  • Purpose: This paper is a critical review of descriptive phenomenological methodology in Korean nursing research. We propose constructive suggestions for the improvement of descriptive phenomenological methodology in light of Husserl's phenomenological approaches. Methods: Using the key words of 'phenomenology,' 'experience,' and 'nursing,' we identify and analyze 64 Korean empirical phenomenological studies (selected from 282 studies) published in 14 Korean nursing journals from 2005 to 2018. The PubMed and the Korea Citation Index were used to identify the studies. Results: Our analysis shows that all the reviewed articles used Giorgi's or Colaizzi's scientific phenomenological methodology, without critical attention to Husserl's philosophical phenomenological principles. Conclusions: The use of scientific phenomenology in nursing research, which originated in North America, has become a global phenomenon, and Korean phenomenological nursing research has faithfully followed this scholarly trend. This paper argues that greater integration of Husserlian phenomenological principles into scientific phenomenological methodology in nursing research, such as participant-centered bracketing and eidetic reduction, is needed to ensure that scientific phenomenology lives up to its promise as a research methodology.

  • Considering significant words that stand for the history of Paleolithic in North Korea, these can be summarized for each decade since the 1960s. The 1960s ought to be when the earliest discovery of a Paleolithic site was made by Korean hands. The 1970s might be the earliest period for textbooks being published that were geared towards increasing general understanding of the Paleolithic era in the Korean peninsula. The 1980s can be summarized as a period of reissued Paleolithic articles from a newly introduced archaeological journal. The 1990s witnessed efforts to formulate nationalistic interpretations about the Paleolithic period in Korea. The 2000s then synthesized several of these aspects of Paleolithic studies. Gulpori, the Paleolithic site that was discovered in the 1960s, holds significance not just because of the discovery itself, but because of its prompt acceptance by North Korean academic authorities. The publications that covered general understanding of Paleolithic archaeology such as Joseon Gogohag Gaeyo, Joseon-ui Guseoggisidae, and Joseonjeonsa: Wonsipyeon in the 1970s hold immense significance themselves, as they demonstrate contemporary achievements. Reintroduction of the archaeological Journal, Joseongogoyeongu in 1986, is the beacon of alleviation of conspicuous effect to the academic sector. During the 1990s, a new emphasis on nationalism influenced Paleolithic studies. In the 2000s, the formally constructed elements of Paleolithic research such as Paleolithic chronology, social evolution, lithic assemblage, Quaternary studies, and human evolution were consistently refined. Metaphorically speaking, these parts are like a polygonal structure. As is the case with a polygonal structure, these research aspects are united and work together. Each part affects the others. Although the content of each research aspect has been altered by either academic growth or sociopolitical agenda, the fundamental part of the polygonal structure is not likely to be changed. The structure is solid enough to continue to serve the purposes of North Korean Paleolithic studies. North Korean Paleolithic archaeology seems to be a juxtaposition; some parts are easily changed while others are not. In order to ascertain these, not only the academic but also the sociopolitical context should be followed.

  • American ginseng plants (Panax quinquefolium L.) of various ages were harvested every two weeks during each of three growing seasons and dry matter yield of components and root respiration determined. Shoot dry weight was about 0.5 g, 2.5 g and 4 g for 2, 3 and 4-year-old plants, respectively and fruit dry weight was as much as 50% of this in 3- and 4-year-.old plants. Root dry weight decrease by 30~50% as shoots emerged and at the end of the season was about 2 g, 3.5 g and 5 g in 2, 3, 4 and 5-year-old plants, respectively. Shoot and root dry weight were linearly related with an approximate 1:2 ratio. Root respiration rate at 2$0^{\circ}C$ in the dark was about 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ CO2 g-1 DW(dry weight) min-1 in the early season, then doubled within 50 days as shoots emerged, and thereafter declined over the season to 2~5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ CO2 g-1 DW min-1. The Q10 for dark respiration over the interval from 10 to 2$0^{\circ}C$ was 1.58. Root respiration rate and shoot growth rate was positively linearly related in all ages of plants. Key words: Dry weight, partitioning.

  • This paper introduces a GPS-aided dead reckoning algorithm that asymptotically estimates the heading bias error of a magnetic compass based on geodetic north, improves the position error accumulated by dead reckoning, and helps the estimated position of an AUV to represent a position in the NED coordinate system, by receiving GPS position information when surfaced. Based on the results of a simulation, the locational error was bounded with a modest distance, after estimating the AUV position and heading bias error of the magnetic compass when surfaced. In other words, it was verified that proposed algorithm improves the position error in the NED coordinate system.

