Simultaneous Measurement of Ultrasonic Velocity and Thickness of Isotropic and Homogeneous Solids Using Two Transducers (두개의 탐촉자를 사용한 등방성 균일 고체의 초음파 속도 및 두께 동시 측정법)

  • Ultrasonic pulse-echo methods measuring the transit time through specimens have been widely used in determination of ultrasonic velocity and thickness of specimens. Usually, to determine the velocity of the ultrasonic. the transit time of the ultrasonic pulse through specimen is measured by using the ultrasonic measuring equipment such as the oscilloscope including ultrasonic pulser/receiver and the thickness of the specimen is measured by using the length measuring instrument such as micrometer or vernier calipers etc., i. e. each parameter is measured by using each measuring method. In the case of the measuring the thickness of a specimen by using the ultrasonics. the ultrasonic equipments, which measure the thickness, such as the ultrasonic thickness gauge must be calibrated by using the reference block of which the ultrasonic velocity is known beforehand. In the present work, we proposed a new method for simultaneous measurement of ultrasonic velocity and thickness without reference blocks. Experimental results for several specimens show that proposed method have good agreements with those by traditional ultrasonic method.

Feasibility Study of Remote Field Eddy Current Testing for Nonmagnetic Steam Generator Tubes (비자성 증기발생기 전열관의 원격장와전류 탐상 가능성 연구)

  • As steam generator (SG) tubes have aged, new and subtle flaws have appeared. Most of them start growing from outside the tubes. Since signals from outer diameter (OD) defects are very weak compared to those from inner diameter (ID) defects in the conventional eddy current testing due to skin effect, this paper studies the feasibility of using remote field eddy current (RFEC) technique, which has shown equal sensitivity to ID and OD defects in the ferromagnetic pipe inspection. Finite element modeling studies show that the operating frequency needs to be increased up to a few hundred kHz in order for RFEC effects to occur in the nonmagnetic SG tube. The proper distance between exciter and sensor coils is also found to be about 1.5 OD, which is half the distance used in the ferromagnetic pipe inspection. Defect signals obtained by the designed RFEC probe show equal sensitivity to ID and OD defects and the existence of linear relationship between defect depth and phase signal strength. These results tell us that RFEC inspection is feasible even in nonmagnetic steam generator tubes.

  • This study is concentrated on the development of high speed multi-object image processing algorithm in real time. Recently, the use of vision system is rapidly increasing in inspection and robot's position control. To apply the vision system, it is necessary to transform the physical coordinate of object into the image information acquired by CCD camera. Thus, to use the application of the vision system to the inspection and robot's position control in real time, we have to know the position of object in the image plane. Particularly, in case of rigid body using multi-cue to identify its shape, the each position of multi-cue must be calculated in an image plane at the same time. To solve these problems, the image processing algorithm on the position of multi-cue is developed.

  • In order to detect the internal defects which occur in welding parts of pressure vessel and structures, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing is applied. However, because of the risks of radiation exposure and film processing, radiographic testing takes a relatively long time to verify the test results and it has affected in the production process. Typically, the manual ultrasonic testing is not easy to reproduce the result and it is highly dependent on the tester's skills. The TOFD technique, one of the automatic ultrasonic testings is spreading alternatively. This research describes the comparing test results by applying radiographic testing and TOFD technique to a mock-up specimen incruding the flaws. The TOFD technique will contribute to improve the objective reliability of the ultrasonic technique.

  • A laser ultrasonic inspection system is a non-contact inspection device which generates and measures ultrasonics by using laser beam. A laser ultrasonic inspection system provides a high measurement resolution because the ultrasonic signal generated by a pulse laser beam has a wide-band spectrum and the ultrasonic signal is measured from a small focused spot of a measuring laser beam. In this study, galvanic corrosion phenomenon was measured by non-destructive and non-contact method using the laser. The case of mixed foreign material on the part of corrosion was assumed and laser ultrasonic experiment was conducted. Ultrasonic was generated by pulse laser from the back side of the specimen and ultrasonic signal was acquired from the same location of the front side using continuous wave laser and Confocal Fabry-Perot Interferometer(CFPI). The characteristic of the ultrasonic signal of exist foreign material part was analyzed and the location and size of foreign material was measured.

