This study expressed the reservoir's storage-discharge relation as a non-linear reservoir model and theoretically quantified the reservoir storage effect. Among those non-linear functions like exponential function, logarithmic function and power function considered, the exponential function of the storage-discharge relation was found to be the most valid. The non-linear reservoir model proposed was applied to the Chungju Dam and the Soyang River Dam, whose storage effects during flood were estimated to be about 23 hours and 43 hours, respectively. This result indicates that the Choongju Dam, even though its size and total storage volume are similar to those of the Soyang River Dam, does not achieve enough storage effect as its basin size and the inflow amount are much larger.

In the proposed paper numerical calculations are carried out using two versions of a three-dimensional, timedomain panel method developed by the group of Prof. P. Sclavounos at MIT, i.e. the linear code SWAN2, enabling optionally the use of the instantaneous non-linear Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces and the fully non-linear SWAN4. The analytical results are compared with experimental results for three hull forms with increasing geometrical complexity, the Series 60, a reefer vessel with stern bulb and a modern fast ROPAX hull form with hollow bottom in the stern region. The details of the geometrical modeling of the hull forms are discussed. In addition, since SWAN4 does not support transom sterns, only the two versions of SWAN2 were evaluated over experimental results for the parent hull form of the NTUA double-chine, wide-transom, high-speed monohull series. The effect of speed on the numerical predictions was investigated. It is concluded that both versions of SWAN2 the linear and the one with the non-linear Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces provide a more robust tool for prediction of the dynamic response of the vessels than the non-linear SWAN4 code. In general, their results are close to what was expected on the basis of experience. Furthermore, the use of the option of non-linear Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces is beneficial for the accuracy of the predictions. The content of the paper is based on the Diploma thesis of the second author, supervised by the first one and further refined by the third one.
Most of the existing seismic codes for RC buildings consider only a scenario earthquake for analysis, often characterized by the response spectrum at the specified location. However, any real earthquake event often involves occurrences of multiple earthquakes within a few hours or days, possessing similar or even higher energy than the first earthquake. This critically impairs the rehabilitation measures thereby resulting in the accumulation of structural damages for subsequent earthquakes after the first earthquake. Also, the existing seismic provisions account for the non-linear response of an RC building frame implicitly by specifying a constant response modification factor (R) in a linear elastic design. However, the 'R' specified does not address the changes in structural configurations of RC moment-resisting frames (RC MRFs) viz., building height, number of bays present, bay width, irregularities arising out of mass and stiffness changes, etc. resulting in changed dynamic characteristics of the structural system. Hence, there is an imperative need to assess the seismic performance under sequential earthquake ground motions, considering the adequacy of code-specified 'R' in the representation of dynamic characteristics of RC buildings. Therefore, the present research is focused on the evaluation of the non-linear response of medium-rise 3D RC MRFs with and without vertical irregularities under bi-directional sequential earthquake ground motions using non-linear dynamic analysis. It is evident from the results that collapse probability increases, and 'R' reduces significantly for various RC MRFs subjected to sequential earthquakes, pronouncing the vulnerability and inadequacy of estimation of design base shear by code-specified 'R' under sequential earthquakes.
This work presents a proposal for employing reduced numerical integration in the formulation of the 4-node quadrilateral solid finite element. The use of these low-order integration rules leads to numerical instabilities such as those producing the hourglass effect. The proposed procedure allows evaluating a given constitutive model only in one integration point, achieving an attractive computational cost reduction and, also, successfully controls the hourglass effect. A validation of the proposal is included and discussed throughout the paper. To show the efficiency of the proposal, several application examples of masonry structures are studied and discussed. To represent the non-linear mechanical behaviour of masonry a plastic-damage model is implemented within the application of this sub-integration scheme. Also, in order to have a full and computationally efficient strategy to determine the behaviour of masonry structures, involving its evolution to collapse, a homogenization technique with a macro-modeling approach is used. The methodology discussed throughout this paper demonstrates a substantial computational cost reduction and an improved approximation of the non-linear problem evidenced by a reduction of up to 85% of the computational time for some cases.

