In order to develop the PHEV(plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), the specific power transmission systems considering the PHEV system characteristics should be applied. A PHEV applied to series-parallel type hybrid power transmission system is a typical example. In this paper, the novel hybrid power systems are proposed by analyzing the existing PHEV system. The backward simulation program is developed to analyze the fuel efficiency of hybrid power system. Quasi-static models for each components such as engine, motor, battery and vehicle are included in the developed simulation program. To obtain an optimal condition for hybrid systems, an optimization approach called the dynamic programming is applied. The simulation is performed in various driving cycles. A weakness for the existing system is found through the simulation. To compensate for a discovered weakness, novel hybrid power systems are proposed by adding or moving the clutch to the existing system. Comparing the simulation results for each systems, the improved fuel efficiency for proposed systems are verified.
This paper presents a novel single converter and single inverter (1Con-1Inv) topology for photovoltaic (PV)-fuel cell (FC) hybrid system and a new control scheme for the PV-FC hybrid system is then proposed. The new topology and the unique algorithm can minimize volume and production cost of the hybrid system. Moreover, system efficiency can improve due to reduction of losses of hardware components and other control factors are well regulated using just 1Con-1Inv with the help of the proposed control algorithm. The validity of proposed algorithm is verified both computer simulation using PSIM and Matlab/Simulink program and experimental with 700W of PV and 600W of FC system.
Energy-based methodology is utilized to design novel timber-steel hybrid core wall system. The timber-steel core wall system consists of cross laminated timber (CLT), steel columns, angled brackets and t-stub connections. The CLT wall panels are stiff and strong, and ductility is provided through the steel t-stub connections. The structural system was modelled in SAP2000 finite element program. The hybrid system is explained in detail and validated using first principles. To evaluate performance of the hybrid core system, a 7-story building was designed using both forced-based design and energy based design (EBD) approaches. Performance of the structure was evaluated using 10 earthquakes records selected for 2500 return period and seismicity of Vancouver. The results clearly served as a good example of the benefits of EBD compared to conventional forced based design approaches.
The rapidly growing demand for electric power systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) require simpler, cost-effective, and higher performance components. In this paper, a novel power conversion system for hybrid electric vehicles is proposed for these needs. The proposed power conversion system reduces the conversion system cost while preserving same functionality. The proposed power conversion system can boost multi-sources to drive a traction motor and to store energy at the same time reducing number of switching components. In this paper, all operational modes of the proposed converter are explained in detail and verified by a computer simulation first. Then, the topology and operational modes are experimentally verified. Based on the results, the feasibility of the proposed multi-mode single leg power conversion system for EV and HEV applications is discussed.
Harmonics and the reactive power related problems in the supply and demand side are increasing with the proliferation of nonlinear loads such as power converters in industrial applications. Filtering options such as passive, active and hybrid filters are countermeasures against these problems. In this study, a novel hybrid active filter topology with a new approach to enhance the system performance is presented. In this study, a novel hybrid active filter topology with a new approach to enhance the system performance is presented. The proposed topology comprised a parallel inverter and a hybrid active filter. It improves the system efficiency and reduces VA ratings, hence, overall filtering cost. The system operation, control and experimental verification on three phase rectifier and/or capacitor loads are presented.
In this study, a novel hybrid vehicle is proposed. The vehicle has a flywheel-engine hybrid system. Flywheels are more effective as energy charge systems than electric batteries in a respect of output power density. However, transmissions to effectively drive flywheels are very complex systems such as CVTs (Continuously Variable Transmissions). In the proposed hybrid vehicle, Constant Pressure System is employed, which is hydraulic power transmission. Using Constant Pressure Systems, hydraulic CVTs are easily realized with variable displacement pumps/motors. In this paper, firstly, the proposed flywheel hybrid vehicle making use of Constant Pressure System is described. Secondly, fuel consumption characteristics of the flywheel hybrid vehicle are experimentally examined with the stationary test facility, which employs a flywheel as a load emulating vehicle inertia. Finally, the experimental results and discussions are described. Fuel consumption of 26km/L is expected for 10 mode driving schedule with vehicle mass of 1500kg.
An electric scooter with a V-belt continuously variable transmission (CVT) driven by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has a lot of nonlinear and time-varying characteristics, and accurate dynamic models are difficult to establish for linear controller designs. A PMSM servo-drive electric scooter controlled by a novel hybrid modified recurrent Legendre neural network (NN) control system is proposed to solve difficulties of linear controllers under the occurrence of nonlinear load disturbances and parameters variations. Firstly, the system structure of a V-belt CVT driven electric scooter using a PMSM servo drive is established. Secondly, the novel hybrid modified recurrent Legendre NN control system, which consists of an inspector control, a modified recurrent Legendre NN control with an adaptation law, and a recouped control with an estimation law, is proposed to improve its performance. Moreover, the on-line parameter tuning method of the modified recurrent Legendre NN is derived according to the Lyapunov stability theorem and the gradient descent method. Furthermore, two optimal learning rates for the modified recurrent Legendre NN are derived to speed up the parameter convergence. Finally, comparative studies are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme through experimental results.
The maximum power point of a photovoltaic array alters with changing atmospheric conditions, temperature conditions, shadow conditions, so it is required to track maximum power point. As much as MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) is important in photovoltaic systems, many MPPT techniques have been developed. In this paper, several major existing MPPT methods are comparatively analyzed and novel hybrid MPPT algorithm is proposed. The proposed hybrid MPPT algorithm is developed in combination with traditional MPPT methods to complement each other for improving performance and mitigating partial shading effects. The proposed algorithm is validated by using PISIM simulation tool and experiment in 3kW system.
In this paper, a novel 3-DOF hybrid robot with enlarged workspace is presented for high speed applications. The 3-DOF hybrid robot is made up of one linear actuator and 2-DOF planar parallel robot in series. The actuation consists of one ball-screw to make one linear motion and two rotary ball-screws to transmit rotational motion to 2-DOF parallel robot. The workspace can be enlarged according to ball-screw stroke and the moving inertia can be reduced due to locating all the heavy actuators at the fixed base. The inverse kinematics and workspace analyses are presented. The robot prototype and PC-based control system are developed.
The inrush current of a large inductive load can be reduced with a soft starter; however, the large inrush current caused by simultaneous bulk starts (SBSs) cannot be effectively reduced. In order to reduce the high inrush current and voltage sag owing to the SBSs of large capacity inductive loads within a power network, a novel hybrid sequential start control system is proposed, implemented on embedded systems, and evaluated with a testbed in this study. From the experimental and simulation results of the proposed control system, the inrush current could be effectively restricted below the maximum current capacity of a power distributing board. Moreover, with the proposed system, power cost typically dictated by the peak power consumption can be fairly reduced, and the quality of the power system connected to the inductive loads can be efficiently increased.