Guided Wave Mode Selection and Flaw Detection for Long Range Inspection of Polyethylene Coated Steel Gas Pipes (폴리에틸렌 코팅 가스배관의 광범위탐상을 위한 유도초음파 모드 선정 및 결함 검출)

  • Ultrasonic guided waves were explored to apply them to the long range inspection of polyethylene coated steel gas pipes. The steel pipes have such dimensions as 190.7mm inside diameter and 5.3mm thickness. The outside surface of the pipe is coated by a polyethylene layer of $1.9{\pm}0.5mm$ thickness. Non-axisymmetric guided waves were excited on the outside surface of the polyethylene coated pipe by using a 0.5MHz transducer with a variable angle shoe. Frequency and phase velocity tuning was used to find optimum guided wave modes for the inspection. The dispersive characteristics of the modes were analyzed in time-frequency representation obtained by short time Fourier transforms. Sample results were presented for artificial defects such as wall thinning and hole.

  • Flow accelerated corrosion(FAC) of carbon steel pipes in nuclear power plants has been known as one of the major degradation mechanisms. It could have bad influence on the plant reliability and safety. Also detection of FAC is a significant cost to the nuclear power plant because of the need to remove and replace insulation. Recently, the interest of the guided wave testing(GWT) has grown because it allows long range inspection without removing insulation of the pipe except at the probe position. If GWT can be applied to detection of FAC damages, it will can significantly reduce the cost for the inspection of the pipes. The objective of this study was to determine the capability of GWT to identify location of FAC damages. In this paper, three kinds of techniques were used to measure the amplitude ratio between the first and the second welds at the elbow area of mock-ups that contain real FAC damages. As a result, optimal inspection technique and minimum detectability to detect FAC damages drew a conclusion.

A Study on the Size Evaluation of Circular Flat Flaw with Indication by Straight Beam Inspection of Ultrasonic Wave (초음파(超音波)의 수직탐상법(垂直探傷法)에 의한 경사(傾斜)를 갖는 원형평면결함(圓形平面缺陷)의 크기 평가(評價)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • In the straight beam inspection of ultrasonic wave, the method for evaluating flaw size by AVG diagram is useful as a method for the quantitative evaluation of results of ultrasonic flaw detection. This study was carried out the measure the size of circular flat flaw with the inclination by straight beam inspection and could be decreased the error of application due to the inclination of flaw by AVG diagram in consideration of correction coefficient. From the result of the experiment, the error by means of the application of experimental values to AVG diagram was increased as the inclination angle grows. Also, it n s increased the error of application as the detecting frequency and diameter of flaw grows in the same inclination angle. In case of diameter of flaw 6mm, AVG diagram could be applied to the inclination angle $3^{\circ}$ for 5 MHz, $7^{\circ}$ for 2.25 MHz, $15^{\circ}C$ for 1 MHz in the range of 20% error and the theory was concided with the experiment to $5^{\circ}C$ for 5 MHz, $10^{\circ}C$ for 2.25 MHz, $15^{\circ}C$ for 1 MHz in the range of 10% error by correction eq. (45) due to the inclination angle. Therefore, it is considered that the results obtained from this study will be somewhat helpful informations for the size evaluation of circular flat flaw with the inclination.

Corrosion Assessment of Storage Tank Floor using Magnetic Flux Leakage Technique (누설자속법을 이용한 저장탱크 바닥판재의 부식 평가)

  • In this research, MFL technique has been studied for the inspection of storage tank floor. The reference specimens having 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% slot's are fabricated using the carbon steel plates of a 6mm and 10mm thick. Powerful permanent magnets and Hall effect sensors are used to this application. It is shown that our system is able to detect metal loss like a slot. Also, it is possible that slot diameter is measured using transverse type of Hall generator. It is demonstrated that MFL can not differentiate between the response from top side and bottom side slot. Flux leakage response from a bottom side indication is significantly lower in amplitude than that from an equivalent top side slot. It is essential to know this sensor lift-off distance because the MFL signal also changes considerably with the sensor lift-off distance.

Development of Eddy Current Test Probe for Profilometry Inspection of Tube (원형튜브 단면형상검사용 와전류탐촉자 개발)

  • An eddy current probe ($8{\times}1$ multiple-element, surface scan) was successfully designed and fabricated at the KEPRI using the impedance equivalent circuit theory. The probe is intended for the detection of circumferential deformations (cross-section view) of the heat exchanger tubing that can occur due to corrosion, erosion, and denting. Optimum design parameters providing the highest sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio, such as the coil dimensions, electrical characteristics, and test frequencies, were determined based on initial laboratory experiments conducted on the test specimen (SS304 tubing: OD : 9.68mm, wall-thickness : 0.47mm) containing artificial flaws (e.g., dents and corroded surface on tube OD) using the available Zetec-made probe. Using this parameters, a new probe was made and tested on an unknown specimen. The result indicated that the new probe is capable of detecting the circumferential deformation with the error of ${\pm}0.2%$ (0.022mm) of the tube O.D.
