CONTACT FORCE MODEL FOR A BEAM WITH DISCRETELY SPACED GAP SUPPORTS AND ITS APPROXIMATED SOLUTION

  • This paper proposes an approximated contact force model to identify the nonlinear behavior of a fuel rod with gap supports; also, the numerical prediction of interfacial forces in the mechanical contact of fuel rods with gap supports is studied. The Newmark integration method requires the current status of the contact force, but the contact force is not given a priori. Taylor's expansion can be used to predict the unknown contact force; therefore, it should be guaranteed that the first derivative of the contact force is continuous. This work proposes a continuous and differentiable contact force model with the ability to estimate the current state of the contact force. An approximated convex and differentiable potential function for the contact force is described, and a variational formulation is also provided. A numerical example that considers the particularly stiff supports has been studied, and a fuel rod with hardening supports was also examined for a realistic simulation. An approximated proper solution can be obtained using the results, and abrupt changes from the contacting state to non-contacting state, or vice versa, can be relieved. It can also be seen that not only the external force but also the developed contact force affects the response.

  • Moire topography method is a well-known non-contacting 3-D measuement method. Recently, the automatic 3-D measurement by moire topography has been required since the method was frequently applied to the engineering and medical fields. 3-D measurement using projection moire topography is very attractive because of it's high measuring speed and high sensitivity. In this paper, using two-wavelength method of projection moire topography tested to measuring object with the 2x-ambiguity problem. Experimental results prove that the proposed scheme is capable of finding absolute fringe orders, so that the 2x-ambiguity problem can be effectively overcome so as to treat large step discontinuities in measured objects.

  • $Moir\acute{e}$ topography method is a well-known non-contacting 3-D measurement method. The 3-D measurement using projection $Moir\acute{e}$ topography is very attractive because of its high measuring speed and high sensitivity.   • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for utilizing visual information for non-contact predicting method of friction coefficient. Coefficient of friction is very important in driving on road and traversing over obstacle. Our algorithm is based on terrain classification for visual image. The proposed method, non-contacting approach, has advantage over other methods that extract material characteristic of road by sensors contacting road surface. This method is composed of learning group(experiment, grouping material) and predicting friction coefficient group(Bayesian classification prediction function). Every group include previous work of vision. Advantage of our algorithm before entering such terrain can be very useful for avoiding slippery areas. We make experiment on measurement of friction coefficient of terrain. This result is utilized real friction coefficient as prediction method. We show error between real friction coefficient and predicted friction coefficient for performance evaluation of our algorithm.

  • Non-contacting optical microscopes are increasingly used in recent industrial applications of probes for coordinate measuring machines. They have been found more efficient than conventional touch trigger porbes with ball tips especially in inspecting small-sized objects. There are two major factors affecting measuring accuracy: (1) geometric relations between coordinate systems, (2) magnification ratios of a microscope. In order to determine the magnification ratios exactly, optical imaging of edge was theroretically analyzed and practically adopted to image processing for edge detection. In addition, this paper proposes a geometric calibration method to obtain exact coordinates of measured points from the relations between the machine coordinate system and the image. In the method, the error according to the squareness between the machine axises was also removed. The method was practically adopted to a real coordinate measuring machine. An ultraprecision measurement of 0.2 um uncertainty can be practically achieved.

  • In surface grinding, the conditions of the grinding wheel give a significant effect on the ground workpieces comparing with other metal removal processes. In this paper, to assist the development, a non-contacting optical method is introduced to make in-process measurements of scattering intensities from laser beam during surface grinding processes. This show indications of changes in surface texture of wheel working surfaces. Also, in order to determine the dressing time monitoring method of grinding wheel in surface grinding, a three-dimensional computer simulation of the grinding operation has been attempted based on the contact mechanism and surface-shaping system between the grinding wheel and the workpiece. The optical dressing time is determined based on the amount of the grain wear and work surface roughness.

  • Laser beam machining (LBM) using nanosecond pulsed laser is widely known to be rapid and non-wear process for micromachining. However, the quality itself cannot meet the precision standard due to the recast layer and heat affected zone. In this paper, a fabrication method for machining micro features in stainless steel using a hybrid process of LBM using nanosecond pulsed laser and electrochemical etching (ECE) is reported. ECE uses non-contacting method for precise surface machining and selectively removes the recast layer and heat affected zone produced by laser beam in an effective way. Compared to the single LBM process, the hybrid process of LBM and ECE enhanced the quality of the micro features.
