  • Purpose: Cheese texture is an important sensory attribute mainly considered for consumers' acceptance. The feasibility of nondestructive measurements of cheese texture was explored using non-contact ultrasonic sensors. Methods: A novel non-contact air instability compensation ultrasonic technique was used for five varieties of hard cheeses to measure ultrasonic parameters, such as velocity and attenuation coefficient. Five texture properties, such as fracturability, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, and chewiness were assessed by a texture profile analysis (TPA) and correlated with the ultrasonic parameters. Results: Texture properties of five varieties of hard cheese were estimated using ultrasonic parameters with regression analysis models. The most effective model predicted the fracturability, hardness, springiness, and chewiness, with the determination coefficients of 0.946 (RMSE = 21.82 N), 0.944 (RMSE = 63.46 N), 0.797 (RMSE = 0.06 ratio), and 0.833 (RMSE = 17.49 N), respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the non-contact air instability compensation ultrasonic sensing technique can be an effective tool for rapid and non-destructive determination of cheese texture.

  • Purpose: This study reviewed the major nondestructive measurement techniques used to assess internal properties of agricultural materials that significantly influence the quality, safety, and value of the products in markets. Methods: Imaging technologies are powerful nondestructive analytical tools that possess specific advantages in revealing the internal properties of products. Results: This review was exploring the application of various imaging techniques, specifically, hyperspectral imaging (HSI), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), soft X-ray, X-ray computed tomography (XRI-CT), thermal imaging (TI), and ultrasound imaging (UI), to investigate the internal properties of agricultural commodities. Conclusions: The basic instruments used in these techniques are discussed in the initial part of the review. In the context of an investigation of the internal properties of agricultural products, including crops, fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat, fish, and seeds, various extant studies are examined to understand the potential of these imaging technologies. Future trends for these imaging techniques are also presented.

  • This contribution contained the classical work of an open-hole tensile plate to demonstrate the performance of grating shearography and to compare with the results obtained by other full-field measurement techniques, The isotropic plate with an open-hole has often appeared in the previous contributions introducing novel full-field method and system. Grating shearography directly provided six quantitative measurands about the specimen's surface kinematics by using a single measurement set: three in-plane strains, in plane rotation, and two out-of-plane slopes. The quasi-plane wavefront of grating metrology led to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and thus neither fitting nor filtering was applied, and the small shearing distance of $101{\mu}m$ could be used. The small shearing distance provided the outstanding spatial resolution of $80{\mu}m$ and sensitivity appropriate for experimental mechanics. Finally, the grating shearography enabled the visualization of the complex surface deformation around the hole and also detected parasitic flexions of the specimen in the micrometer regime during the tensile test.

  • Multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method has exhibited broad application prospects in the nondestructive detection of interfacial debonding in steel-concrete composite structures (SCCS). However, due to the structural diversity of SCCS and the high stealthiness of interfacial debonding defects, the feasibility of MASW method needs to be investigated in depth. In this study, synthetic parametric study on MASW nondestructive debonding detection for SCCSs is performed. The aim is to quantitatively analyze influential factors with respect to structural composition of SCCS and MASW measurement mode. First, stress wave composition and propagation process in SCCS are studied utilizing 2D numerical simulation. For structural composition in SCCS, the thickness variation of steel plate, concrete core, and debonding defects are discussed. To determine the most appropriate sensor arrangement for MASW measurement, the effects of spacing and number of observation points, along with distances between excitation points, nearest boundary, as well as the first observation point, are analyzed individually. The influence of signal type and frequency of transient excitation on dispersion figures from forwarding analysis is studied to determine the most suitable excitation signal. The findings from this study can provide important theoretical guidance for MASW-based interfacial debonding detection for SCCS. Furthermore, they can be instrumental in optimizing both the sensor layout design and signal choice for experimental validation.

  • The ultrasonical characteristics of inclined planar reflectors is investigated by the maximum amplitude method. The reflected ultrasound is varied by the reflector size, shape, inclination and using transducers. It was found that the detecting ability for planar reflectors was decreased with increasing transducer size and misorientation angle and increased with decreasing ultrasonic frequency, also the misorientation angle of planar reflectors affected significantly for the measurement of refklector size.

  • Recently, there are many fields have been required for the precision measurements, as an advanced example of which, a precise change of inner structure during the hydration process of mortar was observed by ultrasonic and dielectric measurements. The results show that it is possible to determine the safety of mortar and mixing ratio, and strength growth and shrinkage rate by heat evolution.

  • This work presents a simple technique to determine the Poisson's ratio of homogeneous solid material using a pair of low cost PVDF ultrasonic transducers. It is based on transducer's property of generating longitudinal and transversal waves depending on the excitation frequency. Mechanical tests were conducted to validate the proposed method, resulting in a good agreement between ultrasonic and mechanical techniques.

  • In this study the bonding quality evaluation of FRP honeycomb structure was performed by the ultrasonic C-Scan method and stress wave factor measurements. These NDT techniques could be well applied to the disbonding detection of FRP honeycomb structures. Especially, stress wave factor (SWF) measurement is expected to be a useful technique in field applications.

  • In this paper, the p-n junction depth with nondestructive method by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is determined and conformed. By measuring the critical short circuit current on the p-n junction which induced by electron beam and calculating generation range, the diffusion depth can be obtained. It can be seen that values destructively measured by constant angle lapping and nondestructively by this study almost concur. As this result, it is purposed that diffusion depth of p-n junction can be easily measured by nondestruction. This nondestructive method can be recommended highly to the industrial analysis.
