  • A non-axisymmetric mass distribution of galactic structures including bulge (or bar) causes gas inflow from the disk to the nuclear region, including intense star formation within few hundred parsecs of galactic central. In order to investigate the relation between the ellipticity of the bulge and the presence of a nuclear starburst, we use a volume-limited sample of galaxies with Mr < -19.5 mag at 0.02 < z < 0.05 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Total sample is 3252 spiral galaxies, which include nuclear starburst galaxies. We find that the occurrence of nuclear starbursts has a moderate correlation with bulge ellipticity of intermediate-type spiral galaxies (morphology classes Sab-Sb) in low galaxy number density environments and isolated regions where the distance between the target galaxies and the closest galaxies is relatively far. In high galaxy number density environments and interacting regions, close encounters and mergers between galaxies can cause gas inflow to the nuclear region even without the presence of non-axisymmetric bulges.

  • A computer-aided process planning (CAPP) system for rotationally symmetric deep drawing products has been developed. The application for non-axisymmetric components, however, has not been reported yet. Therefore, this study investigates process sequence design in deep drawing process and constructs an expert system of process planning for non-axisymmetric motor frame products with elliptical shape. The system developed consists of four modules. The first one is recognition of shape module to recognize the products. The second one is a 3-D modeling module to calculate surface area for non-axisymmetric products. The third one is a blank design module that creates an oval-shaped blank with the identical surface area. The forth one is a process planning module based on production rules that play the best important role in an expert system for manufacturing. The production rules are generated and upgraded by interviewing with field engineers. The constructed system using AutoLISP language under the AutoCAD environment is baled on the knowledge base system which is involved a lot of expert's technology. Results of this system will be provide effective aids to the designer and engineer in this field.

  • The circles deform into various shape during deformation, the major and minor axes of which indicate the direction of the major and minor principal strains. Likewise, the measured dimensions are used to determine the major and minor principal strain magnitudes. This circular grid technique of measuring strains can be used to diagnose the causes of necking and fracture in industrial practice and to investigate whether these defects were caused by material property variation, changes in lubrication, of incorrect press settings. In non-axisymmetric deep drawing, three modes of forming regimes are found: draw, stretch, plane strain. The stretch mode for non-axisymmetric deep drawing could be defined when the major and minor strains are positive. The draw mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is negative, and plane strain mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is zero. Through experiments the draw mode was shown on the wall and flange are one of a drawn cup, while the plane strain and the stretch mode were on the punch head and the punch corner area respectively, We observed that the punch load of elliptical deep drawing was decreased according to increase of die corner radius and the thickness deformation of minor side was more large than major side.

  • A non-axisymmetric mass distribution in the galactic bulge (or bar) causes gas flow from the disk to the nuclear region, inducing intense star formation in the nucleus. We investigate the relation between the ellipticity of the bulge and the presence of a nuclear starburst by using a volume-limited sample of galaxies. We use 1,680 spiral galaxies with Mr < -19.5 at 0.02 <= z < 0.05 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We find that the occurrence of nuclear starburst has a moderate correlation with bulge ellipticity in intermediate-type spiral galaxies (morphology classes Sab~Sb) in low galaxy number density environments. • Prestressing tendons in a nuclear containment building dome are non-axisymmetrically arranged in most cases. However, simple axisymmetric modeling of the containment has been often employed in practice, which requires the axisymmetric approximation of the actual tendon arrangements in the dome. A procedure was previously proposed that can implement the actual 3D tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model for CANDU type. This paper further verifies and compares some methodologies adopted in the proposed scheme through some numerical examples.

  • The design analysis of axisymmetric, multi-stage deep drawing dies was performed using the rigid-viscoplastic finite element formulation. In the formulation the axisymmetric CFS algorithm was employed. Hill's non-quadratic normal anisotropic yield criterion and isotropic hardening rule were considered. For trial initial displacements and tool contact points. the geometric force equilibrium method was adopted. In order to see the validity of the formulation, the multi-stage deep drawing processes of shell-cylinder front part of hydraulic booster were simulated. The simulation showed good agreements with measurments and PAM-STAMP results.

  • A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.

  • The nonlinear buckling response of nano composite anti-symmetric functionally graded polymeric microplate reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) rested on orthotropic elastomeric foundation with temperature dependent properties is investigated. For the carbon-nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) microplate, a uniform distribution (UD) and four types of functionally graded (FG) distribution are considered. Based on orthotropic Mindlin plate theory, von Karman geometric nonlinearity and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations are derived. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is employed to calculate the non-linear buckling response of the plate. Effects of FG distribution type, elastomeric foundation, aspect ratio (thickness to width ratio), boundary condition, orientation of foundation orthotropy and temperature are considered. The results are validated. It is found that the critical buckling load without elastic medium is significantly lower than considering Winkler and Pasternak medium.

  • 'There are a lot of process variables, exerted influence on the formability of products, in deep drawing process. Particularly, it is important that the punch and die shape radius of the process variables. Though researches have been performed on the deep drawing of sheet metal forming, like this study, but it is insufficient the actual circumstances that researches for process variables of the non-axisymmetric deep drawing products. In this study, An effect on thickness distribution is grasped as alteration of the punch and die shape radius in the process of non-axisyrnmetric deep drawing products, and then the optimal punch and die shape radius were presented, they were verified by the numerical analysis method (FEM).

  • Applicability of the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model to the analysis of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow of a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on non-orthogonal including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on a non-orthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components are used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The predicted results using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model of the unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow within a cylinder of reciprocating model engine including port/valve assembly are compared to these from the modified k-$\varepsilon$ model and experimental data. Using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model seems the have some potential for the simulations of the unsteady turbulent flow within a port/valve-cylinder assembly over the modified k-$\varepsilon$model.
