The effects of severe plastic deformation, equal channel angular pressing, and annealing of Al 5052 alloy on elastic modulus have been studied. The AI 5052 alloy was plastically deformed by ECAP method after solution treatment, and then finally annealing heat treated. Elastic modulus was measured by conventional tensile and nano-indentation test, and also measured on the surface of the specimen using acoustic material signature of the acoustic microscope. The variation in the elastic modulus influenced by plastic deformation and heat treatment, inaccessible by the conventional techniques, was successfully measured by acoustic material signature and obtained the elastic modulus depending on crystal orientation at each grain.

Breast and prostate tumors or cancers tend to be stiffer than the surrounding normal tissue. However, the difference in echogenicity between cancerous and normal tissues is not clearly distinguishable in ultrasound B-mode imaging. Thus, imaging the stiffness contrast between the two different tissue types helps to diagnose lesions quantitatively, and such a method of imaging the elasticity of human tissue is termed ultrasound elasticity imaging. Recently, elasticity imaging has become an effective complementary diagnostic modality along with ultrasound B-mode imaging. This paper presents various elasticity imaging methods that have been reported up to now and describes their characteristics and principles of operation.
In this article, Multi-Gene Genetic Programming (MGGP) is proposed for the estimation of the compressive strength of concrete. MGGP is known to be a powerful algorithm able to find a relationship between certain input space features and a desired output vector. With respect to most conventional machine learning algorithms, which are often used as "black boxes" that do not provide a mathematical formulation of the output-input relationship, MGGP is able to identify a closed-form formula for the input-output relationship. In the study presented in this article, MGPP was used to predict the compressive strength of plain concrete, concrete with fly ash, and concrete with furnace slag. A formula was extracted for each mixture and the performance and the accuracy of the predictions were compared to the results of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) algorithms, which are conventional and well-established machine learning techniques. The results of the study showed that MGGP can achieve a desirable performance, as the coefficients of determination for plain concrete, concrete with ash, and concrete with slag from the testing phase were equal to 0.928, 0.906, 0.890, respectively. In addition, it was found that MGGP outperforms ELM in all cases and its' accuracy is slightly less than ANN's accuracy. However, MGGP models are practical and easy-to-use since they extract closed-form formulas that may be implemented and used for the prediction of compressive strength.
Gravel is commonly employed to enhance the bearing capacity of foundations and provide stable support for structures. However, effectively assessing the ground characteristics in the presence of gravel poses significant challenges. This study aims to compare the resolution of ground containing gravel using electrical resistivity, elastic wave surveys, and ground penetration radar (GPR). Nondestructive methods are applied at construction sites where soil improvement is carried out using gravel. The experiments focus on shallow depths, and the obtained results cover depths up to 2 m. Both the electrical resistivity and elastic wave techniques exhibit similar behavior in their findings, indicating comparable outcomes. However, GPR has limitations in observing the characteristics of ground with gravel. Dynamic cone-penetration tests were conducted to validate these findings. The electrical resistivity and elastic wave profiles exhibited similar behaviors in localized areas, further supporting their compatibility and reliability.
In this study, the feasibility of magnetic resonance techniques for nondestructive internal quality evaluation of Korean red ginseng was examined. Relaxation time constants were measured using various grades of red ginsengs. Solid state magnetic resonance imaging technique was applied to image dried red ginsengs which have low moisture contents (about 13%). A 7 tesla magnetic resonance imaging system operating at a proton resonant frequency of 300 ㎒ was used for acquiring MR images of dried Korean red ginseng. The comparison test of cross cut digital images and magnetic resonance images of heaven grade, good grade with cavity inside, and good grade with white part inside red ginseng suggested the feasibility of the internal quality evaluation of Korean red ginsengs using MRI techniques. A good grade red ginseng included abnormal tissues such as cavities or white parts inside was observed by the signal intensity of MR image based on magnetic resonance properties of proton nucleus. Analysis on an one dimensional profile of acquired MR image of Korean red ginseng showed easy discrimination of normal and abnormal tissues. MR techniques suggested ways to detect internal defects of red ginsengs effectively.
In this research, an experimental study is presented to check the possibilities of offshore structures monitoring using AE techniques. The underwater transducer and preamplifier are fabricated. And, it is proved that this unit can be used for the detection of AE in offshore structures. Wave propagation studies have shown that supplementary attenuations due to seawater are significantly reducing the detection range of the sensors. It excludes the possibility of offshore structures monitoring with a small number of sensors. We conclude that AE waves would be correctly detected for a path of about 3m. Tubular joints have been tested in air and underwater using simulated elastic wave. Ability of AE techniques to detect and locate cracks early in their evolution has been demonstrated. Several parameters of AE generation have been set in evidence. It has also been shown that crack development goes with an increase of AE parameter. Conclusively, it is shown that AE techniques can provide practical alternatives to present methods being used for inspection of deep-water offshore structures undergoing structural degradation due to fatigue crack growth.

