  • Sulphur-hexafluoride has extensively been used as an insulating gas of electric power equipment in substation for its high dielectric strength, non-toixity and non-flammable properties. But it is very expensive and is liquidizable under the condition of low temperature and high pressure. And it is very sensible to the locally high electric field strength. To resolve these problems, we studied 50% FOV and V-t characteristics of $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures under positive and negative lightning impulses using a 25mm rod-plane gap. 50% FOV of $SF_6-N_2$ 50% mixture was about 85% of pure $SF_6$ and it was known that $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures can be used as an economic substitution insulating gas for $SF_6$.

  • Since 1973, we attain a successful achievement of nation-wide afforestation such as a thick forest and heaped-up leaves. However, the higher of the formation density in forest, the more dangerous to be a large-scale forest fire whenever fire occurs. According to the type of forest in the country, 42% of the forest is occupied by conifer forest that are highly flammable, and the distribution of forest age is in a transition period from immature forest to mature one. And the structure is too weak to the forest fire for the occurrence and spread because there are too many scrub and shrub trees in the forest. As a matter of course, it is on the increase of the thinning-forest that can shift the forest structure from a weak on forest fire to a strong one nowaday. In other words, thinning-forest has primary purposes such as the promotion of producing forest trees, production of excellent timbers, and build-up of public forest area. Furthermore, in some reports, the reduction of ladder fuel by eliminating the vertical/horizontal fuel in a forest and ensuring spaces in the forest can decrease the occurrence of forest fire and the risk of spread of burning as by-effect. Therefore, this study is designed to clarify the relation with the risk of forest fire by an on-spat-investigation of the characteristics of forest composition on the thinning and the non-thinning area.

  • Flammable substances are used in laboratories and industrial process. The flash point (FP) is one of the most important physical properties used to determine the potential for characterizing the fire and explosion hazard of liquids. The FP data at 101.3 kPa were measured for the binary systems {toluene+ethylbenzene}, {methlycyclohenxane+ethylbenzene} and {n-heptane+ ethylbenzene}. The experiments were performed according to the standard test method (ASTM D 3278) using a SETA closed cup flash point tester. The measured FPs were compared with the values predicted using the following activity coefficient models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL), and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower FP was less than 1.74 K.

  • The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames [1]. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability was affected mainly by vortex structure and mixing field near bluff body. FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) based on the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) was employed to clarify the isothermal mixing characteristic and wake flow pattern around bluff body. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. The result of counter flow configuration shows that the flow field depends on air velocity but the mixing field is influenced on the fuel velocity. At low fuel velocity the fuel mole fraction is below the flammable limit and hence the mixing is insufficient to react. Therefore, as the result, the flame formed at low fuel velocity is characterized by non-premixed flames. For the flow field of co-flow configuration, flame stability was affected by fuel velocity as well as air velocity. the vortex generated by fuel stream has counter rotating direction against the air stream. Therefore, the momentum ratio between air and fuel stream was important to decide the flame blow out limit, which is result in the characteristic of the partially premixed reacting wake near extinction.

  • Two-component polyurethane flame retardant coatings (ATTBC) were prepared by blending polyisocyanate (TDI-adduct) with ATTBs mentioned at the previous paper. Most of the physical properties of the flame retardant coatings were comparable to those of non-flame retardant coatings. Especially, the hardness, impact resistance, and accelerated weathering resistance were remarkably improved with the increase of the content of 1,4-butanediol. Coatings containing 10 and 15 wt% 1,4-butanediol, ATTBC-10C and ATTBC-15C, were not flammable in vertical flame-retardancy test. Their char area recorded 1.1${\sim}$11.6 $cm^2$ in 45$^{\circ}$ eckel burner method.

  • This study sought to investigate the characteristics of cellular concrete, such as porosity, strength and density, according to the cell addition rate. Based on the result, it examined the application to a cellular concrete panel. Porosity was found to increase according to the cell addition rate, measuring continuous porosity of 42% and 47%, and total porosity of 61% and 66%. In terms of cell addition rate, measurements were 7% and 11% respectively. Compressive strength represented 5.0MPa, 3.8MPa and 2.8 MPa in terms of 7%, 9% and 11% respectively, decreasing 1 MPa of strength according to every 2% increase of cell addition rate. Density showed 0.55, 0.44 and 0.36 in terms of 7%, 9% and 11% respectively, decreasing 1.0 MPa according to every 2% increase of cell addition rate proportionally. In addition the sandwich panel of cellular concrete which was fabricated during this research was found to be relatively heavy and non-flammable with an excellent strength of 4.0 MPa. Compared with a light concrete panel, considering the compressive strength that accountsfor 10 MPa, it appeared relatively low in strength. However it would be excellent for application due to the light density of only 0.4 MPa.

