  • A mesostructured form of carbon was fabricated from a template of mesostructured silica by using pentane, an aliphatic hydrocarbon precursor. To synthesize the mesostructured silica, a buffered (pH of 6.5) mixture of nonionic Pluronic P123 surfactant, sodium silicate, and acetic acid were used. The impregnated silica with Fe$(CO)_5$ (wt 5%) and pentane was placed in a quartz tube, treated with pentane vapor at 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ for two hours to synthesize the mesostructured carbon. The XRD patterns of the carbon replica in the low/wide angle regions, its TEM images, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm revealed that the long-range framework order of mesostructure with the pore size centered on 2.8 nm was maintained to some extent mainly due to some portions of mesophase carbon that work as a support to fix the hexagonal frameworks by anchoring on the pore surface with an improved graphitic character. The dc conductivity of the mesostructured carbon in pressed powder form at 6.0 MPa was 2.08 S/cm.

  • The effects of the presence of commercial non-ionic surfactants on the cell growth and diesel degradation by Pseudomonas sp. OSD were studied. Most surfactants inhibited the diesel biodegradation at high concentration(1000mg/1). However, some surfactants showed no inhibition at lower concentrations. Tween 20, Brij 58, Brij 78 were not inhibitory to the diesel biodegradation even at high concentration. These chosen surfactants has relatively high HLB values. There exists complicated relationship for diesel bioremediation between cell hydrophobicity, surfactant HLB, contaminants, an soil.

  • The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.

  • Properties of aqueous solution, that is, the viscosities and solubilities of benzene were observed in relation to critical micelle concentration of each alkyl aldehyde polyoxyethylene glycol acetal type surfactant. These showed that the mininum points in specific viscosity/concentration-concentration curves were corresponded with the critical micelle concentration obtained by surface tension and appeared the remarkable increase of non-Newtonics according to the increase of the number of carbon in hydrophobic groups. The fluidity of non-Newtonics is not observed by a little increase of the degree of polymerization in polyoxyethylene glycol groups.

  • The effect of temperature, washing time, mechanical agitation and concentration on the removal from cotton fabrics of tripalmitin labelled with C\sup 14\ were studied. In order to correlate the detergency with the removal mechanism, solubilization and suspending power of surfactants were observed. RESULTS : 1. The detergency from cotton fabric was increased with elevating temperature and over the temperature of maximum detergency, the rate of soil removal was rather decreased. 2. The effects of washing time and mechanical agitation on the removal of triplamitin were obvious at lower temperature. 3. The removal of tripalmitin was remarkably increased at higher concentration over cmc for all surfactants. The detergency of nonionic surfactant -NPPG- was best, this was resulted from its large solubilization and suspending power.

  • The nonionic surfactant properties of ethoxylated azo dyes, such ai cloud point and surface tension have been investigated. The synthesized ethoxylated azo dyes could dye polyester fabric without any special pre-treatment. When the average number of ethylene oxide (EO) in the ethoxylated azo dye reached 6, its fixation could exceed $90^{\circ}C$ from the thermosol dyeing process. The average degree of condensation of ethylene glycol in the chain was interrelated with the dyeing results and did not affect on the maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) of the polyoxyethylene dye. When the average length of polyoxyethylene chain decreased, the molecular weight of dyes became smaller and the fixation of dyes was improved.

  • The oil-based magnetic fluids were prepared with synthesized ultrafine magnette by allowing surfactactants such as sodium oleate and aliquat 336 to adsorb on the surface of magnetite particles. The dispersion ratio of oil-based magnetic fluids was higher than 90% when the amount of sodium oleate and aliqua 336 were more than 2.63$\times$10-2 mol and 6.56$\times$10-3 mol for 20g of magnetite respectively. The dispersion ratio of oil-based magnetic fluids with the amount of secondary surfactant addition was higher than 90% when oil-based magnetic fluids were prepared with aliquat 336 of cationic type. However oil-based magnetic fluids prepared with surfactants of anionic and nonionic type showed lower dispersion than whose with cationic surfac-tants.

  • Effect of Pluronic F-68, a nonionic surfactant, on the extracellular production of hGM-CSF in transgenic Nicotiαna tabacum cell suspension culture was investigated. The addition of 5 g/L Pluronic F-68 did not affect the cell growth but increased the extracellular production of hGM-CSF by two-fold. This may be due to the enhanced permeability of the cell membrane by the interaction between the Pluronic F-68 and the cell membrane.

  • An important issue in the oxidation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is enzyme inactivation during the reaction. This study was initiated to investigate the ability of two nonionic surfactants (Tween 20 and Tween 80) to mitigate HRP inactivation. The surfactants were tested at concentrations below and above their critical micelle concentrations (CMCs). Enhancement of PCP oxidation was observed at sub-CMCs, indicating effective protection of HRP by the two surfactants. Maximum levels of PCP removal were observed when the concentrations of Tween 20 and Tween 80 were 40 and 50% of the CMCs, respectively At supra-CMCs, both surfactants caused a noticeable reduction in the extent of PCP removal.

  • The soil remediation by non-ionic surfactant solutions ($C_{12}H_{25}O(CH_2CH_2O)_5H$ and Triton X-100) was studied. Depending on the amounts and use of co-surfactants, MPT(phase inversion temperature), dynamic interfacial tension, and the detergency efficiency of the surfactant solutions in soil were investigated. The oils used were kerosene, n-hexadecane, and paraffin oil. With respect to a higher detergency efficiency, a lower interfacial tension and the MPT was very important. The $C_{12}H_{25}O(CH_2CH_2O)_5H$ was better than Triton X-100 on the oil removal from the soil and the effect of oil kinds was kerosene>paraffin $oil{\geq}n-hexadecane$. The co-surfactant, n-dodecanol, reduced the MPT compared to no addition of this, whereas it did not enhance the detergent efficiency.
