A FEA model is proposed to study the effects of fiber waviness on tensile/comprssive nonlinear behaviors of thick unidirectional composites. In the analyses both material and geometical nonlinarities are considered. The predicted results from the FEA model are compared with those obtained from the previous analytical model (thin carpet model) Tensile/compressive tests are also conducted on the specimens with various controlled fiber waviness to obtain the nonlinear behaviors of composites experimentally. The predictions from the FEA model show better agreements with the experiments than those from the analytical model.

Tubular steel sections are widespread all over the world because of their strength and aesthetic appearance. Tubular steel members may exhibit local buckling such as elephant foot or overall buckling under extreme compression load. Recently, external bonding of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) sheets for strengthening these members has been explored through experimental research. This paper presents three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the structural behavior of strengthening tubular steel members with FRP against local and overall buckling phenomena. Out-of-roundness and out-of-straightness imperfections were introduced to the numerical models to simulate the elephant foot and overall buckling, respectively. The nonlinear analysis preferences such as the integration scheme of the shell elements, the algorithm for solution of nonlinear equations, the loading procedure, the bisection limits for the load increments, and the convergence criteria were set, appropriately enough, to successfully track the sophisticated buckling deformations. The agreement between the results of both the presented FEA and the experimental research was evident. The FEA results demonstrated the power of the presented rigorous FEA in monitoring the plastic strain distribution and the buckling phenomena (initiation and propagation). Consequently, the buckling process was interpreted for each mode (elephant foot and overall) into three sequential stages. Furthermore, the influence of FRP layers on the nonlinear analysis preferences and the results was presented.

Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behavior and strength of thick composite with fiber waviness are studied theoretically and experimentally. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) models are proposed to predict tensile/compressive nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites. In the FEA models, both material and geometric nonlinearities were incorporated into the model using energy density, iterative mapping and incremental method. Also Tsai-Wu criteria was adopted to predict the strength of thick composites with fiber waviness. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted on the specimens with uniform fiber waviness. It was observed that the degree of fiber waviness in composites significantly affected the nonlinear behavior and strength of the composites

In this study, both a finite element analysis and an experimental analysis are executed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of dielectric material effects on warpage. Also, viscoelastic material properties are measured by DMA and are considered in warpage simulation. A finite element analysis is done by using both thermal elastic analysis and a thermo-viscoelastic analysis to predict the nonlinear effects. For experimental study, specimens warpage of non-symmetric structure with body size of $22.5{\times}22.5$ mm, $37.5{\times}37.5$ mm and $42.5{\times}42.5$ mm are measured under the reflow temperature condition. From the analysis results, experimental warpage is not similar to FEA results using thermal elastic analysis but similar to FEA results using thermo-viscoelastic analysis. Also, its effect on substrate warpage is increased as core thickness is decreased and body size is getting larger. These FEA and the experimental results show that the nonlinear characteristics of dielectric material play an important role on substrate warpage. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that non-linear behavior characteristics of a dielectric material should be considered to control warpage of FCBGA substrate under conditions of geometry, structure and manufacturing process and so on.
A nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) model is presented for simulating the behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (RACFST) beam-columns subjected to constant axial compressive load and cyclically increasing flexural loading. The FEA model was developed based on ABAQUS software package and a displacement-based approach was used. The proposed engineering stress versus engineering strain relationship of core concrete with the effect of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement ratio was adopted in the FEA model. The predicted results of the FEA model were compared with the experimental results of several RACFST as well as the corresponding concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) beam-columns under cyclic loading reported in the literature. The comparison results indicated that the proposed FEA model was capable of predicting the load versus deformation relationship, lateral bearing capacity and failure pattern of RACFST beam-columns with an acceptable accuracy. A parametric study was further carried out to investigate the effect of typical parameters on the mechanism of RACFST beam-columns subjected to cyclic loading.

