  • Recently the water quality management policy gives priority to management the point source. Point pollution sources have definite emission points and are discharged to one point through a pipe. But Nonpoint pollution source (NPS) has uncertain pathway, pollutant load and runoff characteristics unlike point pollution sources, making them difficult to manage. Thus, the Korea government plans to develop and equip facilities that help reduce NPS so as to manage them more easily. But removal efficiency of Best Management Practice (BMPs) is in influenced by rainfall, hydrologic condition like natural phenomenon, so factors of removal efficiency are difficult. Thus there is a need for multilateral research about many factors that affect removal efficiency for removal facility design of proper non-point pollution. In this research, mapping, vegetation coverage and retention time were investigated in the case of factors that affect removal efficiency in grassed swale, a nature-type non-point removal facility. Grassed swale obtained changed of coverage using Braun-Blanquet within swale and retention time was obtained from point that rainfall effluent enters into swale to the time that first outflow starts. Besides, correlation analysis was obtained using pearson correlation analysis method. As a result, it was shown that removal efficiency increases as retention time is longer in grassed swale and that retention time increases as vegetation coverage is higher.

  • The Non-Point Sources shows different characteristics over a wide area depending on basin situation and rainfall events etc. In addition, Among various land uses in the urban areas, runoff appears high in the paved area, though small in its size, during a heavy rain than in other land use owing to its high impervious rate, and pollutants become severly accumulated owing to continual transportation of vehicles, characteristically showing high concentrations of runoff in the early stage. As a result, several advanced countries including USA give a special emphasis on the paved area as a target for supervision. In view of these aspects, the research is not only required to consider separated sub-basins which are distributed according to land uses, but also needed to develop a suitable monitoring which is reflected rainfall-runoff relation. The on-site monitoring has been performed to collect data in object watershed as well.

  • Distributed models represent watersheds using a network of numerous, uniform calculation units to provide spatially detailed and consistent evaluations across the watershed. However, these models have a disadvantage in general requiring a high computing cost. Semi-distributed models, on the other hand, delineate watersheds using a simplified network of non-uniform calculation units requiring a much lower computing cost than distributed models. Employing a simplified network of non-uniform units, however, semi-distributed models cannot but have limitations in spatially-consistent simulations of hydrogeochemical processes and are often not favoured for such a task as identifying critical source areas within a watershed. Aiming to overcome these shortcomings of both groups of models, a hybrid watershed model STREAM (Spatio-Temporal River-basin Ecohydrology Analysis Model) was developed in this study. Like a distributed model, STREAM divides a watershed into square grid cells of a same size each of which may have a different set of hydrogeochemical parameters reflecting the spatial heterogeneity. Like many semi-distributed models, STREAM groups individual cells of similar hydrogeochemical properties into representative cells for which real computations of the model are carried out. With this hybrid structure, STREAM requires a relatively small computational cost although it still keeps the critical advantage of distributed models.

  • Natural environment of the Wolgokri stream watershed, located in Chuncheon, Gangwon province, Korea, has been well preserved as a traditional agricultural watershed. To analyze characteristics of NPS pollution generated from an mountainous agricultural watershed, the flow and water qualities of the study watershed were monitored and were analyzed to estimate pollution loads. Annual runoff volume ratio was $70.4\%$. Concentrations of T-N, T-p, COD, and TOC were higher when monthly rainfall was between $0\~30mm$ than those when monthly rainfall was between $30\~70mm$. However, the concentrations varied considerably when monthly rainfall was higher than 100mm. The flow weighted mean concentrations(mg/L) of BOD, COD, TOC, $NO_3-N$, T-N, T-P and SS were 1.96, 2.72, 3.32, 1.41, 4.70, 0.187 and 13.36, respectively. The BOD, SS, T-N and T-P loads of July, 2004 were $48\%,\;17\%,\;51\%\;and\;32\%$ of annual load, respectively. The BOD, COD, TOC, $NO_3-N$, T-N, T-p, and SS loads (kg/ha) from Mar. 2004 to Apr. 2005 were 19.09, 26.55, 32.39, 13.85, 45.92, 1.887 and 130.18, respectively. The highest concentrations of BOD, NO3-N, T-N, T-p, SS, COD and TOC were found before the flow reached the peak runoff, possibly due to the first flushing effect. Generally, pollution loads of the Wolgokri watershed were not that significant. Phosphorus load, however, was higher enough to cause eutrophication in the receiving water body It was recommended that best management practices need to be implemented to reduce phosphorus sources.

  • he objective of this study is to evaluate and analyze Sincheon basin water environment system. The data were collected from 2010 August to 2016 December including BOD, SS, T-N, T-P. The results were as followed. As the result of comparing the amount of BOD generated by pollution sources in the Sincheon water system, industrial was the highest at 33,259.4 kg/day. In comparison with the tributary, it was estimated that Dong-Du water system reveals the highest level of BOD in the industry. Population and livestock was high in CheongDam and Sang-Pae water system. With the inflow stream of Hyo-Chon, Suk-Woo and Sang-Pae, the pollution degree of BOD and T-N level of Sincheon increased and pollution degree of tributary was higher than that of Sincheon's main stream. The main reason of pollutant of Suk-Woo was from untreated wastewater, and it influenced downstream of Suk-Woo. Hyo-Chon stream satisfy the water quality standard, but Zn was designated as a Monitoring contaminants, was high as 14.670 mg/L (standard 0.02~2.45mg/L)because of textile wastewater. And Sang-Pae stream was polluted by livestock wastewater of livestock farms as a nonpoint source.

  • Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution continues to degrade the water quality. NPS pollutants signals high concerns against a sustainable environment. Low impact development (LID) is the leading management practice which regulates and treats stormwater runoff especially in highly impervious urban areas. Constructed wetlands are known to have efficient removal capability of NPS pollutants. Likewise, these LID facilities were intended to maintain the predeveloped hydrologic regime through series of mechanisms such as particle settling, filtration, plant uptake, and etc. In this study, the objective was to investigate the characteristics, fate and treatment performance of the two in-campus constructed wetlands (SW1 and SW2) which were installed adjacent to impervious roads and parking lots to treat stormwater runoff. A total of 42 storm events were monitored starting from July 2010 until November 2015. Manual grab sampling was utilized at the inlet and outlet units of each LID facilities. Based on the results, the wetlands were found to be effective in reducing 37% and 41% of the total runoff volume and peak flows, respectively. Aside from this, outflow EMCs were generally lower than the inflow EMCs in most events suggesting that the two wetlands improved the water quality of stormwater runoff. The average removal efficiency of pollutants in facilities were 63~79% in TSS, 38~54% in TN, 54% in TP and 32%~81% in metals. The results of this study recommend the use of constructed wetlands as efficient treatment facility for urban areas for its satisfactory performance in runoff and pollutant reduction.

  • The field scale experiment was performed to examine the performance of the constructed wetland for nonpoint source (NPS) pollution loading reduction. Four sets (each set of 0.88 ha) of wetland (0.8 ha) and pond (0.08 ha) systems were used. Water flowing into the Seokmoon estuarine reservoir from the Dangjin stream was pumped into wetland systems. Water depth was maintained at 0.3-0.5 m and hydraulic retention time was managed to about 2-5 days; emergent plants were allowed to grow in the wetland. The wetland effluent concentrations of $BOD_5$, TSS, and T-N were higher in winter than in the growing season excepting the T-P, and effluent $BOD_5$ concentration was higher than influents in winter. Mass retention of T-N and T-P was stable throughout the year, whereas mass retention of $BOD_5$ and TSS was decreased in winter. $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N, and T-P performance of the experi-mental system was compared with the existing database (North American Treatment Wetland Database), and was within the range of general system performance. From the first-order analysis, T-P was virtually not temperature dependent, and $BOD_5$ and TSS were more temperature dependent than T-N. Overall, the wetland system was found to be an adequate alternative for treating polluted stream water with stable removal efficiency and recommended as a NPS control measures.

  • This study evaluated the ecotoxicological properties of livestock waste water treated by a LID (Low Impact Development) system, using a mixture of bio-reeds and bio-ceramics as suitable bed media for a subsequent treatment process of a livestock wastewater treatment plant. The relationship between the pollutant reduction rate and the ecotoxicity was analyzed with the effluents from the inlet pilot plant, with vegetated swale and wetlands and the batch type of an infiltration trench. Each pilot plant consisted of a bio process using bio-reeds and bio-ceramics as bed media, as well as a general process using general reeds and a bed as a control group. The results indicated that, after applying the HRT 24 hour LID method, the ecotoxicity was considerably lowered and the batch type pilot plant was shown to be effective for toxicity reduction. The LID method is expected to be effective for water quality management, considering ecotoxicity by not only as a nonpoint source pollution abatement facility but also, as a subsequent treatment process linked with a livestock manure purification facility. It is necessary to take the LID technic optimization study further to apply it as a subsequent process for livestock wastewater treatment.

  • In order to preserve water environment, Total Maximum Daily Load(TMDL) is used to manage the total amount of pollutant from various sources, and the annual average load of source is calculated by the unit load method. Determination of the unit load requires reliable data accumulation and analysis based on a reasonable estimation method. In this study, we propose a revised unit load estimation method by analyzing the unit load calculation procedure of National Institute of Environment Research(NIER) method. Both methods were tested using observed runoff ratio and water quality data of rice paddy fields. The estimated values with the respective NIER and revised NIER methods were highly correlated each other. However, the Event Mean Concentration(EMC) and the runoff ratio considered in the NIER method appeared to be influenced by rainfall classes, and the difference in unit load increases as the runoff and EMC increase. The error can be further increased when the EMC and runoff ratio are changed according to changes in rainfall patterns by climate change and change of agricultural activities. Therefore, it is recommended to calculate unit load by applying the revised NIER method reflecting the non point pollution runoff characteristics for different rainfall classes.

  • Water quality in the longitudinal and cross section was measured and analyzed at Dal stream. The change of water quality was compared with the change of discharge at the important points. When discharge was increased by rainfall, the concentration of BOD was decreased and the concentrations of TN and TP were increased. The correlation coefficient of BOD, TN, TP showed large with the water velocity and depth in the Case 2 that discharge was increased. Rainfall had much influenced in water quality because of moving the nonpoint source to the channel. Water velocity was analyzed by numerical model(Surface water Modeling System). Velocity was comparatively fast in the upstream that had a steep slope and narrow channel. The characteristics of pollution transfer was simulated in 2-dimensional channel, the pollution diffused rapidly to the center of flow in the main channel. Flow had much influenced in diffusion of pollution.
