Background: The increase in breast cancer awareness and widespread use of mammographic screening has led to an increased detection of (non-palpable) breast cancers that cannot be discovered through physical examination. One of the methods used in the diagnosis of these cancers is vacuum-assisted core biopsy, which prevents a considerable number of patients from undergoing surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to present the results of stereotactic vacuum-assisted core biopsy for suspicious breast lesions. Materials and Methods: Files were retrospectively scanned and data on demographic, radiological and pathological findings were recorded for patients who underwent stereotactic vacuum-assisted core biopsy due to suspicious mammographic findings at the Interventional Radiology Centre of the Florence Nightingale Hospital between January 2010, and April 2013. Statistical analysis was carried out using Pearson's Chi-square, continuity correction, and Fisher's exact tests. Results: The mean age of the patients was 47 years (range: 36-70). Biopsies were performed due to BIRADS 3 lesions in 8 patients, BIRADS 4 lesions in 77 patients, and BIRADS 5 lesions in 3 patients. Mammography elucidated clusters of microcalcifications in 73 patients (83%) and focal lesions (asymmetrical density, distortion) in 15 patients (17%). In terms of complications, 1 patient had a hematoma, and 2 patients had ecchymoses (3/88; 3.3%). The histopathologic results revealed benign lesions in 63 patients (71.6%) and malignant lesions in 25 patients (28.4%). The mean duration of the procedure was 37 minutes (range: 18-55). Although all of the BIRADS 3 lesions were benign, 22 (28.6%) of the BIRADS 4 lesions and all of the BIRADS 5 lesions were malignant. Among the malignant cases, 80% were in situ, and 20% were invasive carcinomas. These patients underwent surgery. Conclusions: In cases where non-palpable breast lesions are considered to be suspicious in mammography scans, the vacuum-assisted core biopsy method provides an accurate histopathologic diagnosis thus preventing a significant number of patients undergoing unnecessary surgical procedures.
Objective: Stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) is considered a reliable alternative to surgical biopsy for suspicious calcifications. In most cases, the management of flat epithelial atypia (FEA) and atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) after VABB with residual calcifications requires surgical excision. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pathology of non-calcified specimens on the underestimation of malignancy. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1147 consecutive cases of stereotactic VABB of suspicious calcifications without mass from January 2010 to December 2016 and identified 46 (4.0%) FEA and 52 (4.5%) ADH cases that were surgically excised for the retrieval of residual calcifications. Mammographic features and pathology of the calcified and non-calcified specimens were reviewed. Results: Seventeen specimens (17.3%) were upgraded to malignancy. Mammographic features associated with the underestimation of malignancy were calcification extent (> 34.5 mm: odds ratio = 6.059, p = 0.026). According to the pathology of calcified versus non-calcified specimens, four risk groups were identified: Group A (ADH vs. high-risk lesions), Group B (ADH vs. non-high-risk lesions), Group C (FEA vs. high-risk lesions), and Group D (FEA vs. non-high-risk lesions). The lowest underestimation rate was observed in Group D (Group A vs. Group B vs. Group C vs. Group D: 35.0% vs. 20.0% vs. 15.0% vs. 3.6%, p = 0.041, respectively). Conclusion: Considering that the calcification extent and pathology of non-calcified specimens may be beneficial in determining the likelihood of malignancy underestimation, excision after FEA or ADH diagnosis by VABB is required, except for the diagnoses of FEA coexisting without atypia lesions in non-calcified specimens.

In the last few decades, attention toward atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) has been greatly increased due to the numerous advantages of those applications, such as non-necessity of high vacuum facility, easy setup and operation, and low temperature operation. The practical applications of APP can be found in a wide spectrum of fields from the functionalization of material surfaces to sterilization of medical devices. In the secondary battery industry, separator film has been typically treated by APP to enhance adhesion strength between adjacent films. In this process, the plasma is required to have high stability and uniformity for better performance of the battery. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was usually adopted to limit overcurrent in the plasma, and we developed the pre-discharge technology to overcome the drawbacks of streamer discharge in the conventional DBD source which makes it possible to produce a super-stable plasma at atmospheric pressure. Simulations for the fluid flow and electric field were parametrically performed to find the optimized design for the linear jet plasma source. The developed plasma source (Plasmapp LJPS-200) exhibits spatial non-uniformity of less than 3%, and the adhesion strength between the separator and electrode films was observed to increase 17% by the plasma treatment.

