  • Characterizing the electromagnetic properties of concrete is essential to the enhancement of accuracy and reliability in nondestructive testing of concrete structures using electromagnetic techniques. To establish a data base for the properties of concrete, a measurement technique has been developed and a set of data has been obtained for the frequency range of 1~6 GHz. As moisture content is one of major contributing factors to determine permittivity of dielectric material, moisture content is varied during the measurement. An application of a measurement system which consists of open-ended coaxial probe and automatic network analyzer to concrete and mortar specimens is studied. For this, calibration techniques, size of specimens, and number of measurements necessary to obtain reliable data are investigated. From the measured data, it is shown that moisture content plays an important role to determine the permittivity of specimens. As the moisture content increases. The permittivity of specimens show tendency to approach the permittivity of water.

  • The present paper reviews the micro and nano nondestructive evaluation(NDE) technique that is possible to investigate the surface and measure the acoustic properties. The technical theory, features and applications of the ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(UAFM) and scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) are illustrated. Especially, these technologies are possible to evaluate the mechanical properties in micro/nano structure and surface through the measurement of acoustic properties in addition to the observation of surface and subsurface. Consequently, it is thought that technique developments and applications of these micro/nano NDE in advanced industrial parts together with present nondestructive industry are widely possible hereafter.

  • Welding residual stress was measured by ultrasonic birefringence technique. Acoustoelastic constant was taken by averaging the values in the literature. The initial birefringence from prefered orientation of grains was measured. The EMAT transducers were used to remove couplant effect. The results show that the distribution and magnitude of welding residual stress from ultrasonic measurement are in good agreements with those from semi destructive hole drilling measurement.

  • The velocity and amplitude of microwaves are affected by the electromagnetic properties of a material through which the wave propagates. And the electromagnetic properties of a dielectric material such as concrete is represented by its permittivity. For the development of an accurate and reliable nondestructive testing (NDT) technique for concrete structures using microwave, it is necessary to have knowledge about the permittivity of concrete. In this paper, mortar specimens are used to serve as a basis for further measurement of concrete. The effect of water on the permittivity was studied using specimens with different water content. To assure the reliability of the measurement results, a statistical method was introduced.

  • In this paper, we present an ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurement system. There are many ultrasonic measurement methods that are used in nondestructive testing applications. They include material property determination, microstructural characterization, and flaw detection. Ultrasonic parameters such as velocity and attenuation are most commonly used in them. Advanced signal analysis which is called "ime-frequency analysis"has been used widely in nondestructive evaluation applications. Wavelet transform is the most advanced technique for processing signals with time-varying spectra. Using the echo waveform gathered by the designed hardware system, we performed simulation of the signal processing algorithms. Then the algorithm is implemented on the system.

  • Poisson's ratio, one of elastic constants of elastic solids, has not attracted attention due to its narrow range and difficult measurement. Transverse wave velocity as well as longitudinal wave velocity should be measured for nondestructive measurement of Poisson's ratio. Rigid couplants for transverse wave is one of obstacle for scanning over specimen. In the present work, a novel measurement of Poisson's ratio distribution was applied. Immersion method was employed for the scanning over the specimen. Echo signals of normal beam longitudinal wave were collected, and transverse wave modes generated by mode conversion were identified. From transit time of longitudinal and transverse waves, Poisson's ratio was determined without the information of specimen thickness. Poisson's ratio distribution of the carbon steel weldment was mapped. Heat affected zone of the weldment was clearly distinguished from base and filler metals.

  • Poisson's ratio is one of elastic constants of elastic solids. However, it has not attracted attention due to its narrow range and difficult measurement. Transverse wave velocity as well as longitudinal wave velocity should be measured for nondestructive measurement of Poisson's ratio. Hard couplant for transverse wave prevents transducer from scanning over specimen. In the present work, a novel measurement of Poisson's ratio distribution was proposed. Immersion method was employed for the scanning over the specimen. Echo signals of normal beam longitudinal wave were collected. Transverse wave modes generated by mode conversion were identified. From transit time of longitudinal and transverse waves, Poisson's ratio can be determined without information of specimen thickness. This technique was demonstrated for aluminum and steel specimens.
