  • The aerostatic instability of cable-supported bridges is studied, with emphasis placed on modeling of the geometric nonlinear effects of various components of cable-supported bridges. Two-node catenary cable elements, which are more rational than truss elements, are adopted for simulating cables with large or small sags. Aerostatic loads are expressed in terms of the mean drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients. The geometric nonlinear analysis is performed with the dead loads and wind loads applied in two stages. The critical wind velocity for aerostatic instability is obtained as the condition when the pitching angle of the bridge deck becomes unbounded. Unlike those existing in the literature, each intermediate step of the incremental-iterative procedure is clearly given and interpreted. As such, the solutions obtained for the bridges are believed to be more rational than existing ones. Comparisons and discussions are given for the examples studied.

  • In this paper, we present results of this that design of the multi-layer VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator), which is composed of the resonation circuit and the oscillation circuit, using EM simulator and nonlinear RF circuit simulator. EM simulator is used for acquiring EM(Electromagnetic) characteristics of conductor pattern as well as designing multi-layer VCO, Acquired EM characteristics of the circuit pattern was used like real components at nonlinear RF circuit simulator. Finally VCO is simulated at nonlinear RF circuit simulator. The material for the circuit pattern was Ag and the dielectric was Dupont #9599, which is applied for LTCC process. The structure is constructed with 4 conducting layer. Simulated results showed that the output level was about 1[dBm], the phase noise was 102 [dBc/Hz] at 30[kHz] offset frequency, the harmonics -8dBc, and the control voltage sensitivity of 30[MHz/V] with a DC current consumption of 10[mA].

  • This paper presents nonlinear analysis of a functionally graded square plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. The effect of non homogeneous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation has been performed for studying the effect of two parameters of assumed foundation on the mechanical and electrical components. A comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study.

  • Shaking table tests were performed to investigate dynamic behavior of a three dimensional flexible rectangular liquid storage tank. Response characteristics to the three components of translational motion and three component of rotational motion were studied. The aluminium tank was exposed to the shaking high enough to make it behave in nonlinear range. Only very limited amount of the data have been processed yet. Very interesting phenomena on the effects of non-symmetry have been observed and presented. Test results that show nonlinear behavior under the high intensity shaking are reported.

  • In this paper, The RF system of W-CDMA receiver is designed and the performance is analyzed. The linearity characteristic and the noise characteristic are presented in the performance. The linearity characteristic is analyzed by PN and IIP3. The noise characteristic is analyzed by NF. In addition, sweeping of the nonlinear components parameter affecting the linear performance is tested and the most maximal possible parameter to maintain the linear performance is introduced. The transceiver RF system of W-CDMA and cdma2000 is designed and presented adapting the nonlinear parameter introduced.

  • This paper investigates the harmonics of TCSC power transmission system having nonlinear VI characteristic loads. Nonlinear VI characteristic components are modelled with Nortons harmonic current sources. The system parameters such as line impedances admittances and node voltages and the thyristor switching action are described in complex Fourier series. EMTP simulation studies with a detailed three-phase TCSC power transmission system are also performed in order to verify the harmonic analysis at the steady state.

  • The robust stability problems for nominally linear system with nonlinear, structured perturbations arc considered with Lyapunov direct method. The Lyapunov direct method has been utilized to determine the bounds for nonlinear, time-dependent functions which can be tolerated by a stable nominal system. In most cases quadratic forms are used either as components of vector Lyapunov function or as a function itself. The resulting estimates are usually conservative. As it is known, often the conservatism of the bounds we propose to use a piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function. An example demonstrates application of the proposed method.

  • Many types of passive control devices have been recognized as effective tools for improving the seismic resistance of structures. A lot of past research has been carried out to study the response of structures equipped with energy-absorbing devices by assuming that the behavior of the beam-column systems are linearly elastic. However, linear theory may not be adequate for beams and columns during severe earthquakes. This paper presents the results of research on the nonlinear responses of structures with and without added passive devices under earthquakes. A new material model based on the plasticity theory and the two-surface model for beams and columns under six components of forces is proposed to predict the nonlinear behavior of beam-column systems. And a new nonlinear beam element in consideration of shear deformation is developed to analyze the beams and columns of a structure. Numerical results reveal that linear assumption may not be appropriate for beams and columns under seismic loadings, especially for unexpectedly large earthquakes. Also, it may be necessary to adopt nonlinear beam elements in the analysis and design process to assure the safety of structures with or without the control of devices.

  • In recent years, the induction machines are increasingly being used as self-excited induction generators (SEIG). This generator is especially widely employed for small-scale power plants driven by renewable energy sources. The application of power electronic components in the induction generator control (IGC) and the loading of SEIG using nonlinear loads will generate harmonic currents. This paper analyzes the propogation of harmonic currents on the SEIG with nonlinear loads. Transfer function method in the frequency domain is used to calculate the gain and phase angle of each harmonic current component which are generated by a nonlinear loads. Through the superposition approach, this method has also been used to analyze the propagation of harmonic currents from nonlinear load to the stator windings. The simulation for the propagation of harmonic currents for a 4 pole, 1.5 kW, 50Hz, 3.5A, Y-connected, rotor-cage SEIG with energy-saving lamps, have provided results almost the same with the experiment. It can prove that the validity of the proposed models and methods. The study results showed that the propagation of harmonic currents on the stator windings rejects high order harmonics and attenuates low order harmonics, consequently THDI diminish significantly on the stator windings.
