In this research, the levels of concentrations from the junction of effluent from wastewater treatment plant during dry days and combined with runoff from the surrounding 11 ha livestock catchment area during wet days were determined to investigate the relationships of the concentration of various pollutants such as particulates, nutrients and organics originating from point and nonpoint sources. Manual sampling was conducted from October 2008 to December 2011 during dry and wet days. Based on the results, the flow rates and concentrations of most pollutant parameters were increased during wet days. It was found out that the effluent wastewater combined with stormwater runoff has low BOD to TN/TP ratio and high TN/TP to BOD ratio. Therefore, it is needed to employ other treatment methods to effectively manage the wastewater and reduce the pollutant discharge to receiving water bodies.
During the dry periods, many types of pollutant are accumulating on the paved surface by vehicle activities. Particularly, the highways are stormwater intensive landuses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from vehicles. The accumulated pollutants in highways are washed-off during a rainfall event and are highly contributing on water quality of receiving water bodies. The stormwater runoff from the highways are containing various pollutants such as metals, oil & grease and toxic chemicals originated from vehicles. Therefore, this research is performed to find pollutant characteristics in the magnitude of statistical pollutant concentrations during storm periods. During the monitoring periods, the first-flush phenomenon is visibly occurred on most storm events, which is confirmed from hydro- and pollute-graphs. The 95% confidence intervals of washed-off pollutant concentration are ranged to 154.7-257.1 mg/L for 755,138.9-197.6 mg/L for COD, 3.5-6.4 mg/L for oil & grease, 6.3-9.2 mg/L for TN and 2.3-3.31 mg/L for TP. The first flush effect is mostly occurred within initial 30 min of storm duration.
The most obvious and easily recognizable sources of potential water pollution are point sources such as domestic and industrial wastes. But recently, the potential effects of nonpoint sources on water quality have been increased apparently. In order to evaluate the characteristics and the effects of nonpoint sources on water quality, this study was performed in Suyeong Bay from May, 1992 to July, 1992. The depth-averaged 2-dimensional numerical model, which consists of the hydrodynamic model and the diffusion model was applied to simulate the water quality in Suyeong Bay. When flowrate was $65.736m^3/s,$ the concentration of pollutants (COD, TSS and VSS) at Oncheon stream (Sebeong bridge) during second flush were very high as much as 121.4mg/l of COD, 1148.0mg/l of TSS and 262.0mg/1 of VSS. When flowrate was 4.686m^3/s, the concentration of pollutants $(TIN,\;NH_4\;^+-\;N,\;NO_2\;^--N\;and\;PO_4\;^{3-}-P)$ during the first flush were very high as much as 20.306mg/1 of TIN, 14.154mg/1 of $NH_4\;^+-N$, 9.571mg/l of $NO_2\;^--N$ and l.785mg/l of $PO_2\;^{3-}-P$ As results of the hydrodynamic model simulation, the computed maximum velocity of tidal currents in Suyeong Bay was 0.3m/s and their direction was clockwise flow for ebb tide and counter clockwise flow for Hood tide. Four different methods were applied for the diffusion simulation in Suyeong Bay. There were the effects for the water quality due to point loads, annual nonpoint loads and nonpoint loads during the wet weather and the investigation period, respectively. The efforts of annual nonpoint loads and nonpoint loads during the wet weather seem to be slightly deteriorated in comparison with the effects of point loads. However, the bay was significantly polluted by the nonpoint loads during the investigation period. In this case, COD and SS concentrations ranged 2.0-30.0mg/l, 7.0- 200.0mg/l in ebb tide, respectively. From these results, it can be emphasized that the large amount of pollutants caused by nonpoint sources during the wet weather were discharged into the bay, and affected significantly to both the water quality and the marine ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the loadings of nonpoint pollutants to plan wastewater treatment plant.

Runoff simulation tests to investigate the flow mechanics of nonsuomerged overland flow in a natural grass intervening land system were condueted and a modified kinematic wave overland runoff model developed by Choi et al. (1993) was verified. Nonhomogeneity and heterogeneity of the soil, slope, local topography, infiltration, grass density, and the density and activity of the soil microhes and wild animals were the major factors affecting the flow. Streamlines were disturbed by grass stems and small concentrated flows due to the disturbed streamlines and local topography were observed a lot. Relatively larger concentrated flows were observed where bundles of grass were dominant than where individual grasses were growing. Predicted hydrographs were agreed verv well with measured hydrographs. Since the modified model considers grass density in computing flow depth and hydraulic radius, it can be better than existing kinematic wave model if it were used to route nonpoint source pollutant attenuation processes in many grass intervening land systems.
This study was conducted to evaluate water treatment characteristics according to vegetated wetland(V) and open water(O) arrangements in free water surface constructed wetland. Three pilot-scale wetlands, V-V, O-V and V-O, were built and operated. $BOD_5$ was a slightly reduced at all the arrangements because the influent concentration was so low as background concentration of constructed wetlands. While T-N and T-P removal efficiency showed higher than 50% for all cases. The O-V arrangement showed the highest removal efficiency: 20% for $BOD_5$, 56% for SS, 59% for T-N and 72% for T-P. Effluent concentration of the O-V were significantly low compared with those from the V-O. O-V arrangement would be beneficial in the light of pollutant removal efficiency as well as construction cost.

