  • To investigate the characteristics of detailed flows in a building-congested district, we coupled a computation fluid dynamics (CFD) model to the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS), a current operational numerical weather prediction model of the Korea Meteorological Administration. For realistic numerical simulations, we used the meteorological variables such as wind speeds and directions and potential temperatures predicted by LDAPS as the initial and boundary conditions of the CFD model. We trilinearly interpolated the horizontal wind components of LDAPS to provide the initial and boudnary wind velocities to the CFD model. The trilinearly interpolated potential temperatures of LDAPS is converted to temperatures at each grid point of the CFD model. We linearly interpolated the horizontal wind components of LDAPS to provide the initial and boundary wind velocities to the CFD model. The linearly interpolated potential temperatures of LDAPS are converted to temperatures at each grid point of the CFD model. We validated the simulated wind speeds and directions against those measured at the PKNU-SONIC station. The LDAPS-CFD model reproduced similar wind directions and wind speeds measured at the PKNU-SONIC station. At 07 LST on 22 June 2020, the inflow was east-north-easterly. Flow distortion by buildings resulted in the east-south-easterly at the PKNU-SONIC station, which was the similar wind direction to the measured one. At 19 LST when the inflow was southeasterly, the LDAPS-CFD model simulated southeasterly (similar to the measured wind direction) at the PKNU-SONIC station.

  • Ddareungi, a public bicycle service in Seoul, establishes itself as a means of daily transportation for citizens in Seoul. We speculated that the pattern of using Ddareungi may have changed since COVID-19. This study explores changes in using Ddareungi after COVID-19 with descriptive statistical analysis and network analysis. The analysis results are summarized as follows. The average traveling distance and average traveling speed have decreased over the entire time in a day since COVID-19. The round trip rate has increased at dawn and morning and has decreased in the evening and night. The average weighted degree and average clustering coefficient have decreased, and the modularity has increased. The clusters, located north of the Han River in Seoul, had a similar geographic distribution before and after COVID-19. However, the clusters, located south of the Han River, had different geographic distributions after COVID-19. Traveling routes added to the top 5 traffic rankings after COVID-19 had an average traveling distance of fewer than 1,000 meters. We expect that the results of this study will help improve the public bicycle service in Seoul.

  • The national land survey is implemented for the purpose of accomplishing the basic goal called an effective development of national land through close survey on physical/social conditions and periodic/social requirements of national land. However, the situation is that there isn't much difference from other data because the data constructed at the local governments or other ministries are gathered to be processed and provided as national land index which is not a field survey while the situation is that the national land index are changed frequently according to domestic and foreign circumstances and transition so that the applicability is low because there is no data accumulated for a long period of time on the same index. Considering that most government offices and local governments are performing surveys out of their own unique necessity to construct the results followed by such survey as data which includes spatial data as a form of database since the importance of statistics data and map data has become highlighted recently, it is necessary to make a new approach in the aspect of investigating the current situation of national territory on the national level. Accordingly, this study has proposed a new national land survey system to prepare for unification of North and South Korea as well as to provide the decision making data necessary for setting up the policies for effective land development and value conservation of the national land.

  • This study analyzed the climate regime shift using statistical change-point analysis on the time-series tropical cyclone (TC) frequency that affected Japan in July to September. The result showed that there was a significant change in 1995 and since then, it showed a trend of rapidly decreasing frequency. To determine the reason for this, differences between 1995 to 2012 (9512) period and 1978 to 1994 (7894) period were analayzed. First, regarding TC genesis, TCs during the 9512 period showed a characteristic of genesis from the southeast quadrant of the tropical and subtropical western North Pacific and TCs during the 7894 period showed their genesis from the northwest quadrant. Regarding a TC track, TCs in the 7894 period had a strong trend of moving from the far east sea of the Philippines via the East China Sea to the mid-latitude region in East Asia while TCs in the 9512 period showed a trend of moving from the Philippines toward the southern part of China westward. Thus, TC intensity in the 7894 period, which can absorb sufficient energy from the sea as they moved a long distance over the sea, was stronger than that of 9512. Large-scale environments were analyzed to determine the cause of such difference in TC activity occurred between two periods. During the 9512 period, anomalous cold and dry anticyclones were developed strongly in the East Asia continent. As a result, Korea and Japan were affected by the anomalous northerlies thereby preventing TCs in this period from moving toward the mid-latitude region in East Asia. Instead, anomalous easterlies (anomalous trade wind) were developed in the tropical western Pacific so that a high passage frequency from the Philippine to the south China region along the anomalous steering flows was revealed. The characteristics of the anomalous cold and dry anticyclone developed in the East Asia continent were also confirmed by the analysis of air temperature, relative humidity and sensible heat net flux showing that most regions in East Asia had negative values.

