In this paper, we analyze the effect of the representative spectral indices, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI) and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) on classification accuracies of Landsat-8 OLI image. After creating these spectral index images, we propose five methods to select the spectral index images as classification features together with Landsat-8 OLI bands from 1 to 7. From the experiments we observed that when the spectral index image of NDVI or NDWI is used as one of the classification features together with the Landsat-8 OLI bands from 1 to 7, we can obtain higher overall accuracy and kappa coefficient than the method using only Landsat-8 OLI 7 bands. In contrast, the classification method, which selected only NDBI as classification feature together with Landsat-8 OLI 7 bands did not show the improvement in classification accuracies.

Detection of surface water features including river, wetland, reservoir from the satellite imagery can be utilized for sustainable management and survey of water resources. This research compared the water indices derived from the multispectral bands and the machine learning technique for detecting the surface water features from he Landsat-8 satellite image acquired in Daegu through the following steps. First, the NDWI(Normalized Difference Water Index) image and the MNDWI(Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) image were separately generated using the multispectral bands of the given Landsat-8 satellite image, and the two binary images were generated from these NDWI and MNDWI images, respectively. Then SVM(Support Vector Machine), the widely used machine learning techniques, were employed to generate the land cover image and the binary image was also generated from the generated land cover image. Finally the error matrices were used for measuring the accuracy of the three binary images for detecting the surface water features. The statistical results showed that the binary image generated from the MNDWI image(84%) had the relatively low accuracy than the binary image generated from the NDWI image(94%) and generated by SVM(96%). And some misclassification errors occurred in all three binary images where the land features were misclassified as the surface water features because of the shadow effects.
With the increasing severity of climate change, intense torrential rains are occurring more frequently globally. Flooding due to torrential rain not only causes substantial damage directly, but also via secondary events such as landslides. Therefore, accurate and prompt flood detection is required. Because it is difficult to directly access flooded areas, previous studies have largely used satellite images. Traditionally, water indices such asthe normalized difference water index (NDWI) and modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) which are based on different optical bands acquired by satellites, are used to detect floods. In addition, as flooding likelihood is greatly influenced by the weather, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have also been used, because these are less influenced by weather conditions. In this study, we compared flood areas calculated from SAR images and water indices derived from Landsat-8 images, where the images were acquired at similar times. The flooded area was calculated from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 images taken between the end of May and August 2019 at Lijiazhou Island, China, which is located in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River basin and experiences annual floods. As a result, the flooded area calculated using the MNDWI was approximately 21% larger on average than that calculated using the NDWI. In a comparison of flood areas calculated using water indices and SAR intensity images, the flood areas calculated using SAR images tended to be smaller, regardless of the order in which the images were acquired. Because the images were acquired by the two satellites on different dates, we could not directly compare the accuracy of the water-index and SAR data. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates that floods can be detected using both optical and SAR satellite data.

Remote sensing is an efficient technology for observing and monitoring the land surfaces inaccessible to humans. This research proposes a methodology for improving the accuracy of the land cover classification using the Landsat-8 operational land imager(OLI) image. The proposed methodology consists of the following steps. First, the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) and normalized difference water index(NDWI) images are generated from the given Landsat-8 OLI image. Then, a new image is generated by adding both NDVI and NDWI images to the original Landsat-8 OLI image using the layer-stacking method. Finally, the maximum likelihood classification(MLC), and support vector machine(SVM) methods are separately applied to the original Landsat-8 OLI image and new image to identify the five classes namely water, forest, cropland, bare soil, and artificial structure. The comparison of the results shows that the utilization of the layer-stacking method improves the accuracy of the land cover classification by 8% for the MLC method and by 1.6% for the SVM method. This research proposes a methodology for improving the accuracy of the land cover classification by using the layer-stacking method.

