operating conditions. Because of these benefits, it is used in various combustion devices including industrial boilers. The most important variables in the design of the Y-jet nozzle are the mixing chamber length, the supply diameter of the liquid fuel and gas, and the exit orifice diameter. In addition, because of the use of a twin-fluid, optimized data is required depending on the spray condition. In this study, spray experiment was carried out under the pressure condition of 7 bar or more, which is the spraying condition used in industry. There was no change in flow rate with the length of the Y-jet nozzle mixing chamber, but the difference in SMD was confirmed. Adjusting the exit orifice diameter is most important to achieve the desired flow rate. Changes in the liquid and gas inlet port diameters ratio were found to be help improve the operating range and significant difference in SMD was observed.
The thrust vectoring concept has been used for use in new advanced supersonic aircraft. This study presents the performance characteristics of the thrust vectoring nozzle by visualizing the shock behaviors with Schlieren method. The scaled models were designed and manufactured to see the shock behaviors of the various airflow condition. Also we executed experimental tests to see the geometrical effects of the thrust vector nozzle by changing pitch angle and length of pitch flaps. From this study we could understand the supersonic flow characteristics of the thrust vector nozzle. The total thrust of thrust vector nozzle is diminished by increasing the flap angle. But there is an optimum flap length ratio for attaining the highest thrust level and proper pitch effect.
Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.