A major drawback of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal which introduces inevitable non-linear distortion in the transmission due to the amplifier non-linear property. This causes both in-band distortion and out of band spectrum re-growth. A polynomial based pre-distortion is estimated using the non-linear and inverse non-linear polynomial achieved through the Least Square Error (LSE) method. A new technique of PAPR reduction called 'Phase Realignment' (PR) is proposed which has a optimal effect in improving the BER performance as well as considerable reduction in the PAPR. In this paper we used the PR method along with the 'Peak Clipping' (PC) method is used before the pre-distortion to remove the high peak present in the non constant amplitude of the OFDM signal responsible to drive the amplifier in near saturation region for better performance of the system.
This paper presents a systematic analysis and a simple design of a robust adaptive control law for a class of non linear systems with modeling errors and a time-delay input. The theory for designing a robust adaptive control law based on input- output feedback linearization of non linear systems with uncertainties and a time-delay in the manipulated input by the approach of parameterized state feedback control is presented. The main advantage of this method is that the parameterized state feedback control law can effectively suppress the effect of the most parts of nonlinearities, including system uncertainties and time-delay input in the pp-coupling perturbation form and the relative order of non linear systems is not limited.
This paper presents the investigation of the stochastic responses of seismically isolated bridges subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motions including incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The incoherence effect is examined by considering Harichandran and Vanmarcke coherency model. The effect of the wave-passage is dealt with various wave velocities in the response analysis. Homogeneous firm, medium and soft soil conditions are selected for considering the site-response effect where the bridge supports are constructed. The ground motion is described by filtered white noise and applied to each support points. For seismic isolation of the bridge, single and double concave friction pendulum bearings are used. Due to presence of friction on the concave surfaces of the isolation systems, the equation of motion of is non-linear. The non-linear equation of motion is solved by using equivalent linearization technique of non-linear stochastic analyses. Solutions obtained from the stochastic analyses of non-isolated and isolated bridges to spatially varying earthquake ground motions compared with each other for the special cases of the ground motion model. It is concluded that friction pendulum systems having single and double concave surfaces have important effects on the stochastic responses of bridges to spatially varying earthquake ground motions.
The present paper addresses the nonlinear response of a FG square plate with two smart layers as a sensor and actuator under pressure. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. By evaluating the mechanical and electrical energy, the total energy equation can be minimized with respect to amplitude of displacements and electrical potential. The effect of non homogenous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Obtained results indicate that with increasing the non homogenous index, the displacements and electric potential tend to an asymptotic value. Displacements and electric potential can be presented in terms of planar coordinate system. A linear analysis was employed and then the achieved results are compared with those results that are obtained using the nonlinear analysis. The effect of the geometric nonlinearity is investigated by using the comparison between the linear and nonlinear results. Displacement-load and potential-load curves verified the necessity of a nonlinear analysis rather than a linear analysis. Improvement of the previous results (by the linear analysis) through employing a nonlinear analysis can be presented as novelty of this study.

This study investigates the capital structure policy among Indonesian public companies. Previous studies suggest that capital structure policy could follow either static or dynamic behavior. The sample data used in this study was companies in the manufacturing sector, divided into three sub-sectors: the basic and chemical industry, miscellaneous industry, and the consumer goods industry. This study uses panel data from 2010 to 2018, with the Generalized Least Square (GLS) method and compared whether the fixed effect model is better than the common effect model. The results show that the dynamic and non-linear model tests can explain the capital structure determinants than the static and linear models. The dynamic model shows that the capital structure of a certain year is influenced by the capital structure of the previous year. The findings indicate that the company performs some adjustments in its capital structure policy by referring to the previous debt ratio, which implies support to the trade-off theory (TOT). The study also shows that profitability, tangible assets, size, and age explain the variation of capital structure policy. The patterns on the dynamic and non-linear confirm that capital structure runs in a nonlinear pattern, based on the sector, company condition, and the dynamic environment.
The induction of chromosome aberrations in Hordeum vulgare germs after irradiation is studied for the dose range of 10 to 1,000 mGy. The relationship between the frequency of aberrant cells and the absorbed dose is shown to be non -linear and has a dose-independent plateau within the range of 56-467 mGy where the level of cytogenetic damage is statistically significantly distinguished from the spontaneous level. The comparison of the goodness of the experimental data fitting with mathematical models of different complexities, using the most common quantitative criteria, demonstrates the benefit of the piecewise linear model over the linear and polynomial ones in approximating the cytogenetical disturbance frequency. The results of our study support the conclusion about indirect mechanism of chromosome aberrations induced by low doses or dose rates mutagenesis.