  • Detailed bathymetry and magnetic survey data for Esmeralda Bank obtained by R/V Onnuri of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute in September 2007 were analyzed to estimate the locations of possible hydrothermal vents. The shape of Esmeralda Bank is caldera type opened in the western part. The summit is very shallow, about 50 meter b.s.l. and the bottom is about 1300 meter b.s.l. The western part of Esmeralda Bank is more steeper and topographic irregular than eastern part, and showed the valley made by erosion or collapse. The magnetic anomaly patterns of Esmeralda Bank located low anomalies over the north and high anomalies over the south. The magnetic anomalies are steep over the summits and gently smooth over the deep bottom. Two low magnetization zones are located in the summit and westside of Esmeralda Bank. The low magnetization zones of the summits of Esmeralda Bank suggest the possible existence of hydrothermal vent.

  • This study estimated the delay factor, which is the ratio of travel time at the speed limit and travel time at the actual speed using real-time traffic information in Seoul. The actual travel speed on the road was lower than the maximum speed of the road and the travel speed was the slowest during the rush hour. As a result of accessibility analysis based on travel speed during the rush hour, the travel time at the actual speed was 37.49 minutes on average. However, the travel time at the speed limit was 15.70 minutes on average. This result indicated that the travel time at the actual speed is 2.4 times longer than that at the speed limit. In addition, this study proposedly defined the delay factor as the ratio of accessibility by the speed limit and accessibility to actual travel speed. As a result of delay factor analysis, the delay factor of Seoul was 2.44. The results by the administrative district showed that the delay factor in the north part areas of the Han River is higher than her south part areas. Analysis results after applying the relationship between road density and traffic volume showed that as the traffic volume with road density increased, the delay factor decreased. These results indicated that it could not be said that heavy traffic caused longer travel time. Therefore, follow-up research is needed based on more detailed information such as road system shape, road width, and signal system for finding the exact cause of increased travel time.

  • We investigated the environmental conditions of natural habitats of T. nuda. The species was found on rocky northern hills ($60{\sim}90^{\circ}$) near the stream where the sea level ranges 95~145m. The average annual temperature of the habitats was lower than other places of South Korea. The differences of the lowest and the highest of the year was significantly huge than any other places. Plants were growing at the edge of stream that water reached but not submerged. Most of plants were found in North, Northeast or Northwest. It is suggested that these species require moist and low sunlight for growth. The common vegetation along with the T. nuda includes Mukdenia rossii, Selaginella rossii, Calamagrostis epigeios, and Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense. The dominance values and sociability of T. nuda were below 3 in all studied habitats and the variance of the number of individuals among the habitats was very high. As the optimum habitats for the T. nuda are decreasing due to the extreme precipitation patterns. It is also expected that the number of T. nuda will be decreased in the future. Therefore restoration activity in situ or ex situ must be conducted to conserve this valuable plant species.

  • The effect of directions (north to south vs east to west) of planting row, planting intensities (10/15, 15/15, 20/15, 25/15 cm/cm) and the number of rows consecutively (1,2, 3,4) for both the CMS and pollen parent in alternation, on the seed yield of CMS of rice was tested with a breeding line V20A/Iri342$\^$*8/. When the planting row was made in vertical direction to the wind direction during anthesis, the seed yield was higher than the other direction regardless the planting densities and number of rows consecutive. Seed yield increased as high as 46.9%. The higher planting intensities up to 10/15 cm/cm yielded the higher hybrid seeds. The highest yield was 81.2 kg/ha. The yield variation among plants within a plot and among the plants within a replication was relatively large. Increased pollen parent row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by reduced pollen parent row number. Reduced CMS parental row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by increased CMS parental row numbers. Considering the hybrid seed yield, parental seed yield and operational convenience, 4 rows of CMS and 1 row of pollen parent in alternate with 20/15 or 25/15 (cm/cm) planting densities seemed to be the rational layout.

  • Based on the Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) observation and serial oceanographic observation of National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) during July 2013 to July 2015, we examined the temperature variation in the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) in the East Sea. The UWE was always shown during the observation periods even though it was not the whole shape. The coefficient of variation (CV) was largest in the depth of 250 m at the side of the east coast of Korean Peninsula with $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ in temperature. CV of the horizontal distribution at 250 m depth was also largest in the region biased along the east coast of Korea. The warm eddy moved not only to the east-west direction but also to the north-south direction in the viewpoint of horizontal distributions of temperature. This region between the Korean Peninsula and Ulleung island also is the passage of the East Korean Warm Current. This means that interaction between the East Korean Warm Current and periphery of warm eddy makes large in the variation of movement along the east coast of Korean Peninsula. The largest variation of temperature at 250 m depth seemed to be significantly correlated with the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) underlying Ulleung Warm Eddy. It is suggested that the interaction between the ESIW and UWE is active in the mid-depth along the periphery of UWE.