The major object of this paper is to propose a nonlinear finite element analysis(FEA) technique of steel coupling beams-wall connections governed panel shear failure using ABAQUS. Detailed finite element models are created by studying the monotonic load response of the designed steel coupling beams-wall connections. The developed models account for the effect of material inelasticity, concrete cracking, panel shear failure and geometric nonlinearity. In order to verify the proposed FEA model, this study attended experiment considered parameters to the steel beam : face bearing plates, and horizontal ties. And the analytical result attended by the proposed FEA model validated through comparisons with the experimental results. Finally, the study estimated the analytical values compared with ASCE Design Guidelines. At this time, the analysis showed good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results.
This paper presents a discussion of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when applied for the analysis of concrete elements reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The purpose of such nonlinear FEA model development is to create a tool that can be used for numerical parametric studies which can be used to extend the existing (and limited) experiment database. The presented research focuses on the numerical analyses of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements. FEA of concrete members reinforced with linear elastic brittle reinforcements (like GFRP) presents unique challenges when compared to the analysis of members reinforced with plastic (steel) reinforcements, which are discussed in the paper. Specifically, the behaviour and failure of GFRP reinforced members are strongly influenced by the compressive response of concrete and thus modelling of concrete behaviour is essential for proper analysis. FEA was performed using the commercial software ABAQUS. A damaged-plasticity model was utilized to simulate the concrete behaviour. The influence of tension, compression, dilatancy, mesh, and reinforcement modelling was studied to replicate experimental test data of beams previously tested at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Recommendations for the finite element modelling of beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements are offered. The knowledge gained from this research allows for the development of a rational methodology for modelling GFRP reinforced concrete beams, which subsequently can be used for extensive parametric studies and the formation of informed recommendations to design standards.
This work has the objective to analyze multibody mechanisms of inflatable structures for manned space applications. The focus is on the evaluation of the main characteristics of MaxFlex, a new module of MSC Adams including the effect of nonlinear flexible bodies. MaxFlex integrates the nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of Nastran-SOL400-and the Adams multibody capabilities in one unique solver, providing an improvement concerning the concept and technology based on the co-simulation among solvers. MaxFlex converts the equations of motion of the nonlinear FEA into phase-space form and discretizes them according to the multibody system integrator framework. The numerical results deal with an inflatable manned space module having rigid components and a flexible coating made of Kevlar. This paper is a preliminary assessment of the computational capabilities of the software and does not provide realistic guidelines for the actual design of the structure. The analysis leads to some recommendations related to the main issues to consider in a nonlinear simulation including both rigid and flexible components. The results underline the importance of realistic deployment times and applied forces. Also, a proper structural modeling is necessary, but can lead to excessive computational overheads.

Torque is proportional to the rate of change of inductance in a switched reluctance motor (SRM), and hence, phase inductance is an important parameter in determining the behavior of an SRM. Therefore, the accurate prediction of inductance with respect to rotor position makes a significant contribution to designing an SRM and its analytical approach is not straightforward due to nonlinear flux distribution. Although several different approaches using a finite element analysis (FEA) or curve-fitting tool have been employed to compute phase inductance [2-5], they are not suitable for a simple design procedure because the FEA necessitates a large amount of time in both modeling and solving with complexity for every motor design, and the curve-fitting requires the data of flux linkage from either an experimental test or an FEA simulation. In this paper, phase inductance is predicted by means of a permeance method, and the proposed approach is analytically verified in terms of the accuracy of estimated inductance compared to inductance obtained by FEA.

Flux linkage of phase windings or phase inductance is an important parameter in determining the behavior of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) [1-8]. Therefore, the accurate prediction of inductance at aligned and unaligned rotor positions makes a significant contribution to the design of an SRM and its analytical approach is not straightforward due to nonlinear flux distribution. In this paper, phase inductance at aligned and unaligned rotor positions is estimated by means of numerical method and magnetic equivalent circuit as well, and the proposed approach is analytically verified in terms of the accuracy of estimated inductance compared to inductance computed by an FEA simulation.
