  • The interest in the use of borate crystals in ultraviolet(UV) nonlinear optics(NLO) has increased because all solid-stste UV lasers obtained with NLO are in highly demand. Much effort has been spent on developing borates series, such as{{{{ { beta -BaB }_{2 } {O }_{4 }(BBO), {LiB }_{ 3}{O }_{5 }(LBO)}}}} and{{{{{ CsKiB}_{6 }{O }_{10 }(CLBO)}}}} in this decade. Recently another new borate crystals, {{{{{ YCa}_{4 }O({BO }_{3 })_{3}}}}} and{{{{{Gd }_{x }{Y }_{1-x }{Ca }_{4 }O({BO }_{ 3})({Gd }_{x }{Y }_{1-x }COB)}}}} have been developed by the present authors. Here, the growth and NLO properties of YCOB and {{{{ {Gd }_{ x} {Y }_{ 1-x} }}}}CO B crystal are reported and their properties discussed in relation to those of other nonlinear optical crystals, such as LBO.

Quantitative Determination of the Chromophore Alignment Induced by Electrode Contact Poling in Self-Assembled NLO Materials

  • The electrode contact poling is one of the efficient tools to induce a stable polar order of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores in the solid film. Self-assembled NLO chromophores with high electro-optic (E-O) activities were utilized for quantitative determination of the chromophore order induced under contact poling by spectroscopic changes. We found that NLO chromophores rarely decompose under the high electric field during contact poling. The absorption spectra were de-convoluted into a sum of Gaussian components to separate energy transitions for a binary composite system which contains a secondary guest chromophore AJC146 in the self-assembled chromophore HDFD. Poling efficiency was significantly improved in the binary system compared to the individual components.

펄스 corona 배향된 비선형광학 고분자박막의 제2 고조파발생 (Second harmonic generation of pulsed corona - poled nonlinear optical polymer films)

  • 비선형광학(NLO) 곁가지형 고분자계 N-(4-nitrophenul)-(L)-prolinol-poly (p-phenylene terephthalates)로 제작된 박막의 분자 배향거동을 제2 고조파발생(SHG)의 비선형광응답을 사용하여 연구하였다. 새로운 펄스 corona 배향 방법으로 NLO 발색단과 고분자 줄기를 비중심대칭 구조로 배향시켜 SHG 신호를 발생시켰다. 유리전이온도 70$^{\circ}C$를 중심으로 25$^{\circ}C$에서 80$^{\circ}C$까지 온도영역에서 반복율을 0.5 ㎑에서 10 ㎑까지 변화시키면서 인가한 펄스 고압으로 corona 배향한 결과로 곁가지 발색단과 고분자 주사슬이 스스로 재 정렬하여 형성한 구역구조를 원자간력 현미경(AFM)으로 관측하였다. 펄스 corona 전압 인가로 NLO 발색단 배향도가 증가되고, 동시에 고분자박막의 가시적손상을 획기적으로 줄이면서 SHG 신호가 증대되었으며 배향 후 이완거동도 개선되었다. 이 새로운 펄스 corona 배향 실험으로 NLO 발색단 및 고분자 주사슬이 배향과정에서 비등방으로 재배열하는 현상을 in situ로 입증할 수 있었다.

  • New Y-type polyester (3) containing nitrophenylazoresorcinoxy groups as NLO chromophores, which are components of the polymer backbone, was prepared and characterized. Polyester 3 is soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and acetone. It shows a thermal stability up to $240^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near $116^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer film at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength is around $4.63{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibits a thermal stability even at $4^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and there is no SHG decay below $120^{\circ}C$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

  • 2,4-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)benzylidenemalononitrile (3) was prepared and polymerized with terephthaloyl chloride and adipoyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyesters 4 and 5 containing dioxybenzylidenemalononitrile groups as NLO-chromophores, which constituted parts of the polymer backbone. The resulting polymers 4 and 5 are soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymers 4 and 5 showed thermal stability up to 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperatures obtained from differential scanning calorimetry in the range 83-94 ${^{\circ}C}$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around $6.48\;{\times}\;10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability even at 10 ${^{\circ}C}$ higher than $T_g$ and no significant SHG decay was observed below 105 ${^{\circ}C}$ partially due to the main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

The resulting polymer 4 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymer 4 shows thermal stability up to $280^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperature obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near $105^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength is around 2.42 pm/V. The dipole alignment exhibits high thermal stability up to near $T_g$, and there is no SHG decay below $100^{\circ}C$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

  • A novel T-type polyurethane 7 containing 1-(2,5-dioxyphenyl)-2-(5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thienyl)ethenes as NLO chromophores, which constitute part of the polymer backbone, was prepared. Polyurethane 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as DMF and DMSO. It shows a thermal stability up to $270^{\circ}C$ from TGA thermogram with $T_g$ value obtained from DSC thermogram near $155^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer film at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength is $3.56{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. Polymer 7 exhibits a thermal stability even at $5^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and no significant SHG decay is observed below $160^{\circ}C$, which is acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications.

It showed a thermal stability up to $300^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis thermogram and the glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry thermogram was around $113^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at 1,560 nm fundamental wavelength was around 1.85 pm/V. The dipole alignment exhibits a greater thermal stability even at $10^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and there is no SHG decay below $125^{\circ}C$ due to the partial mainchain character of the polymer structure, which is acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications.
