Cooling tower is analyzed as an assembly of layered nonlinear shell elements. Geometric representation of the shell is enabled through layered nonlinear shell elements to define the different layers of reinforcements and concrete by considering the material nonlinearity of each layer for the cooling tower shell. Modal analysis using Ritz vector analysis and nonlinear time history analysis by direct integration method have been carried out to study the effects of the inclination of the supporting columns of the cooling tower shell on its dynamic characteristics. The cooling tower is supported by I-type columns and ${\Lambda}$-type columns supports having the different inclination angles. Relevant comparisons of the dynamic response of the structural system at the base level (at the junction of the column and shell), throat level and at the top of the tower have been made. Dynamic response of the cooling tower is found to be significantly sensitive to the change of the inclination of the supporting columns. It is also found that the stiffness of the structure system increases with increase in inclination angle of the supporting columns, resulting in decrease of the period of the structural system. The participation of the stiffness of the tower in structural response of the cooling tower is fund to be dependent of the change in the inclination angle and even in the types of the supporting columns.

In this study procedure for finding out additional viscous damping required to meet a performance target of an asymmetric nonlinear structure is developed based on the design concept of Pauly. The behavior of an asymmetric nonlinear structure after yielding is investigated. Finally the required amount of equivalent damping is obtained using the direct-displacement-based design method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis.

Most structures are expected deform nonlinear and inelastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) is the most rigorous procedure to compute seismic performance in the various inelastic analysis methods. But nonlinear analysis procedures necessitate more reliable and practical tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method. This method is the concept of an equivalent linear system, wherein a linear system having reduced stiffness and increased damping is used to estimate the response of the nonlinear system. This procedure are conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for mixed building structure.

It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

Seismic fragility analysis has been developed to evaluate the seismic performance of existing nuclear power plants, but now its applicability has been extended to buildings and bridges. In general, the seismic fragility curves are evaluated from the nonlinear time-history analysis (THA) using many earthquake ground motions. Seismic fragility analysis using the nonlinear THA requires a time consuming process of structural modeling and analysis. To overcome this shortcoming of the nonlinear THA, simplified methods such as the displacement coefficient method (DCM) and the capacity spectrum method (CSM) are used for the seismic fragility analysis. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the seismic fragility curve calculated by the DCM and the CSM, the seismic fragility curves of a reinforced concrete shear wall structure calculated by the DCM and CSM are compared with those calculated by the nonlinear THA. In order to construct a numerical fragility curve, 190 artificially generated ground motions corresponding to the design spectrum and the methodology proposed by Shinozuka et al. are used.

The accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system(FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated that by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In the case that an earthquake load is defined with probabilistic characteristics, the corresponding response of the structure with FDS has probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake loads generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Finally, coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression analysis of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally the correlation between PDFs and statistical response distribution is presented.

Inelastic model of Second Jindo Bridge is investigated to perform nonlinear dynamic analyses with various earthquake ground motions. The modal analysis is performed to obtain dynamic characteristics of the bridge and verify the model. It proves that the model has an appropriate dynamic characteristic and its natural frequency is relatively low. Four ground motions are chosen for time history dynamic analyses; El Centro, Kobe, Taft, and Mexico earthquake. Each ground motion multiplied by specified factors to investigate damages of the structure. The analyses prove that responses of the bridge depend on the duration time and the frequency characteristics of ground motion, not only peak acceleration. Static push-over analysis of steel pylon shows that the dynamic analysis over-estimates the seismic behavior of steel pylon definitely. Nonlinear spring hinge model is suggest to improve the shortage of the inelastic model could not deliberate local buckling damage. According to the time history analysis of nonlinear spring hinge model, it is proved that the inelastic beam element analysis overestimate the seismic capacity of steel pylon unquestionably with a large amount of errors.

For analyzing seismic performance of long-span bridge for multi-support excitation and preparing technically and efficiently for a variety of design demands, the new module on multiple excitation was built in a reliable non-linear analysis program(RCAHEST) by using Influence Line Method, and the study on structures was performed previously. Also, the result of the analysis through RCAHEST was compared and verified with commercial finite element analysis program SAP2000 by using the feature of Multi-Support Excitation. From these results, nonlinear time history analysis considering multi-support excitation was studied after designing FE model of Incheon cable-stayed bridge. It was proved that the maximum response of horizontal displacement decreased as the time delay was increasing at all nodes of bridge. And then the serviceability of analysis model was evaluated by performing ultimate analysis under changes in maximum acceleration of seismic load data.

Responses of semi-rigid frames having different degrees of semi-rigidity obtained by the nonlinear static analysis (NSA) are evaluated at specific target displacements by comparing them with those obtained by the nonlinear time-history analysis (NTHA) for scaled earthquakes. The peak ground accelerations (PGA) of the earthquakes are scaled such that the obtained peak top story displacements match with the target displacements. Three different types of earthquakes are considered, namely, far-field and near-field earthquakes with directivity and fling-step effects. In order to make the study a comprehensive one, three degrees of semi-rigidity (one fully rigid and the other two semi-rigid), and two frames having different heights are considered. An ensemble of five-time histories of ground motion is included in each type of earthquake. A large number of responses are considered in the study. They include the peak top-story displacement, maximum inter-story drift ratio, peak base shear, total number of plastic hinges, and square root of sum of the squares (SRSS) of the maximum plastic hinge rotations. Results of the study indicate that the nonlinear static analysis provides a fairly good estimate of the peak values of top-story displacements, inter-story drift ratio (for shorter frame), peak base shear and number of plastic hinges; however, the SRSS of maximum plastic hinge rotations in semi-rigid frames are considerably more in the nonlinear static analysis as compared to the nonlinear time history analysis.
In this paper, the seismic analysis and the modeling techniques have been introduced for aseismic performances assessment, when seismic isolation bearings are applied on a real bridge. Nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out using finite element analysis program. In this study, EI Centro earthquake(1940, N00W), Mexico earthquake(1985, N90W), and earthquake simulation from modified SIMQKE are used as earthquake ground excitations. The seismic response of seismically isolated bridge is compared with that of a bridge using conventional Pot Bearings, after obtaining the displacements of the deck, the deformations of the piers, shear forces and moments of the bottoms of the piers. The analytical analysis results show that seismic isolation bearing, especially seismic isolation bearings with sliding mechanism, could reduce earthquake forces.