This study was conducted to investigate characteristics of nonpoint pollutant discharges and concentrations in runoff from the urban and agricultural areas in Korea. The analytical parameters used for this study were COD, BOD and SS. This study was conducted during the period from May to August 1981. Nonpoint pollutant mass loadings from the urban area were influenced by the rainfall intensity and the duration of rainfall, and etc. The concentrations of pollutants in the first flush was higher as the discharges increased. It was, however, found that the concentrations of pollutants in the heavy storm runoff were decreased due to the dilution effect. When other rainfall followed a peak rainfall, the concentrations of pollutants were lower than expected, because the first flush conveyed the most of pollutants deposited on the combined sewers. However the concentrations were increased in proportion to the increased flow when a rainfall of higher intensity than the first flush was continued. Yearly area yield rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 690.5(489.9~1,328) of COD, 319.7(226.8~614.8) of BOD, and 831.2(589.7~1,598) of SS. Pollutant sources in agricultural area were of the domestic waste water, manure composting stack, and agricultural solid wastes and etc. In the paddy field, yearly area yield rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 623.4(21.7~114) of COD, 18.65(9.53~34.5) of BOD, and 91.9(46.3~171.8) of SS. In the crop land, however, yearly rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 91.9(46.3~171.8) of COD, 23.09(11.7~42.5) of BOD, and 23.09(11.4~43.4) of SS. Pollutant sources in the feedlot area were originating from the feces of cattle, the cleaning water, the wastes spilled from manure composting stack during rain. Yearly area yield rate in kg/ha was estimated to be 3.804(2,489~6,658) of COD, 2.047(464~2,900) of BOD, and 1.149 (729~1,442) of SS. Pollutant discharges in the forest area were resulted from the organic layer like leaves and others deposited on the surface. Yearly area yield rate in kg/ha was estimated to be 9.86(5.45~18.56) of COD, 3.48(1.67~7.54) of BOD, and 4.64(9.74~10.35) of SS.

The pollutant removal efficiencies of stormwater runoff by settling were analyzed using field samples collected in 4 different raining events in a test bed installed in the Gwanpyung-Cheon stream in Daejeon. A 1.8 m high with 30 cm diameter cylindrical settling device was used for the settling test by measuring concentration of TSS, TP and TN for time and height. The pollutants removal rate was relatively high in the first 4 hours while 24 hours seem to be necessary to reach steady state in pollutant concentrations. However, there were no considerable differences in concentrations for height at a given time. This indicates most of particulate pollutant in the test seems to show independent settling with no interference to each other. Much part of particle sizes were distributed in the range of $10{\sim}100{\mu}m$. Average particulate fractions of TP and TN were estimated as 52.4% and 23.5%, respectively. This results explain why TN is difficult to remove by simple settling. This study indicates that a simple settling can provide effective method to remove significant amount of TSS and TP effectively and this can be used to protect urban river water quality.
Low impact development (LID) facilities are established for the purpose of restoring the natural hydrologic cycle as well as the removal of pollutants from stormwater runoff. Improved efficiency of LID facilities can be obtained through the optimized interaction of their major components (i.e., plant, soil, filter media, microorganisms, etc.). Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the performances of LID facilities in terms of runoff and pollutant reduction and also to provide an optimal maintenance method. The monitoring was conducted on four LID technologies (e.g., bioretention, small wetlands, rain garden and tree box filter). The optimal SA/CA (facility surface area / catchment area) ratio for runoff reduction greater than 40% is determined to be 1 - 5%. Since runoff reduction affects the pollutant removal efficiency in LID facilities, SA/CA ratio is derived as an important factor in designing LID facilities. The LID facilities that are found to be effective in reducing stormwater runoff are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > bioretention> small wetland. Meanwhile, in terms of removal of particulate matter (TSS), the effectiveness of the facilities are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > small wetland > bioretention; rain gardens > tree box filter > bioretention > small wetland were determined for the removal of organic matter (COD, TOC), nutrients (TN, TP) and heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn). These results can be used as an important material for the design of LID facilities in runoff volume and pollutant reduction.

In this study, fecal nonpoint pollutant sources tracking were conducted on Ansan stream. Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Analysis (MARA) method used in this study is based on the premise that fecal bacteria derived from intestine of human or animal has each different resistance for antibiotics. First of all, a database for known sources should be established to use the method and then, an unknown sample was applied on the database to find unknown sources by statistical analysis. The Ansan stream was considered with divided condition into three parts: upper (livestock farming area), mid (old section of the city), and downstream (new section of the city) to search an environmental influence of the stream basin. As results of the statistical analysis, it could be estimated that the upper stream area was influenced by animals due to the nature of influence for the livestock farms located in this area because livestock were classified as percentages of 45.8% in 3-way method divided into livestock, pet and human. In case of midstream and downstream, the human influence was remarkable as percentage of 60% and 80%, respectively. From these results, it could be judged that the MARA method is useful in source tracking the non-point pollutant sources because the MARA results correspond to which predictable non-point pollutant sources by a field study. Also, it is expected that a more effective source tracking will be possible as establishing database of each area.
There are many pilot programs and projects to implement the water quality trading (WQT) policy. But actual trading is relatively rare. The main reason of the scarce applications of WQT policy is the difficulty in determining the equalities between the trading sites. The uncertainty of the impacts of the nonpoint sources pollutant discharges between up and downstream urban development areas also makes the implementation of the policy harder. The simulated results from the watershed modeling program will be used to calculate the point and nonpoint sources pollutants of the future urban development scenarios. The amount of suspended sediments resulting from the urban developments and rainfall intensities will be used to indicate the environmental impacts of the water body between upstream and downstream. The water quality impacts after development scenarios to the outlet of the watershed were transferred to the trading units between two sites. The recommended trading units can be used as a decision support system for policy makers and stakeholders to carry out better WQT practices.