Identifying waterbody from remote sensing images, namely water detection, helps understand continuous redistribution of terrestrial water storage and accompanying hydrological processes. It also allows us to estimate available surface water resources and help effective water management. For this problem, NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) and MNDWI (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) are widely used. Although remote sensing indexes can highlight remote sensing image in the water, the noise and the spatial information of the remote sensing image are difficult to be considered, so the accuracy is difficult to be compared with the visual interpretation (the most accurate method, but it requires a lot of labor, which makes it difficult to apply). In this study, we attempt to improve existing NDWI and MNDWI to better water detection. We establish waterbody database of South Korea first and then used it for assessing waterbody indices.
This research is primarily intended to explore a novel way to monitor desiccation of inland wetland by combining MNDWI (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The changes for vegetation and water condition on Upo Wetland located at southeastern Korea were investigated by MNDWI and NDVI derived from 2002, 2010 and 2015 Landsat data. The integrated use of MNDWI and NDVI made it possible to identify area-wide vegetation cover changes and to assess water storage changes on multi-annual time scales simultaneously. Comparing MNDWI with NDVI reveals the quantitative evidences for anthropogenic and environmental influences (such as road, building, water) causing an accelerated wetland desiccation. In fact, our monitoring approach raises critical issues regarding the hydrological cycle and its inter-annual changes for inland wetland under threat of drying up and highlights the important role of MNDWI and NDVI integration for any urgent or long-term treatment plan. This research presents scientific and objective evidences to support integrated approach of NDVI and MNDWI in exploring drying up trends of wetlands.
Recently, forest fires have frequently occurred due to climate change, leading to human and property damage every year. The forest fire monitoring technique using remote sensing can obtain quick and large-scale information of fire-damaged areas. In this study, the Gangneung and Donghae forest fires that occurred in March 2022 were analyzed using the spectral band of Sentinel-2, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the normalized difference water index (NDWI) to classify the affected areas of forest fires. The U-net based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) model was simulated for the fire-damaged areas. The accuracy of forest fire classification in Donghae and Gangneung classification was high at 97.3% (f1=0.486, IoU=0.946). The same model used in Donghae and Gangneung was applied to Uljin and Samcheok areas to get rid of the possibility of overfitting often happen in machine learning. As a result, the portion of overlap with the forest fire damage area reported by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS) was 74.4%, confirming a high level of accuracy even considering the uncertainty of the model. This study suggests that it is possible to quantitatively evaluate the classification of forest fire-damaged area using a spectral band and indices similar to that of the Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500-4) in the Sentinel-2.

The reservoir area is defined as the area surrounded by the planned flood level of the dam or the land under the planned flood level of the dam. In this study, supervised classification based on RF (Random Forest), which is a representative machine learning technique, was performed to detect cropland in the reservoir area. In order to classify the cropland in the reservoir area efficiently, the GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix), which is a representative technique to quantify texture information, NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) were utilized as additional features during classification process. In particular, we analyzed the effect of texture information according to window size for generating GLCM, and suggested a methodology for detecting croplands in the reservoir area. In the experimental result, the classification result showed that cropland in the reservoir area could be detected by the multispectral, NDVI, NDWI and GLCM images of UAV, efficiently. Especially, the window size of GLCM was an important parameter to increase the classification accuracy.
Water body extraction is significant for flood disaster monitoring using satellite imagery. Conventional methods have focused on finding an index, which highlights water body and suppresses non-water body such as vegetation or soil area. The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) is typically used to extract water body from satellite images. The drawback of NDWI, however, is that some man-made objects in built-up areas have NDWI values similar to water body. The objective of this paper is to propose a new method that could extract correctly water body with built-up areas in before and after images of flood. We first create a two-element feature vector consisting of NDWI and a Near InfRared band (NIR) and then select a training site on water body area. After computing the mean vector and the covariance matrix of the training site, we classify each pixel into water body based on Mahalanobis distance. We also register before and after images of flood using outlier removal and triangulation-based local transformation. We finally create a change map by combining the before-flooding water body and after-flooding water body. The experimental results show that the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the proposed method were 97.25% and 94.14%, respectively, while those of the NDWI method were 89.5% and 69.6%, respectively.

Turbidity, the measure of the cloudiness of water, is used as an important index for water quality management. The turbidity can vary greatly in small river systems, which affects water quality in national rivers. Therefore, the generation of high-resolution spatial information on turbidity is very important. In this study, a turbidity retrieval model using the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 and -3A (KOMPSAT-3/3A) images was developed for high-resolution turbidity mapping of Han River system based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. To this end, the top of atmosphere (TOA) spectral reflectance was calculated from a total of 24 KOMPSAT-3/3A images and 150 Landsat-8 images. The Landsat-8 TOA spectral reflectance was cross-calibrated to the KOMPSAT-3/3A bands. The turbidity measured by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network was used as a reference dataset, and as input variables, the TOA spectral reflectance at the locations of in situ turbidity measurement, the spectral indices (the normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, and normalized difference turbidity index), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived atmospheric products(the atmospheric optical thickness, water vapor, and ozone) were used. Furthermore, by analyzing the KOMPSAT-3/3A TOA spectral reflectance of different turbidities, a new spectral index, new normalized difference turbidity index (nNDTI), was proposed, and it was added as an input variable to the turbidity retrieval model. The XGBoost model showed excellent performance for the retrieval of turbidity with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.70 NTU and a normalized RMSE (NRMSE) of 14.70% compared to in situ turbidity, in which the nNDTI proposed in this study was used as the most important variable. The developed turbidity retrieval model was applied to the KOMPSAT-3/3A images to map high-resolution river turbidity, and it was possible to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of turbidity. Through this study, we could confirm that the KOMPSAT-3/3A images are very useful for retrieving high-resolution and accurate spatial information on the river turbidity.
