Development of the Spark Torch Igniter for the 450 N-scale Methane-Oxygen Rocket Engine (450 N급 메탄-산소 로켓 엔진을 위한 스파크 토치 점화기 개발)

  • Adopting an engine igniter with high efficiency and ignition performance is essential for reliable operation of liquid rocket engines. In this study, we developed a spark torch igniter for a 450 N-scale methane-oxygen liquid rocket engine by conducting numerical analyses, igniter manufacturing and validation. Specifically, we conducted a parametric study for maximizing the enthalpy at the igniter exit, specifically by adjusting the mass flow rate, nozzle area ratio, fuel-oxidizer mixture ratio, and the igniter length-to-diameter. The heat transferred via the igniter nozzle exit was computed using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We also manufactured and tested the igniter based on a deduced design to confirm ignition performance of the designed spark torch igniter. The igniter developed through this study could contribute to the development of practical propulsion systems such as upper-stage engines of small launch vehicles.

  • Hanwha Corporation succeeded in domestic development of thruster heat shield for KOMPSAT-2 propulsion subsystem partly. Thruster heat shield, one of the main components of DTM, is designed to prevent the critical radiative heat exchange between thruster and satellite during firing. To overcome the manufacturing difficulties, an electro-forming process is preferred to classical welding process. In this case, an inner diameter of a new shield will be decreased a little due to the change of manufacturing process. The interference problem between thruster nozzle and heat shield was investigated through structural analysis by KARI. Hanwha manufactured heat shield based on the analysis results. In this paper, full development process is described for design, analysis, manufacturing of heat shield.

Direct-Write Fabrication of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell by Robo-Dispensing (로보 디스펜싱을 이용하여 직접묘화방식으로 제조된 고출력 소형 고체산화물 연료전지)

  • Line Shaped Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) with multilayered structure has been fabricated via direct-writing process. The cell is electrolyte of Ni-YSZ cermet anode, YSZ electrolyte and LSM cathode. They were processed into pastes for the direct writing process. Syringe filled with each electrode and electrolyte paste was loaded into the computer-controlled robe-dispensing machine and the paste was dispensed through cylindrical nozzle of 0.21 mm in diameter under the air pressure of 0.1 tow onto a moving plate with 1.22 mm/s. First of all, the anode paste was dispensed on the PSZ porous substrate, and then the electrolyte paste was dispensed. The anode/electrolyte and the PSZ substrate were co-fired at $1350^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere for 3 h. The cathode layer was similarly dispensed and sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. All the electrode/electrolyte lines were visually aligned during the direct writing process. The effective reaction area of fabricated SOFC was $0.03 cm^2$, and the thickness of anode, electrolyte and cathode was 20 $\mu$m, 15 $\mu$m, and 10 $\mu$m, respectively. The single line-shaped SOFC fabricated by direct-writing process exhibited OCV of 0.95 V and maximum power density of $0.35W/cm^2$ at $810^{\circ}C$.

Preparation of PEG Microparticles Containing Coriander Essential Oil Using Supercritical PGSS Process (초임계 PGSS 공정을 이용한 Coriander 정유 함유 PEG 미세입자 제조)

  • In the present study, biocompatible poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) microparticles containing coriander essential oil were prepared using a supercritical particles from gas saturated solution (PGSS) process to improve the stability of the coriander oil. The effects of various process parameters such as temperature, pressure, and nozzle diameter on the morphology and entrapment efficiency of coriander oil loaded PEG microparticles were then investigated. A positive influence on the formation of spherical microparticles was observed with increasing temperature and decreasing pressure. Furthermore, somewhat more porous microparticles were produced with an increase in pressure. At a given temperature, the highest entrapment efficiency of coriander essential oil in PEG microparticles was observed under the lowest experimental pressure condition.

  • The effects of swirl and combustion parameters on the performance and emission in a turbo-charged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L were studied experimentally in this paper. Generally the swirl in the combustion process of diesel engine promotes mixing of the injection fuel and the intake air. It is a major factor to improve the engine performance because the fuel consumption and NO$_{x}$ is trade-off according to the high temperature and high pressure of combustion gas in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine, it's necessary to thinking over the intake and exhaust system, the design of combustion bowl and so on. In order to choose a turbocharger of appropriate capacity. As a result of steady flow test, when the swirl ratio is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreased, whereas the gulf factor is increased. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emissions by optimizing the main parameter's; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13$^{\circ}$ CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.