  • Recently, supercritical fluid process has been widely used in material synthesis and processing due to their remarkable properties such as high diffusivity, low viscosity, and low surface tension. Supercritical carbon dioxide is the most attractive solvent owing to their characteristics including non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, and also it has moderate critical temperature and critical pressure. In addition, supercritical carbon dioxide would dissolve many small organic molecules and most polymers. In this study, we have prepared the poly (ethylene oxide)/clay nanocomposites using supercritical fluid as a carbon dioxide. Commercialized Cloisites-15A and Cloisites-30B used in this study, which are modified with quaternary ammonium salts. The nanocomposites of polymer/clay were characterized by XRD, TGA and DSC. Poly (ethylene oxide)/clay nanocomposites by supercritical fluid show higher thermal stability than nanocomposites prepared by melt process. In addition, supercritical fluid process would be increased dispersibility of the nanoclay in the matrix.

  • Flammable substances, such as organic solvents, are commonly used in laboratories and industrial processes. The flash point of flammable liquid mixtures is a very important parameter for characterizing the ignition and explosion hazards, and the flash points of mixtures of $C_2{\sim}C_3$ alcohols and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane were measured in the present study. The 2,2,4-trimethylpentane is an important component of gasoline and is frequently used in the petroleum industry as a solvent. Lower flash point data were measured for the binary systems {ethanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}, {1-propanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}, and {2-propanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}. The flash point measurements were carried out according to the standard test method (ASTM D3278) using a Stanhope-Seta closed cup flash point tester. The measured flash points were compared with the predicted values calculated using Raoult's law and also following $G^E$ models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL) and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). These models were able to predict the experimental flash points for different compositions of {$C_2{\sim}C_3$ alcohols + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane} mixtures with minimal deviations. The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower flash point was less than 1.28 K. A minimum flash point behaviour was observed in all of the systems as in the many observed cases for the hydrocarbon and alcohol mixtures.

  • 3D printing is not only at the fundamental study and small-scale level, but has recently been producing buildings that can be inhabited by people. Buildings require a lot of cost and labor to work on the form work, but if 3D printing is applied to the building, the construction industry is received attention from technologies using 3D printing as it can reduce the construction period and cost. 3D printing technology for buildings can be divided into structural and non-structural materials, of which 3D printing is applied to non-structural materials. Because 3D printing needs to be additive manufacturing, control such as curing speed and workability is needed. Since cement mortar has a large shrinkage due to evaporation of water, cement polymer dispersion is used to improve the hardening speed, workability, and adhesion strength. The addition of polymer dispersion to cement mortar improves the tensile strength and brittleness between the cement hydrate and the polymer film. Cement mortar using polymer materials can be additive manufacturing but it has limited height that can be additive manufacturing due to its high density. When light-weight materials are mixed with polymer cement mortar, the density of polymer cement mortar is lowered and the height of additive manufacturing, so it is essential to use light-weight materials. However, the use of EVA redispersible polymer powder and light-weight materials, additional damage such as cracks in cement mortar can occur at high temperatures such as fires. This study produced a test specimen incorporating light-weight materials and EVA redispersible polymer powder to produce exterior building materials using 3D printing, and examined flame resistance performance through water absorption rate, length change rate, and cone calorimeter test and non-flammable test. From the test result, the test specimen using silica sand and light-weight aggregate showed good flame resistance performance, and if the EVA redispersible polymer powder is applied below 5%, it shows good flame resistance performance.

  • Chlorine is one of the most produced and most used non-flammable chemical substances in the world even though its toxicity and high reactivity cause the ozone layer depletion. However, in modern life, it is impossible to live a good life without using Chlorine and its derivatives since they are being used as an typical ingredient in more than 40 percent of the manufactured goods including medicines, detergents, deodorant, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and plastic, etc. Even if Chlorine has been handled and distributed in various business (small and medium-sized businesses, water purification plants, distribution company, etc.), there have been few researches about its possible health hazard and transportation risks. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to make a detailed assessment of Chlorine-related risks and to model an index of chemicals transportation risks that is adequate for domestic circumstances. The assessment of possible health hazard and transportation risks was made on 13 kinds of hazardous chemicals, including liquid chlorine. This research may be contributed to standardizing the risk assessment of Chlorine and other hazardous chemicals by using an index of transportation risks.