This paper describes the analysis results of a series f Round-Robin test that was performed to intercompare inspection and diagnosis techniques for characterization of pressure tube f a pressurized heavy water reactor under the Coordinated Research Project(CRP) of IAEA's nuclear Power Programme. For this test, six nations, Korea, Canada, India, Argentina, Rumania, and China that currently have pressurized heavy water reactors under operation involved, and the "KOR-1" pressure tube sample prepared by Korea was used. Two kinds of NDE technique, ultrasonic and eddy current test, were applied for these tests. The "KOR-1" pressure tube sample contains total 12 artificial flaws such as crack-like EDM notches, wear that is similar to the real flaws and can be produced on the pressure tubes during plant operation. Test results showed that seven laboratories from six nations detected all twelve flaws in "KOR-1" specimen by using ultrasonic and eddy current test methods, and ultrasonic test method was more accurate than eddy current test method in flaw detectin and sizing. ID flaws in pressure tube sample were more easily detected and accurately sized than OD flaws.

The rivet joint has typical structural feature that can be initiation site for the fatigue crack due to the combination of local stress concentration around rivet hole and the moisture trapping. From a viewpoint of structural assurance, it is crucial to evaluate the size of crack around the rivet holes by appropriate nondestructive evaluation techniques. Lamb wave that is one of guided waves, offers a more efficient tool for nondestructive inspection of plates. The neural network that is considered to be the most suitable for pattern recognition has been used by researchers in NDE field to classify different types of flaws and flaw sizes. In this study, clack size evaluation around the rivet hole using the neural network based on the back-propagation algorithm has been tarried out by extracting some features from the ultrasonic Lamb wave for A12024-T3 skin panel of aircraft. Special attention was paid to reduce the coupling effect between the transducer and the specimen by extracting some features related to time md frequency component data in ultrasonic waveform. It was demonstrated clearly that features extracted from the time and frequency domain data of Lamb wave signal were very useful to determine crack size initiated from rivet hole through neural network.
The methodology to visualize the shape of blood vessel and its blood flow have been attracting as a very interesting problem to forecast and examinate a disease in thrombus precursor protein. May previous visualization researches have been appeared for designing the blood vessel and also modeling the blood flow using a doppler imaging technique which is one of nondestructive testing techniques. General visualization methods are to depict the blood flow obtained from doppler effects with fragmentary stream lines and also visualize the blood flow model using volume rendering. However, these visualizeation techniques have the disadvantage which a set of small line segments does not give the overall observation of blood flows. Therefore, we propose a visualization system which reconstruct the continuity of the blood flow obtained from doppler effects and also visualize the blood flow with the vector field of blood particles. This system will use doppler phase difference from medical equipments such as OCT with low penetration and reconstruct the blood flow by the curvature estimation from vector field of each blood particle.
Recently, many techniques have been developed for the inspection of pipelines using guided waves. However, few researches have been made on the application of those techniques for buried underground pipes. Guided wave motions in the buried pipes are somewhat different from those of on-ground pipes which have traction-free (air) boundary condition on outer pipe walls and thus are strongly affected by the mechanical property of the surrounding soils. Therefore, it should be investigated the effect of soil properties on the guided wave behavior in buried pipe. On the other hand, the mechanical property of soil is largely depending on its moisture conditions nevertheless of other influential factors such as void ratio. In this study, the effect of moisture conditions in soils on mode attenuation of guided waves in the buried pipe is investigated. To this end, numerical study is performed to characterize mode attenuation behavior in buried pipes and the effective mode which is suitable for long range inspection is identified.
