Wharfs are essential to shipping and support very large gravity loads on both a short-term and long-term basis which cause quite large seismic internal forces. Therefore, these structures are vulnerable to seismic activities. As they are supported on vertical and/or batter piles, soil-pile interaction effects under earthquake events have a great importance in seismic resistance which is not yet fully understood. Seismic design codes have become more stringent and suggest the use of new design methods, such as Performance Based Design principles. According to Turkish Code for Coastal and Port Structures (TCCS 2008), the interaction between soil and pile should somehow be considered in the nonlinear analysis in an accurate manner. This study aims to explore the lateral load carrying capacity of recently designed wharf structures considering soil-pile interaction effects for different soil conditions. For this purpose, nonlinear structure analysis according to TCCS (2008) has been performed comparing simplified and detailed modeling results.
The nonlinear free vibration of a nanorod subjected to finite strain is investigated. The governing equation of motion in material configuration in terms of displacement is determined. By means of Galerkin method, the Fourier series solutions satisfying some typical boundary conditions are determined. The amplitude-frequency relationship and interaction between the modes are studied. The effects of nonlocal elasticity are shown for different length of nanotubes and nonlocal parameter. The results show that nonlocal effects lead to additional internal modal interaction for nanorod vibrations.
Tubes in heat exchanger of fuel rods in reactor core are supported at intemediate point by support p0lates or springs. Current practice is, in case of heat exchanger, to allow clearance between tube and support plate for design and manufacturing consideration. And in case of fuel rod the clearance in support point can be generated due to the support spring force relaxation. Flow-induced vibration of a tube can cause it to impact or rub against support plate or against adjacent tubes and can result in fretting-wear. The tube-to- support dynamic interaction is used to relate experimental wear data from single-span test rigs to real multi-span heat exchanger configurations. The dynamic interaction cna be measured during experimental wear tests. However, the dynamic interaction is difficult to measure in real heat exchangers and, therefore, analytical techniques are required to estimate this interaction. This paper describels the nonlinear impact model of DAGS(Dynamic Analysis of Gapped Structure) code which simulates the tube response to external sinusodial or step excitation and predicts tube motion and tube-to-support dynamic interaction. Three experimental measurements-two single span rods excited by sinusodial force and a two span rod impacted by a steel ball are compared from the simulation nonlinear model of DAGS code. The simulation results from DAGS code are in good agreement with measurements. Therefore, the developed model of DAGS code is good analytical tool for estimating tube-to-support dynamic interaction in real heat exchangers.

This paper demonstrates how nonlinear soil behavior in a soil-structure interaction system can be realistically incorporated by using a hybrid method in a nonlinear time-domain analysis. The hybrid method employs a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program coupled with a linear SSI program for the unbounded layered soil medium In order to verify the validity and applicability of the hybrid method, nonlinear earthquake response analyses are carried out for the Hualien free-field problem, in which the ground and underground accelerations were measured during several earthquake events, and for a 2-D subway station. It is found that the nonlinear earthquake responses predicted for the Hualien free-field using the hybrid method compare very well with the observed responses whereas the subway station example gives reasonable results.

The objective of the present work is to develop a time-domain numerical method of broadband noise in a cascade of airfoils. This paper focuses on dipolar broadband noise sources, resulting from the interaction of turbulent inflows with the flat-plate airfoil cascade. The turbulence response of a two-dimensional cascade is studied by solving both of the linearised and the full nonlinear Euler equations employing accurate higher order spatial differencing, time stepping techniques and non-reflecting inflow/outflow boundary condition. The time-domain result using the linearised Euler equations shows good agreement with the analytical solution using the modified LINSUB code. Through the comparison of the nonlinear time-domain result using the full nonlinear Euler equations with the linear, it is found that the acoustic mode amplitude of the nonlinear response is less than that of the linear response due to the energy cascade from low frequency components to the high frequency ones. Considering the merits of the time-domain methods over the typical time-linearised frequency-domain analysis, the current method is expected to be promising tools for analyzing the effects of the airfoil shapes, non-uniform background flow, linear-nonliear regimes on the broadband noise due to turbulence-cascade interaction.

Nonlinear interaction between directional wave components is theoretically analyzed in deep water. The perturbed solution for an irregular wave is derived accurate up to the third order of the wave steepness and it is shown that the wave characteristics are modulated due to the nonlinear interaction. The convergence rate of the perturbed solution depends on not only wave steepness but also wavelength ratio between wave components. The long-wave component of the perturbed solution converges rapidly. while the short-wave solution converges slowly or diverges. The short wave properties in a broad-band wave spectrum cannot accurately be obtained by the conventional wave-mode method because it fails to properly describe the modulation of short-wave frequency caused by the nonlinear interaction with much longer wave.

The skewness of near-bottom velocity distribution caused by the nonlinear interaction of the second order waves proposed by Wells (1967) has been re-evaluated. The direction of cross-shore sediment transport was related to the sign of the third moment (skewness) of velocity distribution, and a new concept of neutral depth which can explain the recovery of beach equilibrium after a disturbance is suggested. The seasonal change of beach profile due to the change of wave condition (storm-swell profile) is interpreted in terms of nonlinear interaction of the waves rather than the conventional wave steepness. The beach is eroded (storm profile) when the nonlinear interaction of the waves is strong (storm wave), whereas the beach is accreted (swell profile) when the nonlinear interaction is weak (swell wave).

The seismic analysis of structures without applying the effects of soil can undermine functional objectives of structure so that it can affect all the desired purposes at the design and control stages of the structure. In this research, employing OpenSees and MATLAB software simultaneously and developing a definite three-dimensional finite element model of a high-rise concrete structure, designed using performance-based plastic design approach, the performance of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Active Mass Damper (AMD) is both examined and compared. Moreover some less noted aspects such as nonlinear interaction of soil and structure, uplift, nonlinear behavior of structure and structural torsion have received more attention. For this purpose, the analysis of time history on the structural model has been performed under 22 far-field accelerogram records. Examining a full range of all structural seismic responses, including lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, lost plastic energy, number of plastic hinges, story shear force and uplift. The results indicate that TMD performs better than AMD except for lateral displacement and inter-story drift to control other structural responses. Because on the one hand, nonlinear structural parameters and soil-structure interaction have been added and on the other hand, the restriction on the control force applied that leads up to saturation phenomenon in the active control system affect the performance of AMD. Moreover, the control force applied by structural control system has created undesirable acceleration and shear force in the structure.
The main difference between a linear system and a nonlinear system is the existence of direct interactions between input signals. These interactions will be classified into three types, (1) self-interaction among different order terms of control signals, (2) static mutual interactions between the control signals, and (3) dynamic interactions through the coefficient venctor fields of the control variables. In this paper, we will show that interactions of type (2) and (3) can be avoided by applying an appropriate dynamic compensator, while the interaction of type (1) is fatal.