We have fabricated the field emitter arrays coated with diamond-like carbon (DLC) films that improved the field emission characteristics. The nitrogen doped DLC films are prepared by the filtered cathodic vacuum are (FCVA) tehnique. The activation energy of the nitrogen doped DLC films are derived from electrical conductivity measurements. The silicon field emission arrays (FEAs) were prepared by the VLSI technique. The turn-on field was rapidly decreasing and the emission current was remarkably increasing the DLC-coated FEAs than the non-coated silicon FEAs. In the nitrogen doped FEAs, the turn-on field decreased and the emission current increased with increasing the nitrogen found out the field emission current and the work function of the DLC-coated FEAs was remarkably decreased than that of the non-coated silicon FEAs. As nitrogen doping concentrations are increased the work function of FEAs is decreased and the field emission properties are improved in nitrogen doped DLC-coated FEAs. This phenomenon in due the fact that the Fermi energy level moves to the conduction band by increasing nitrogen doping concentration.

KSTAR vacuum vessel has been boronized by carborane ($C_2B_{10}H_{12}$) to reduce various kinds of impurities including carbon and oxygen from the wall, since carborane is solid, non-toxic, non-explosive and is easily evaporated, while diborane ($B_2D_6$) is toxic and explosive. To find the best wall condition for the removal of contaminants before application to KSTAR, various amounts (0.3g, 0.5g, 1g) of carborane are tested in a test chamber, where filament discharge was generated in the mixture of helium and carborane with the same KSTAR target pressure (~ 5 mTorr) from base pressure (${\sim}10^-7\;Torr$). Discharge is performed by a pulse sequence mode with 3 second power on and 5 second power off. Deposited films of a-C/B:H are characterized by ellipsometery, AES and XPS, and are compared with those of KSTAR.
This study was conducted to evaluate the combined effect of gamma irradiation and different conditions (vacuum packaging, antioxidant and freezing) on the microbiological and sensory characteristics of freeze dried Manila clam porridge (MCP) for immuno-compromised patient food. MCP can be sterilized at 1 kGy to 10 kGy. The initial counts of total aerobic bacteria and yeast molds in the non-irradiated MCP were $2.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.2{\pm}0.3{\log}\;CFU\;g^{-1}$, respectively, but gamma irradiation significantly decreased the total aerobic bacteria to below the detection limit ($1{\log}\;CFU\;g^{-1}$) (5 kGy). Moreover, gamma irradiation effectively eliminated yeasts/molds at dose below than 1 kGy. However, gamma irradiation accelerated the increase of lipid oxidation and therefore, decreased the sensory characteristics of MCP as irradiation dose increased. To improve the sensory qualities of gamma irradiated MCP, combination treatment (vacuum packaging, 0.1% vitamin C) were applied. There was no significant difference in the overall acceptance scores between the combined-treatment sample (5.6 points) and the non-irradiated samples (6.0). The results indicate that combination treatment (vacuum packaging, 0.1% vitamin C) may help to maintain the quality of MCP. Therefore, it considered that irradiation of MCP with combined treatment and this is an effective method for the consumption as a special purpose food such as for space travel or immuno-compromised patients.
The study was carried out to examine combined effects of packaging and electron-beam irradiation on lipid oxidation and meat color of fermented sausages during storage. Fermented and aged sausages were exposed to electron-beam at 2 kGy. The samples were vacuum or aerobic-packaged with the non-irradiated samples at 4±1℃. Regardless of irradiation, the pH values of vacuum-packaged samples was lower than those of aerobic-packaged ones at 14 day (p<0.05). Total microbes and lactic acid bacteria counts significantly decreased during the storage period (p<0.05). And counts of non-irradiated samples were significantly higher than those of irradiated (2 kGy) samples with aerobic packaging. The TBARS values of 2 kGy-irradiated samples were significantly higher than those of non-irradiated samples. The TBARS values of vacuum packaged samples had lower than those of aerobic-packaged ones (p<0.05). Colors (parameters L*, a* and b* values) tended to decrease as the storage period increased. Redness(a*) and yellowness (b*) of 2 kGy irradiated samples were higher than those of non-irradiated ones (p<0.05). In sensory analysis, irradiated (2 kGy) samples with aerobic packaging had higher off-flavor than non-irradiated ones (p<0.05). Therefore, results indicated that irradiation coupled with vacuum packaging may minimize TBARS values of irradiated sausages during storage.
