  • The symptoms that have same pathologic pattern written in the chapter of Soyangin's general pathology of the book 'Dongyi Soose Bowon' can give us a key to the Dr.Lee Je-Ma's point of view about the constitutional pathophysiology. As the result, Dr. Lee called the person who has yang-hyperactivity/yin-hypoactivity as So-Yang-In. And the Soyangin has two basic pathologic pathway ; excess of Yang-hyperactivity/excess of Yin-hypoactivity. Each pathologic pathway has variatons though, the pathologic pattern results in above two type. Excess Yin-hypoactivity has three variations of pathologic pattern. 1. smaller excess of Yin-hypoactivity with the normal range of Yang-hyperactivity 2. larger excess Yin-hypoactivity with the excitation of Yang-hyperactivity by the extrinsic factor 3. smaller excess Yin-hypoactivity with the loss of Yang-hyperactivity. And excess Yang-hyperactivity also has three variations. In my point of view, CVA, Hematemesis, Vommiting, Abdominal Pain, Gastric Dyscomfort has No.3 type and Asthmatic condition, Dysentery, Edema has No.1 type.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a software program for nutritional counseling by assessment of nutrients intake status and health degree by using semi-quantitative frequency food intake method and the questionnaire of Cornell Medical Index(CMI) and farmers' syndrome. This program is composed with three parts, nutrients intake, health status with body complaints, and nutrition counseling contents for diet therapy of each body condition states. First, nutrient intakes with percentage of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances, and quantities of other nutrients intake were calculated and presented in an out-put screen. Second, the different body complaints(farmers' syndrome, anemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal problem, and cardiovascular complaints) were divided 3 groups of health status as normal. suspected and ailment. The contents of nutritional counseling with recommended food kinds. intake quantities. and recommended preparation methods were shown by button click of each health state of body complaints. And also this program could serve several times for one person to compare nutrition education and counseling effect by use of pre and post presentation results. This programs would be effect to home extension workers of rural development administration for farmers' nutrition counseling.

  • Human-hand gestures have been used a means of communication among people for a long time, being interpreted as streams of tokens for a language. The signed language is a method of communication for hearing impaired person. Articulated gestures and postures of hands and fingers are commonly used for the signed language. This paper presents a system which recognizes the korean sign language (KSL) and translates the recognition results into a normal korean text and sound. A pair of data-gloves are used a sthe sensing device for detecting motions of hands and fingers. In this paper, we propose a dynamic gesture recognition mehtod by employing a fuzzy feature analysis method for efficient classification of hand motions, and applying a fuzzy min-max neural network to on-line pattern recognition.

  • Objectives Some major Chinese medical classics like Huangdineijing (黃帝內經) and Nanjing (難經) assert that a normal person breaths 13,500 times every day. It's just half of real breathing cycles of human. So I tried to find a reasonable explanation to solve this conflict between truth and literal description. Materials and methods To find breath count descriptions in Chinese ancient books, I used Kanseki Repository (http://kanripo.org/). To find precedent research on this topic, I used China National Knowledge Infrastructure (http://cnki.net). Results 33 books refers to human breath cycles for a day, and most of them introduce 13,500 as human breathing frequency of one day. Some recent papers on Laoguanshan (老官山) Western Han dynasty manuscripts show new clues on this topic. Conclusion I assume that 13,500 cycles, the incorrect human breathing frequency of a day, might be originated from adjusting the meaning and usage of the word "Xi (息)".

  • Reconstruction of the pharyngoesophagus is one of the most difficult challenges in head and neck surgery. The goals of pharyngoesophageal reconstruction include restoration of a person's ability to swallow and to speak with minimal morbidity, but no current reconstruction modality is clearly best. Following its first introduction as fasciocutaneous flap by Yang in 1981, the forearm flap based on radial artery has become recognized as a very reliable and relatively easy one to use. The forearm flap has thin, pliable and predominantly hairless skin and scant subcutaneous layer In addition, its vascular pedicle is long and of large caliber, which greatly increases the chance of successful revascularization. The forearm flap shows the potentiality for better functional rehabilitation in swallowing and speech as well as the possibility of three dimensional reconstruction. We experienced a case of radial forearm free flap for the reconstruction in a patient with the hypopharyngeal stricture. The early return of oral feeding was possible and successfully enough to return to the normal daily activity.

  • Translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) activates basophils to release histamine and causes chronic inflammation. It was also reported that TCTP significantly reduced in brain of Alzheimer's Disease and Down Syndrome as compared to normal person, suggesting that TCTP might be involved in cognitive function. We wondered whether TCTP could act as a general inducer in neurotransmitters release in brain. We, therefore, investigated the role of TCTP in PC12 cell line which expressed neuronal properties. We found that TCTP could activate JNK, and the activity was inhibited by pretreatment of dicoumarol, a JNK inhibitor. However, TCTP could not activate ERK that has known to be involved in neurotransmitter release. These suggest TCTP did not participate in neurotransmitter release from PC12 cells, and TCTP might not be a general inducer in neurotransmitter release.

  • Osteoporosis, one of the age-related disease causes vertebra body fracture due to weakening trabecular bone and makes a substantial effect on load sharing among vertebras. Recently, vertebroplasty is one of the most popular treatment, as augmenting PMMA into vertebra. Biomechanical studies about vertebroplasty have been evaluated by several experiments or analysis under static loading but there has been no study on response under dynamic loading. This study included the FE analysis of patients who treated vertebroplasty under dynamic loading. For this study, 3-D FE model of lumbar spine(L1-L2) was modeled from CT scanning data and compared with experimental results in vitro in order to validate this model. Biomechanical behavior about each of normal person, osteoporotic patient and patient treated vertebroplasty for quantitative evaluations of vertebroplasty was compared and investigated.

  • In this paper, we devised a pulse rate detection system to provide basic clinical index of cold-hot diagnosis of oriental medicine. The system consists of pulse signal detection, respiration signal detection, electrocardiograph detection, A/D conversion and computer system parts. We define a pulse rate by a pulse count to the respiration period inspiration pulse rate by a pulse count to the inspiration period, and expiration pulse rate by a pulse count to the expiration period. The clinical experiments for normal Person to evaluate the pulse rate detection system show the pulse/respiration ratio of 4.30${\pm}$1.03, the pulse/inspiration ratio of 1.60${\pm}$0.32, the pulse/expiration ratio of 2.37${\pm}$0.75.
