A linearized model for hysteretic acoustic nonlinearity of imperfectly joined interface is proposed and analyzed by using Coulomb damping to investigate the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients for harmonic waves at the contact interface. Closed crack is modeled as non welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Based on the hysteretic contact stiffness of the contact interface, the reflected and transmitted waves are determined by deriving the tractions on both sides of the interface in terms of the discontinuous displacements across the interface. It is found that the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves are dependent on the frequency and the hysteretic stiffness. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, the higher reflection and lower transmission are obtained. It also shows that the hysteresis of the interface increases the reflection coefficient, but reduces the transmission coefficient. A fatigue crack is also made in aluminum specimen to demonstrate these characteristics of the reflection and transmission of contact interfaces.

Partial rotor rub occurs when an obstacle on the stator of a rotating machinery disturbs the free whirling motion of a rotor, which is more common than full annular rub for the cases of rubbing in rotating machinery. The nonlinearity due to the intermittent contacts and friction during partial rotor rub makes the phenomenon complex. The several nonlinear phenomena of superharmonics, subharmonics, and jump phenomenon are demonstrated for the partial rub using an experimental apparatus in this study. A piecewise-linear model and a rebound model using the coefficient of restitution are investigated on the basis of experimental observations in order to adopt as an analytical model of the contact between the rotor and stator during whirling motion. The contact stiffness, coefficient of restitution, and friction coefficient for the contact during partial rub are calculated from the comparison between the numerical simulation and the experimental results. Also, the numerical simulations for the model of partial rub are done for the various system parameters of clearance, contact stiffness, and friction coefficient in order to find the nonlinear behavior of partial rotor rub.
High temperature micro pressure sensors were fabricated by using polycrystalline 3C-SiC piezoresistors grown on oxidized SOI substrates by APCVD. These have been made by bulk micromachining under $1{\times}1mm^2$ diaphragm and Si membrane thickness of $20{\mu}m$. The pressure sensitivity of implemented pressure sensors was 0.1 mV/$V{\cdot}bar$. The nonlinearity and the hysteresis of sensors were ${\pm}0.44%{\cdot}FS$ and $0.61%{\cdot}FS$. In the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ with 5 bar FS, TCS (temperature coefficient of sensitivity), TCR (temperature coefficient of resistance), and TCGF (temperature coefficient of gauge factor) of the sensor were -1867 ppm/$^{\circ}C$, -792 ppm/$^{\circ}C$, and -1042 ppm/$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

A new linearization model for MR dampers is analyzed. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force model of MR damper can be modeled as a hyperbolic tangent function of currents, positions, and velicities, which is an algebraic function with constant parameters. Model parameters can be identified with numerical method using experimental force-velocity-position data obtained from various operating conditions. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force can be linearized with a given slope of damping coefficient if there exist corresponding currents to compensate for the nonlinearity. The corresponding currents can be calculated from the inverse model when the given linear damping force is set equal to the nonlinear hysteretic damping force. The linearization controller is realized in a DSP controller such that the corresponding currents to satisfy a given damping coefficient should be calculated. Experiments show that the current inputs to the MR damper produce linearized damping force with a given slope of the damping coefficient.

The objective of this study is to evaluate heat transfer coefficient distribution during heat treatment by inverse analysis. As a first procedure, the inverse heat transfer formulation by using two dimensional finite element method has been developed. The formulation can handlematerial nonlinearity and allow arbitrary placement and number of sensors. The formulation was verified through application to simulated exact and inexact measurements.
We show the existence of ground state and orbital stability of standing waves of nonlinear $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger$ equations with singular linear potential and essentially mass-subcritical power type nonlinearity. For this purpose we establish the existence of ground state in $H^1$. We do not assume symmetry or monotonicity. We also consider local and global well-posedness of Strichartz solutions of energy-subcritical equations. We improve the range of inhomogeneous coefficient in [5, 12] slightly in 3 dimensions.

In this paper, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method was used as an uncertainty assessment tool for air flow, net thrust measurement. Uuncertainty sources of the net thrust measurement were analyzed, and the probability distribution characteristics of each source were discussed. Detailed MCS methodology was described including the effect of the number of simulation. Compared to the conventional sensitivity coefficient method, the MCS method has advantage in the uncertainty assessment. The MCS is comparatively simple, convenient and accurate, especially for complex or nonlinear measurement modeling equations. The uncertainty assessment result by MCS was compared with that of the conventional sensitivity coefficient method, and each method gave different result. The uncertainties in the net thrust measurement by the MCS and the conventional sensitivity coefficient method were 0.906% and 1.209%, respectively. It was concluded that the first order Taylor expansion in the conventional sensitivity coefficient method and the nonlinearity of model equation caused the difference. It was noted that the uncertainty assessment method should be selected carefully according to the mathematical characteristics of the model equation of the measurement.
Employing non-associated flow rule and Power-Law failure criterion, the failure mechanisms of tunnel roof in homogeneous and layered soils are studied in present analysis. From the viewpoint of energy, limit analysis upper bound theorem and variation principle are introduced to study the influence of dilatancy on the collapse mechanism of rectangular tunnel considering effects of supporting force and seepage force. Through calculation, the collapsing curve expressions of rectangular tunnel which are excavated in homogeneous soil and layered soils respectively are derived. The accuracy of this work is verified by comparing with the existing research results. The collapsing surface shapes with different dilatancy coefficients are draw out and the influence of dilatancy coefficient on possible collapsing range is analyzed. The results show that, in homogeneous soil, the potential collapsing range decreases with the decrease of the dilatancy coefficient. In layered soils, the total height and the width on the layered position of possible collapsing block increase and the width of the falling block on tunnel roof decrease when only the upper soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease. When only the lower soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease or both layers' dilatancy coefficients decrease, the range of the potential collapsing block reduces.

A computational study on the supersonic flow around the lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. Case studies have been performed by comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of a missile body for several different jet flow conditions, angle of attacks, circumferential jet locations, and spouting jet angles. For the several different jet flow conditions, which include the jet pressure, the jet Mach number, and the corresponding jet mass flow rate, the results show that the normal force coefficient is almost proportional to the jet thrust but the moment coefficient is not. Distinctly different flow phenomena can be noticed as the pressure ratio and the jet Mach number increase. By investigating the angle of attack effect to the normal force and the pitching moment, it has been identified that the normal force and the pitching moment show nonlinearity with respect to the angle of attack. From the detailed flow field analyses with respect to the jet flow conditions and the angle of attacks, it is verified that most of the normal force loss and the pitching moment generation are taken place at the low-pressure region behind the jet nozzle. Furthermore, the normal force and the pitching moment characteristics of the missile have been identified by comparing different circumferential jet locations and spouting jet angles.
The analysis of nonlinear equivalent circuit and the resonance characteristics of input current and output voltage were simulated, and their electrical properties are discussed in the transverse-type piezoelectric ceramic transformer. The nonlinear resonance characteristics of input current and output voltage showed by the thermal effect due to a higher driving current, the nonlinearity increased greatly as driving current increased. When load resistor was 100[M.ohm.], the nonlinear coefficient was -1.3. The nonlinear resonance curve of input current and output voltage for a variation of input voltage and load resistor agreed with the discussed theory. The output voltage increased nearly proportioned to input voltage when load resistors were below 50[M.ohm.], the voltage step-up ratio decreased when a load resistor was 100[M.ohm.] and their maximum value was 950.