  • This study examined the Japanese and Chinese journalist's views on anti-Korean wave, who are the public and authoritative discourse producers in Japan and China, respectively. In so doing, the study aims to understand the ways in which the phenomena of anti-Korean wave take place and are diffused. According to the findings, anti-Korean wave in north-east Asia is affected by anti-Korea sentiments that have been induced from historical and political relations as well as cultural conflicts. In specific, the anti-Korea sentiments found in both Japan and China are geopolitical particularity and historical relations function to frame their cultural receptions of Korean pop culture. In other words, the phenomena of anti-Korean wave in both countries do not stem directly from local audiences' either discontents or apathy on Korean pop contents. However, while Japanese anti-Korean wave seems to be mere expressions of anti-Korea sentiments, Chinese sentiments of anti-Korean wave are triggered and transferred by, or articulated with their anti-Korea sentiments.

  • In this paper, we propose the technique of optimal search keyword extraction and retrieval for news article classification. The proposed technique was verified as an example of identifying trends related to North Korean construction. A representative Korean media platform, BigKinds, was used to select sample articles and extract keywords. The extracted keywords were vectorized using word embedding and based on this, the similarity between the extracted keywords was examined through cosine similarity. In addition, words with a similarity of 0.5 or higher were clustered based on the top 10 frequencies. Each cluster was formed as 'OR' between keywords inside the cluster and 'AND' between clusters according to the search form of the BigKinds. As a result of the in-depth analysis, it was confirmed that meaningful articles appropriate for the original purpose were extracted. This paper is significant in that it is possible to classify news articles suitable for the user's specific purpose without modifying the existing classification system and search form.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the kinds of plays and the meanings of words in play songs among children of Han heritage. A total of three data sets were used. Data for two of the data sets were obtained from only South Korean children in 1990 and 2005, respectively, while the other data set contained responses from South Korean, Chinese Korean, and North Korean children collected in 1999. The three societies of Han heritage differed in the level of economic and industrial development and ideological orientation, and each society tended to socialize and educate their children in different ways. The kind of plays and the lyrics of the play songs were different in each stage by the level of economic and industrial development, and ideological orientation. In each society, a dominant play changed periodically. For instance, physical play decreased while television, video, and internet game plays increased. The increase in internet game play was related to the level of industrial development. Although three groups shared some common play songs prior to 1945, they have developed their own play songs after 1945 according to their respective social ideological characteristics. Notwithstanding these differences in play songs, common themes, materials, rhythms, and the Korean emotionality exist across all groups.

  • The estuary in Nakdong River has changes by the construction of harbors, land reclamation and artificial waterway changes. These resultslead to changes of extinction and creation of deltaic barrier island. The deltaic barrier island changes in the Nakdong River estuary affect the function of the barrier islands and cause environmental changes. Therefore, it is important to monitor the changes in the area of the Nakdong estuary. In this study, long-term changes of the area and suspended sediment of deltaic barrier island in the Nakdong River estuary were analyzed using Landsat TM/ETM+ images. As a result, end point rate (EPR) values of shoreline in Jinwoodo and Sinjado are about 5m/yr and about 50 m/yr, respectively. The EPR values of north-south and east-west direction in Doyodeung are 20 m/yr and -20 ~ 10 m/yr. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has a maximum value of $25g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Jinwoodo and Sinjado, while it has a maximum concentration of $40g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Shinjido and Doyodeung. In other words, the area and the SSC change are small in Jinwoodo, and the area change and the SSC variation are large in Sinjado and Doyodeung. As a result of analysis of correlation between area change and SSC variation using all data, the Pearson coefficient value (r) is 0.36 and it is 0.32 in winter data. In other words, it is considered that the SSC variation affectsthe deltatic barrier island area change. However, verification using advanced altimetry data is necessary in the future. These studies can be used for coastal monitoring and environmental monitoring.

  • Paspalum distichum and P. distichum var. indutum are perennial weeds of the family Poaceae that prefer moist environments such as waterfronts and waterways. The origin of both species is North America. P. distichum is distributed all over the world. However, P. distichum var. indutum occurs only in the United States, Japan, and Korea. For this reason, in many countries, P. distichum and P. distichum var. indutum are classified as the same species. In other words, P. distichum var. indutum is a different ecological type of P. distichum. Both species can reproduce and spread mainly by rhizome fragments rather than seeds. This rhizome has a characteristic that it does not germinate if it is buried in the ground with depth of more than 3 cm. As a management method for P. distichum and P. distichum var. indutum in agricultural lands (paddy fields), it is effective to combine cultural control and chemical control methods. In other words, combining deep plowing and harrowing can suppress the budding of water sparrow that has invaded paddy fields or fallow paddy fields. After that, these two species that germinate can be controlled by spraying soil treatment herbicides such as butachlor and thiobencarb or foliar treatment herbicides such as cyhalofop-butyl and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl.
