  • The technology of sulfur lamps that has physical and electrical characteristics comparable to current HID source has been reported. The fundamental principles of the operation of microwave discharges that are used to convert microwave energy to broad spectrum visual light are known. In this paper, emission dependance of microwave discharges in mixture content of sulfur with noble gases was studied. It is shown that the excitation of this gaseous mixture is carried out in two phases: (l) ionization of noble gas atoms by a microwave field and (2) the consequent maintenance of slightly ionized nonequilibrium plasma by the field. These two processes have essentially various thresholds for the microwave pump. The purpose of this work is to investigate spectral properties of the high frequency discharges in a mixture sulfur vapors with noble gases.

Sequestration of Organic Pollutants in the Environments: Implications on Bioavailability and Bioremediation

  • For the last several decades, the fate of organic pollutants has been extensively studied in natural environments with emphasis on sorption and desorption phenomena. Although the mechanisms involved are not clear yet there is a consensus about the existence of hysteresis in the sorption and desorption of organic pollutants. Furthermore, it is found that hysteresis is the outcome of slow nonequilibrium sorption of organic pollutants, which results in the formation of desorption-resistant fractions of the pollutants. Desorption-resistant fractions may increase as a function of the residence time of the pollutants in the environments. Field monitoring data show a slow but continuous decline of chemicals applied to soil, followed by little or no subsequent disappearance. One plausible explanation for such resistance to biodegradation, desorption, or extraction can be attributed the gradual movement of organic pollutants to less accessible remote sites inside the matrix with time. This phenomenon has been termed sequestration or aging. The fact that some pollutants are sequestered in soil with time may have a great impact on bioremediation and risk assessment, Some portion of the resistant pollutants may still be present in the environments after bioremediation. It requires vigorous means to completely remove the aged portion that may not be further bioavailable. However, precaution should be taken since aging is not always evident. Aging seems to be soil and chemical specific.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of impurity level and fabrication processes on the strength, fracture toughness and fatigue resistance of 7075, 7050 and 7175 high strength aluminum forgings. It has been verified that plane strain fracture toughness and fatigue characteristics of a specially processed 7175S-T74 alloy is superior to a conventionally processed 7075-T6/T73, 7050-T74 and 7175-T74 alloys. These beneficial effects primarily arise from two view points, i.e., the effect of reducing the impurity level of iron and silicon has significantly diminished the size and volume fraction of second phase particles such as $Al_7Cu_2Fe$ and $Mg_2Si$. Futher reduction of the amount of nonequilibrium second phase particles has been observed by applying a special fabrication process.

  • 본 연구는 공급계 관에서 극저온 연료의 일부가 기화될 경우에 로켓엔진이 지속적으로 작동될 수 있는지의 여부를 묻는 문제와 관련되어 있다. 유동장 내에 증기가 발생하는 것을 모사하는 실험의 결과분석으로 관내의 압력조건에서 극저온 유체의 온도가 포화온도보다 낮을 경우 발생된 증기가 완전히 응축될 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 극저온 유체의 정상유동에서 비평형 응축영역을 계산하기 위한 경험관계식을 무차원형태로 구하였고, 이 경험관계식이 실제적으로 활용 될 수 있는 분야를 제시하였다.

비평형 2.5 난류모델을 이용한 라그란지안 입자 확산모델 개발 (Development of Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model Based on a Non-equilibrium 2.5 Level Closure Turbulence Model)

  • A Lagrangian particle dispersion mode l(LPDM) coupled with the prognostic flow model based on nonequilibrium level 2.5 turbulence closure has been dcveloped to simulate the dispersion from an elevated emission source. The proposed model did not require any empirical formula or data for the turbulent statistics such as velocity variances and Lagrangian time scales since the turbulence properties for LPDM were calculated from results of the flow model. The LPDM was validated by comparing the model results against the wind tunnel tracer experiment and ISCST3 model. The calculated wind profile and turbulent velocity variances were in good agreement with those measured in the wind tunnel. The ground level concentrations along the plume centerline as well as the dispersion codfficients also showed good agreement in comparison with the wind tunnel tracer experiment. There were some discrepancies on the horizontal spread of the plume in comparison with the ISCST3 but the maximum ground level concentrations were in a good confidence range. The results of comparisons suggested that the proposed LPDM with the flow model was an effective tool to simulate the dispersion in the flow situation where the turbulent characteristics were not available in advance.