A Study on Partial Admission Characteristics of a Multi-Stage Small-Scaled Turbine (다단 소형 터빈에서의 부분분사 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a radial inflow type turbine was applied and the outer diameter of the turbine rotor was 108 mm. The turbine blade on a circular plate disc was designed as an axial-type because its partial admission rate was 1.4-4.1%. The turbine consisted of three stages. The performance test has been conducted with various admission rates, tip clearances and nozzle flow angles. The turbine output power was measured on each stage. The turbine performance was obtained in a wide rotational speed range in order to compare its performance according to various operating conditions. The net specific output torque was also measured to compare its overall performance. Computational analysis was conducted for predicting turbine performance. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

An Analytical Study on Characteristics of a Diesel Injection System (디젤분사계의 특성에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • It is well-known that the fuel injection system if a diesel engine has taken a more important place in understanding of diesel combustion process with combustion chamber. But a diesel fuel injection system has an assembly of many complex and intricate problems such as the desired rate of injection, secondary injection and injection pump etc., in addition to the atomization for ignition and combustion, the penetration and diestribution for proper utilization of air. The analysis is carried out by simplifing and modeling the injection phenomena and dividing into three parts comprising of fuel injection pump, high pressure pipe and fuel injection nozzle. The purpose of this paper is to describe an analytical simulation of the injection system and to speed up the work of developing injection systems for new engines. The effects of important injection parameters as predicted by the present model are found to be in good agreement with experiment. It can be seen that there is an optimal pipe diameter for maximum quantity injected.

A Study of the Pollutant Formation and Spectral Radiation Properties in Ceramic Fiber Radiant Burner (세라믹 화이버 버너의 배기 배출물과 분광학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of mixing quality, inlet pressure, nozzle diameter on CO, NO emission and radiation characteristics in porous ceramic fiber radiant burners. Observations of combustion characteristics occurring inside the burner system which was insulated fiber mat, were investigated by measuring emission and radiation characteristics. Combustion was achieved at the firing rate of $88{\sim}99\;kcal/hr$, inlet pressure of $100{\sim}250mmH_2O$. The fiber burner exhibit significant both spectral intensity peaks in the bands at $2.5{\mu}m\;and\;4.0{\mu}m$ relatively. There is a small difference in the variable mixing tube. However spectral intensity increased with the firing rate. CO emissions were found to be strongly dependent on the operating conditions. There was a tendency that CO concentration increased as the firing rate increases. the reason for rise of CO concentration is that is becomes it the relatively rich condition. Relatively low NO emission was observed for the whole operating range. The NO concentration is maximal at the firing rate of approximately 2850 kcal/hr and an air ratio of about 1.

Experimental Study on Flame Extinction in Buoyancy-minimized Counterflow Diffusion Flame (부력의 영향을 최소화한 조건에서 대향류 확산화염의 화염 소화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experiments were conducted to clarify role of the outermost edge flame on low-strain-rate flame extinction in buoyancy-suppressed non-premixed methane flames diluted with He and $N_2$. The use of He curtain flow produced a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ in $N_2$- and He-diluted non-premixed counterflow flame experiments. The critical He and $N_2$ mole fractions at extinction with a global strain rate were examined at various burner diameters (10, 20, and 25 mm). The results showed that the extinction curves differed appreciably with burner diameter. Before the turning point along the extinction curve, low-strain-rate flames were extinguished via shrinkage of the outermost edge flame with and without self-excitation. High-strain-rate flames were extinguished via a flame hole while the outermost edge flame was stationary. These characteristics could be identified by the behavior of the outermost edge flame. The results also showed that the outermost edge flame was not influenced by radiative heat loss but by convective heat addition and conductive heat losses to the ambient He curtain flow. The numerical results were discussed in detail. The self-excitation before the extinction of a low-strain-rate flame was well described by a dependency of the Strouhal number on global strain rate and normalized nozzle exit velocity.
