  • A rectifying inspection plan is considered for the case of destructive testing. Screening inspection for rejected lots is performed by some nondestructive testing which is prone to misclassification errors. Apparent defectives found in the screening process is replaced with apparent good items. The plan provides LTPD protection on each individual lot while the sum of the cost of testing and the cost due to producer's risk at process average quality is minimized. A brief discussion on average outgoing quality is also given.

  • The strategies of maintenance and operation are usually established based on the number of flaws and their size distribution obtained from nondestructive inspection in order to preserve safety of the plant. But non destructive inspection results are different from the physical flaws which really exist in the equipments. In case of a single inspection, it is easy to estimate the number of physical flaws using the POD curve. However, we may be faced with some difficulties in obtaining the number of physical flaws from the periodic in-service non destructive inspection data. In this study a simple method for estimating the number of physical flaws from periodic in-service nondestructive inspection data was proposed. In order to obtain the flaw growth history, the flaw growth was simulated using the Monte Carlo method and the flaw size and the corresponding POD value were obtained for each flaw at each periodic inspection time. The flaw growth rate used in the simulation was statistically calculated from the in-service inspection data. By repeating the simulation numerous flaw growth data could be generated and the effective POD curve was obtained as a function of flaw size. From the effective POD curve the number of physical flaws was obtained. The usefulness and convenience of the proposed method was evaluated from several applications and satisfactory results were obtained.

  • The open-connect type eddy current transducer for the flaw detection in continuously connected pipelines was developed. This eddy current transducer is for the on-line inspection of the tubes in industries, to which commercial encircling probes are not applicable. The excitation coil that consists of a ribbon type cable and a flat connector can be opened and closed on purpose. The sensing coils of this transducer are circumferentially arrayed near the outside of the tube wall but axially displaced from the exciter by about one and half tube diameter. In application to steel tubes, and the performance of this transducer was evaluated as a little behind those of magnetic saturation type in signal to noise ratio and flaw size decision, but usable to detect or to locate large size flaws in steel tubes. Surface cracks deeper than 19% of the tube thickness could be detected with good signal to noise ratio.

  • This study made member specimen for taking specimen, core with the concrete mixing normal concrete, admixture and conducted the same air curing as field conditions. After performing destructive and nondestructive test by age, estimate expression was suggested by analyzing correlations between compressive strength, rebound number and ultrasonic pulse velocity and the results are as follows. As a result of comparing error rate of existing expressions and this estimation expression, error rate of this estimation is reduced compared to existing expressions and has higher reliability. When conventional concrete expression is applied to admixture concrete, error rate occurs and then this study suggests the estimation expressions depending on types of admixture concrete.

  • Conventional film radiographic test has been generally and widely used in the inspection on the weldment for quality assurance. On the other hand, since the analog RT is well known for typical time and cost consuming method with complex process of inspection, the industry has researched various ways how to improve radiographic test technology. In this study, we verified the fact that digital RT provides a lot more benefit in effectively detecting defects, ever film details, through digital processing of image enhancement, compared to film RT. As a result, we reached conclusion that digital RT is positively able to replace the film RT in industry in part or in whole.

  • Recently, wave propagation imaging based on laser scanning-generated elastic waves has been intensively used for nondestructive inspection. However, the proficiency of the conventional software based system reduces when the scan area is large since the processing time increases significantly due to unavoidable processor multitasking, where computing resources are shared with multiple processes. Hence, the field programmable gate array (FPGA) was introduced for a wave propagation imaging method in order to obtain extreme processing time reduction. An FPGA board was used for the design, implementing post-processing ultrasonic wave propagation imaging (UWPI). The results were compared with the conventional system and considerable improvement was observed, with at least 78% (scanning of $100{\times}100mm^2$ with 0.5 mm interval) to 87.5% (scanning of $200{\times}200mm^2$ with 0.5 mm interval) less processing time, strengthening the claim for the research. This new concept to implement FPGA technology into the UPI system will act as a break-through technology for full-scale automatic inspection.

  • The safety-evaluation of ancient wood structures has been executed with only visual inspection. The application of NDE(nondestructive evaluation) is required because the visual inspection has many restrictions. Among many NDE techniques, the stress wave technique was used in this research. This study focused on evaluating the extent of decay in members of ancient structures, using stress wave nondestructive technique. For application of stress wave technique to ancient structures, the threshold time which divides members into categories according to degree of decay should be determined in advance. Stress wave timer (Metriguard Model 239A) was used in this study, specimens used in this research were the members obtained from six ancient structures. All specimens were identified as Hard Pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z. or Pinus thunbergii P.) by microscope. Each member was tested with stress wave passing radially through the pith. In this study, the stress wave time of $12{\mu}s$/cm could distinguish between sound and decayed specimens with accuracy of 77.5 percent. Also, decayed specimens could be separated into moderate and severe categories by stress wave time of $20{\mu}s$/cm. Among the three decay location groups (exterior, mixed, interior), the exterior group could be classified into sound, moderate and severe decay with the greatest accuracy. Stress wave transit time was not sensitive to small decay pockets located in interior of the member.

  • Eddy current testing is widely used for inspecting steam generator tubing in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The inspection technique for steam generator tubing in NPPs should be qualified in accordance with examination guidelines. When the components of a qualified system such as eddy current tester, probe, and data analysis program, are changed, the equivalency of the modified system to the originally qualified system must be verified. The eddy current tester is the most important part of an eddy current testing system because it excites and transmits alternating currents to the probe, receives coil impedance of the probe and generates signals for anomalies. The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) developed an eddy current testing system with an eddy current tester and data acquisition-analysis program for inspecting the steam generator tubing in NPPs; this system can be used for an array probe and as a bobbin and rotating probes. The equivalency assessment for the currently developed system was carried out, and we describe the results in this paper.

  • Concrete micro-cracks that are grown while the structures are under construction or in service, propagate gradually or rapidly by external forces and environmental effects. As described above, almost concrete structures generally have cracks, so for the safety and durability of structures, studies to detect cracks using nondestructive tests have been treated in great deal. The purpose of this study is to evaluate characteristics of AE signals detected from notched concrete beams bending test with different loading using one of nondestructive test, Acoustic Emission (AE) method. Furthermore this study predicts the location of initial crack and measures direction of crack propagation for on-line monitoring before the crack really grows in structures by using two-dimensional AE source location based on rectangular method with three-point bending test. This will allow efficient maintenance of concrete structures through monitoring of internal cracking based on acoustic emission method.