Influence of Illumination on Domain Switching and Photovoltaic Current in Poled $(Pb_{1x}La_x)TiO_3$ Freeoelectric Ceramics

  • The influence of photoexcited nonequilibrium carriers on domain switching and photovoltaic current was investigated in two kinds of poled La-modified PbTiO$_3$ferroelectric ceramics, (Pb$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)TiO$_3$and (Pb$_{0.76}$La$_{0.24}$)TiO$_3$, under illumination in the absence of external electric field. Both photovoltaic current and cumulative AE event counts increased with illumination time. The observed nonsteady-state photovoltaic current could be explained on the basis of the cycles of a series of physical events consisting the establishment of space charge field by photoexcited carriers trapped at the grain boundaries, the photoinduced domain switching, and the increase in the remanent polarization. An analysis of energy distribution of the observed AE signals also revealed that the space charge field in (Pb$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)TiO$_3$allowed both 18$0^{\circ}C$ and 90$^{\circ}$domains to be switched during illumination.

  • Ferromagnetism in manganese compound semiconductors open prospects for tailoring magnetic and spin-related phenomena in semiconductors with a precision specific to III-V compounds. Also it addresses a question about the origin of the magnetic interactions that lead to a Curie temperature(Tc) as high as 110 K for a manganese concentration of just 5%. Zener's model of ferromagnetism, originally suggested for transition metals in 1950, can explain Tc of $Ga_{1-x}Mn_x$ As and that of its IT-VI counterpart $Zn_{1-x}Mn_x$ Te and is used to predict materials with Tc exceeding room temperature, an important step toward semiconductor electronics that use both charge and spin. In this article, we present not only the experimental result but calculated Curie temperature by RKKY interaction. The problem in making III-V semiconductor has been the low solubility of magnetic elements, such as manganese, in the compound, since the magnetic effects are roughly proportional to the concentration of the magnetic ions. Low solubility of magnetic elements was overcome by low-temperature nonequilibrium MBE{molecular beam epitaxy) growth, and ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As was realized. Magnetotransport measurements revealed that the magnetic transition temperature can be as high as 110 K for a small manganese concentration.

대기압 비평형 플라스마의 발생 및 규소(Si)식각에의 응용 (Generation of Low Temperature Plasma at Atmospheric Pressure and its Application to Si Etching in Open Air)

  • 대기압 하에서 정상적으로 저온 플라스마가 발생 가능한 장치를 개발했다. 개발한 장치는 접지전극을 유전체로 피복한 용량결합형 전극구조로 되어 있다. rf(13.56 M Hz)을 여기 원으로서 사용한 아르곤(Ar) 또는 헬륨(He)은 플라스마 가스로서 사용했다. 발생한 플라스마는 발광분광법, 플로브 진단법에 의해 특성을 검토했다. 그 결과 전자온도>여기온도>가스온도 관계에 있는 비평형 상태의 플라스마였다. 본 장치를 사용하여 발생한 플라스마에 반응가스(CF4)을 첨가해서 대기 개방 계에서 Si(100)식각($1.5{\mu}m$/min)에 적용하여 높은 처리속도를 실현했다.

  • In this paper, we formed the shallow junction by preamorphization and low energy ion implantation. And a simulator is designed for predicting the annealing process results. Especially, if considered the applicable to single step annealing process(RTA, FA) and dual step annealing process(RTA+FA, FA+RTA). In this simulation, the ion implantation model and the boron diffusion model are used. The Monte Carlo model is used for the ion implantation. Boron diffusion model is based on pair diffusion at nonequilibrium condition. And we considered that the BI-pairs lead the diffusion and the boron activation and clustering reaction. Using the boundary condition and initial condition, the diffusion equation is solved successfully. The simulator is made ofC language and reappear the experimental data successfully.

비선형 $k-{\epsilon}$ 난류모델에 의한 원추형 디퓨저 유동해석 (Numerical Simulation of a Conical Diffuser Using the Nonlinear $k-{\epsilon}$ Turbulence Model)

  • A diffuser, an important equipment to change kinetic energy into pressure energy, has been studied for a long time. Though experimental and theoretical researches have been done, the understanding of energy transfer and detailed mechanism of energy dissipation is unclear. As far as numerical prediction of diffuser flows are concerned, various numerical studies have also been done. On the contrary, many turbulence models have constraint to the applicability of diffuser-like complex flows, because of anisotropy of turbulence near the wall and of local nonequilibrium induced by an adverse pressure gradient. The existing $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence models have some problems in the case of being applied to complex turbulent flows. The purpose of this paper is to test the applicability of the nonlinear $k-{\epsilon}$ model concerning diffuser-like flows with expansion and streamline curvature. The results show that the nonlinear $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model predicted well the coefficient of pressure, velocity profiles and turbulent kinetic energy distributions, however the shear stress prediction was failed.
