  • In this paper, we present a tunable BPF with a novel structure. The filter is very useful to optimization of low frequency filter performance, because the fiilter has air-coils and tuning screws. This filter also has the merits of light weight and small size in comparison with conventional tunable filter at low frequency. This type filters are especially suitable for switched filter bank due to tuning structure. We designed 4 channel filter bank with two SP4Ts and 4 BPFs using novel structure. Tuning processes were subsequently executed. We obtained satisfactory performances as a result; consequently, the validity of our proposal was proved.

  • A novel photonic bandgap(PBG) structure is proposed and measured for wide bandgap and compact circuit applications. The proposed structure realizes the ultra-wideband bandgap(2-octave) characteristics by superposing two different PBG structures into a coupled double-plane configuration. A low pass filter fabricated using 3-period of the PBG cells shows 2-octave 10 ㏈ stopband from 4.3 to 16.2 ㎓ and 0.2 ㏈ insertion loss in the passband. Moreover, we confirmed that 44∼70 % size reduction can be achieved using the proposed PBG structures. We expect this novel double-plane PBG structure is widely used for compact and wideband circuit applications, such as compact high-efficiency power amplifiers using harmonic tuning techniques.

  • A novel design of compact low-pass filter based on microstrip structure and its equivalent-circuit model are developed. The philosophy of the structure behind this novel microstrip low-pass filter is simple as it is composed of a pair of symmetrical parallel coupled-line and an open-stub. With this configuration, a finite attenuation pole near the stopband cutoff frequency is available and adjustable by simply tuning the circuit parameters. Furthermore, the rejection bandwidth of this type of low-pass filter can be extended. In order to validate the feasibility of the proposed design method, a low-pass filter based on a microstrip structure is designed, fabricated, and measured. Experimental results agree very well with the simulation and analytical results.

  • Objective: Alongside the rise of animal-protection awareness in Taiwan, the public has been paying more attention to dog genetic deficiencies due to inbreeding in the pet market. The goal of this study was to isolate novel microsatellite markers for monitoring the genetic structure of domestic dog populations in Taiwan. Methods: A total of 113 DNA samples from three dog breeds-beagles (BEs), bichons (BIs), and schnauzers (SCs)-were used in subsequent polymorphic tests applying the 14 novel microsatellite markers that were isolated in this study. Results: The results showed that the high level of genetic diversity observed in these novel microsatellite markers provided strong discriminatory power. The estimated probability of identity (P(ID)) and the probability of identity among sibs (P(ID)sib) for the 14 novel microsatellite markers were 1.7×10-12 and 1.6×10-5, respectively. Furthermore, the power of exclusion for the 14 novel microsatellite markers was 99.98%. The neighbor-joining trees constructed among the three breeds indicated that the 14 sets of novel microsatellite markers were sufficient to correctly cluster the BEs, BIs, and SCs. The principal coordinate analysis plot showed that the dogs could be accurately separated by these 14 loci based on different breeds; moreover, the Beagles from different sources were also distinguished. The first, the second, and the third principal coordinates could be used to explain 44.15%, 26.35%, and 19.97% of the genetic variation. Conclusion: The results of this study could enable powerful monitoring of the genetic structure of domestic dog populations in Taiwan.

  • We proposed a novel feed structure for a broadband circular slot antenna. The proposed antenna has a circular slot, a radiating element, and a novel microstrip feed structure which is composed of a 50 Ω microstrip feedline and a circular-shaped microstrip patch. This antenna is analyzed and optimized by using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The impedance bandwidth of optimized antenna is 1.94 octave that is much broader than the conventional microstrip slot antennas.

  • This paper presents a novel feeding structure of the triple-band internal antenna which covers CELLVLAR/DCS/US-PCS bands. The proposed antenna consists of a U-slot patch radiator with a shorting post connected with ground plane and symmetric feeding lines with respective a feeding and shorting posts on both faces of the fixed FR-4 substrate. Through the simulation and experimental results, the proposed antenna is confirmed to have the features of less interference with a human head/body, broad bandwidth, desirable radiation patterns and efficiency for triple-band applications.

  • A 10" carbon nanotube field emission display device was fabricated with a novel structure with a hopping electron spacer (HES) by screen printing technique. HES plays a role of preventing the broadening of electron beams emitted from carbon nanotubes without electrical discharge during operation. The structure of the novel tetrode is composed of carbon nanotube emitters on a cathode electrode, a gate electrode, an extracting electrode coated on the top side of a HES, and an anode. HES contains funnel-shaped holes of which the inner surfaces are coated with MgO. Electrons extracted through the gate are collected inside the funnel-shaped holes. They hop along the hole surface to the top extracting electrode. In this study the effects of the addition of HES on emission characteristics of field emission display were investigated. An active ozone treatment for the complete removal of residues of organic binders in the emitter devices was applied to the field emission display panel as a post-treatment.

  • A novel silicon retina chip based on the information processing in the vertebrate retina was designed. The chip has a novel wiring structure in which all pixels are connected through the channel of MOS transistors, which simplifies a wiring structure compared with conventional resistive networks. The proposed structure minimizes the pixel area and certainly increases a fill factor since each pixel consists of only two photodiodes and three MOS transistors. It also enables the chip to operate over a wide range of light intensity by adjusting its conductance with the gate voltage. Simulation results with SPICE showed that the chip could extract the edge of input images successfully.

  • We propose a novel pixel structure using bootstrapped voltage programming for amorphoussilicon TFT backplane of AM-OLED (Active Matrix-Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays. The proposed structure is composed of two TFTs and one capacitor. It operates at low drive voltage ($0{\sim}5V$) which can reduce power consumption comparing with the conventional pixel circuit structure using same OLED material. Also, it can easily control dark level and use commercial mobile LCD ICs. In this paper, we describe the operating principle and the characteristics of the proposed pixel structure and verify the performance by SPICE simulation comparing with the conventional pixel structure.
