  • This paper proposes the design of LQ-PSS(linear quadratic power system stabilizer) for improving power system stability using genetic algorithm(GA). We are tuned weighting matriecs of LQ-PSS using GA. To evalute the usefulness of the proposed method. we performed the nonlinear simulation on a single machine infinite system. As results of the simulation. the proposed method shows the better control performance than CPSS(conventional power system stabilizer) in trems of settling time and damping effects.

  • The emerging sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has a potential for cost-effective maintenance of aging civil infrastructure systems. The author proposes to integrate continuous and global monitoring using on-structure sensors with targeted local non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Significant technical challenges arise, however, from the lack of cost-effective sensors for monitoring spatially large structures, as well as reliable methods for interpreting sensor data into structural health conditions. This paper reviews recent efforts and advances made in addressing these challenges, with example sensor hardware and health monitoring software developed in the author's research center. The hardware includes a novel fiber optic accelerometer, a vision-based displacement sensor, a distributed strain sensor, and a microwave imaging NDE device. The health monitoring software includes a number of system identification methods such as the neural networks, extended Kalman filter, and nonlinear damping identificaiton based on structural dynamic response measurement. These methods have been experimentally validated through seismic shaking table tests of a realistic bridge model and tested in a number of instrumented bridges and buildings.

  • The effect of frequency and amplitude of the OWC (Oscillating Water Column) motion on the nonlinear reaction forces in an air duct arc studied experimentally. Experimental OWC model is idealized as a simple circular cylinder with an orifice type air duct located at the middle of the top rid. Reaction forces due to forced heave oscillation are measured and analyzed. By subtracting the effect of inertia forces and restoring forces, pneumatic damping force and added spring force are deduced. The effects of the frequency and amplitude of the heave motion are discussed. Also, the effects of solidity of the duct on the reaction forces are discussed.

  • In this paper, an robust adaptive backstepping controller is proposed for the speed control of separately excited DC motor with uncertainties and disturbances. Armature and field resistance, damping coefficient and load torque are considered as uncertainties and noise generated at applying load torque to motor is also considered. It shows that the backstepping algorithm can be used to solve the problems of nonlinear system very well and robust controller can be designed without the variation of adaptive law. Simulation and experiment results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • Rain-wind induced vibrations of cables are a challenging problem in the design of cable-stayed bridges. The precise excitation mechanism of the complex interaction between structure, wind and rain is still unknown. A theoretical model that is able to accurately simulate the observed phenomena is not available. This paper presents a mathematical model describing rain-wind induced vibrations as movement-induced vibrations using the quasi-steady strip theory. Both, the vibrations of the cable and the movement of the water rivulet on the cable surface can be described by the model including all geometrical and physical nonlinearities. The analysis using the stability and bifurcation theory shows that the model is capable of simulating the basic phenomena of the vibrations, such as dependence of wind velocity and cable damping. The results agree well with field data and wind tunnel tests. An extensive experimental study is currently performed to calibrate the parameters of the model.

  • This paper presents and efficient improvement of the iterative eigenvalue calculation method and the selection of initial values in AESOPS algorithm. To determine the initial eigenvalues of the system, system state matrix is constructed with the two-axis generator model. From the submatrices including synchronous and damping coefficients, the initial eigenvalues are calculated by the QR method. Participation factors are also calculated from the above submatrices in order to determine the generators which have a important effect to the specific oscillation mode. Also, the heuristically approximated eigenvalue calculation method in the AESOPS algorithm is transformed to the Newton Raphson Method which is largely used in the nonlinear numerical analysis. The new methods are developed from the AESOPS algorithm and thus only a few calculation steps are added to practice the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, an robust adaptive backstepping controller is proposed for the speed control of separately excited DC motor in pure electric vehicles. A general electric drive train of PEV is conceptually rearrange to major subsystems as electric propulsion, energy source, and auxiliary subsystem and the load torque is modeled by considering the aerodynamic, rolling resistance and grading resistance. Armature and field resistance, damping coefficient and load torque are considered as uncertainties and noise generated at applying load torque to motor is also considered. It shows that the backstepping algorithm can be used to solve the problems of nonlinear system very well and robust controller can be designed without the variation of adaptive law. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • In this paper, novel concept of a photovoltaic(PV) power generation system adding the function of active filter(AF) is proposed. Even PV power generation system can be treated to a harmonics source for the power distribution system, it is necessary that the function of AF system in grid connected PV power generation system. Active Filters intended for harmonic solutions are expending their functions from harmonic compensation of nonlinear loads into harmonic isolation between utilities and consumer, and harmonic damping throughout power distribution system. So, the PV system combined the function of AF system can be usefully applied in power distribution system. Here, the control strategy of PV-AF system is introduced.

  • We analyze the parametric amplification by the nonlinear characteristics in a semiconductor laser using a perturbation theory and discuss its result. The parametric gain increases with increase of the pump modulation current. It is due to shift of the resonance frequency as the pump modulation current increases. However, it decreases with increase of the bias current and damping constant. Also, it needs phase matching between the pump modulation current and signal modulation current to maximize the parametric gain. The gain decreases for a large signal modulation current due to the saturation of the amplified power. power.

  • Dynamic behaviors and stability of an optical disk drive coupled with an automatic ball balancer(ABB) are analyzed by a theoretical approach. The feeding system is modeled a rigid body with six degree-of-freedom. Using Lagrange's equation, we derive the nonlinear equations of motion for a non-autonomous system with respect to the rectangular coordinate. To investigate the dynamic stability of the system in the neighborhood of the equilibrium positions, the monodromy matrix technique is applied to the perturbed equations. On the other hand, time responses are computed by the Runge-Kutta method. We also investigate the effects of the damping coefficient and the position of ABB on the dynamic behaviors of the system.
