Various heat treatment and surface coating methods have been applied to machine parts. Nowadays, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are widely used because of their excellent tribological characteristics. Despite the numerous studies on DLC-coated engineering surfaces, the exact wear mechanisms related to the coating thickness and elastic modulus have not been fully examined. In this study, a sliding contact problem between a small spherical hard particle and a DLC-coated steel surface is analyzed using a nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The maximum principal stress distributions and deformed surfaces are compared for different coating thicknesses and Young's modulus values. Plastically deformed surface shapes such as a groove and torus indicate that the most dominant wear mechanism for a DLC-coated surface is abrasive wear. Fatigue wear can also play a role in a case where the coating thickness is relatively large and the elastic modulus is high.
When a crack exists under a residual stress, for example in welds, the crack can be closed and it shows non symmetric behavior for tension and compression. Ultrasonic detection method for those nonlinear cracks has been developed recently. The method uses the higher order harmonics generating at the crack surface. In this study, parameter study was carried out for the analysis of the harmonics generation at a nonlinear contact interface as a preliminary study for general 3-dimensional cracks. One-dimensional problem with simple bilinear behavior for the contacting surface was considered. The amplitude of second harmonic to the fundamental wave was obtained for various stiffness ratios, incident frequencies, and the contacting layer thicknesses.

In this research, the design methods of the rocket joint parts were suggested. In the first section, nonlinear finite element analyses for joint parts of a composite pressure tank were performed. In the analyses, the detailed finite element modeling was performed and complex boundary conditions(contact problem, clamping force) were considered. Secondly, several guidelines for the design of joint parts were suggested. The parametric study for geometric design variables was peformed. Finally, the parametric study result was categorized for the multi-Joint part design of the axi-symmetric composite structure.

A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the effect of the geometry on the strength of an unidirectional and fabric hybrid laminated composite joint. Tests are conducted for the specimens with nine different edge-to-hole diameter or width-to-hole diameter ratios. For the finite element analysis, the characteristic length method is used, and the tests for determining the characteristic length are performed additionally. Nonlinear contact problem between the pin and laminate is modeled by the gap element in MSC/NASTRAN. Tsai-Wu failure criteria is applied to the stress on the characteristic curve. The finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in strength of composite joint. Results of the parametric study shows the effect of the geometry is remarkable in the specimens with width-to-hole diameter ratio less than 2.8 and edge-to-hole diameter ratio less than 1.4.
The rollers of cylindrical roller bearing are axially profiled to relieve high edge stress concentration caused by mainly their finite length and by misalignment. In this paper, a numerical analysis is carried to study the EHL of misaligned (tilted) rollers with axially profiled ends. Using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method, the highly nonlinear EHL problems are systematically solved. Physically consistent solutions are obtained for moderate load, material parameters and very small misalignment. For different misalignment angles, contours and sectional plots of pressure and film shape near both edge regions are compared. The asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes show that the EHL results of finite line contacts are highly dependent upon very small amounts of roller misalignment. Especially, the effect of misalignment on the EHL pressure distribution is much higher than the film shapes.

Coiling processes of filaments need precise work and standardization. It is important to maintain equal pitch of filaments. Uniform pitch of filaments is one of the dominant elements of life time and efficiency of bulbs. First coiling process of filament wires is modeled by nonlinear contact problem between filaments and mandrel. Analysis of coiling process using finite element method is conducted to consider manufacturing parameters and pitch distance is calculated under the given conditions. Also image detecting system is developed to inspect uniformity of pitch. This system will be used to inspect quality of filaments during coiling processes.
Tapered roller bearings are widely used in equipment where high combined thrust and radial loads are experienced. A certain amount of tilting between the tapered rollers and the races always occurs because of bending moment load conditions and shaft deflection. It is now well understood that a coherent elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film separates the rollers and races. In spite of extensive study on EHL problems for over half a century, relatively few studies have focused on the finite line contacts problem. This study presents a complete numerical analysis of the effects of roller tilting on the EHL characteristics in a tapered roller bearing. We systematically analyze this highly nonlinear problem using finite differences with fully non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. Detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes are presented under moderate loads and material parameters. A very small roller tilting significantly affects the pressure distributions and film shapes near both ends of the roller. Moreover, the effect of tilting on the EHL characteristics at the small end is much greater than that at the large end. Therefore, in designing optimum profiles for tapered roller bearings, the profile radius should be larger at the small end.

The unsteady problem of a rigid body impact onto a floating plate is studied. Both the plate and the water are at rest before impact. The plate motion is caused by the impact force transmitted to the plate through an elastic layer with viscous damping on the top of the plate. The hydrodynamic force is calculated by using the second-order model of plate impact by Iafrati and Korobkin (2011). The present study is concerned with the deceleration experienced by a rigid body during its collision with a floating object. The problem is studied also by a fully-nonlinear computational-fluid-dynamics method. The elastic layer is treated with a moving body-fitted grid, the impacting body with an immersed boundary method, and a discrete-element method is used for the contact-force model. The presence of the elastic layer between the impacting bod- ies may lead to multiple bouncing of them, if the bodies are relatively light, before their interaction is settled and they continue to penetrate together into the water. The present study is motivated by ship slamming in icy waters, and by the effect of ice conditions on conventional free-fall lifeboats.

In this study, the flexural/shear behavior characteristics of perfobond FRP-concrete composite beams using an FRP plate with perforated webs as formwork and reinforcement are analyzed through an analytical method. Compared with the existing experimental results, we have proved its usefulness and use it in future practice. When the nonlinearity is very large in this case, the nonlinear finite element analysis by an explicit method will be effective. The concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model adopted in this study is considered to be able to adequately simulate the nonlinear behavior of concrete, and the determination of several variable factors required in the model is compared with the experimental results and values used in the study. This recommendation will require review and adjustment for more diverse cases. The effect of the perfobond of the composite beam with perforated web is considered to be somewhat effective in terms of securing the initial stiffness, but in the case of the apex, it is considered that the cross-sectional loss and the effect of improving the bonding force should be properly arranged. The contact problem, such as slipping of the FRP plate and concrete, is considered to be one of the reasons that the initial stiffness is slightly larger than the test result, and the slightly difference from the experimental results is attributed to the separation problem between concrete and FRP after the peak.

The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes.
