  • Many clinical studies have suggested that the blood flow in ideal geometry is involved in the development of atherosclerosis. This study simulated blood flow in the abdominal artery with real geometry to investigate MWSS(mean wall shear stress), AWSS(amplitude of wall shear stress) and OSI(oscillator shear index). The calculation grid for the real geometry was constructed by extracting the surface of arterial wall from CT(Computed Tomography) or MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) sheets called as DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicines). The calculated MWSS, AWSS and OSI are much different from those of ideal geometry calculation. The MWSS increased while the AWSS decreased. Many shear forces are related to shapes of gradient. This paper will give clinical datum where the MWSS, AWSS and OSI are strong or weak. The hemodynamic analysis based on real geometry can provide surgeons with more reliable information about the effect of blood flow.

  • This study presents the application of a polymer behavior model that considers fluid mechanics and heat transfer effects in a deposition system. The analysis of the polymer fluid properties is very important in the fabrication of precise microstructures. This fluid behavior model involves the calculation of velocity distribution and mass flow rates that include the effect of heat loss in the needle. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by comparing estimated mass fluid rates with experimental values. The mass fluid rates under various process conditions, such as pressure, temperature, and needle size, reflected the actual deposition state relatively well, and the assumption that molten polycaprolactone(PCL) is a non-Newtonian fluid was reasonable. The successful fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures demonstrated that the model is valid for predicting the polymer behavior characteristics in the microstructure fabrication process. The results of this study can be used to investigate the effect of various parameters on fabricated structures before turning to experimental approaches.

  • Quality changes of starch syrups were investigated during storage at 20 and $60^{\circ}C$. Color properties such as spectrophotometric properties, HMF and Hunter color value were continuously increased during storage period. And they were largely changed as much as storage temperature and hydrolysis degree were higher. Starch syrups were all showed to flow behaviors as non-Newtonian fluids and increased slightly during storage. And monosaccharide was decreased and di- and oligosaccharide were slightly increased during storage.

  • A numerical analysis on the microstructural evolutions of microcellular and cellular ${\alpha}-aluminum$ phase in the gas-atomized Al-8wt. pct droplets was represented. The 2-dimensional non-Newtonian heat transfer and the dendritic growth theory in the undercooled melt were combined under the assumptions of a point nucleation on droplet surface and the macroscopically smooth solid-liquid interface enveloping the cell tips. It reproduced the main characteristic features of the reported microstructures quite well. It predicted a considerable volume fraction of segregation-free region in a droplet smaller than $l0{\mu}m$ if an initial undercooling larger than 100K is given. The volume fractions of the microcellular region($g_A$) and the sum of the microcellular and cellular region($g_a$) were predicted as functions of the heat transfer coefficient, h and initial undercooling, ${\triangle}T$. It was shown that $g_A$ and $g_a$, in the typical gas-atomization processes with $h=0.1-1.0W/cm^2K$, are dominated by ${\triangle}T$ and h, respectively, but for h larger than $4.0W/cm^2K$, a fully microcellular structure can be obtained irrespective of the initial undercooling.

  • Printing inks are basically dispersions of solid pigment particles in a vehicle. Pigment flocculation and/or colloidal aggregates created by thixotrope additives form a three- dimensional network in the inks. This structure complicates the flow behaviour of inks. However, if the internal structure is formed under control, the printing process will benefit from it because the ink must satify rheological requirements over a very wide range of shear conditions. The presence of internal structure results in the following prominent non-Newtonian rheological properties: viscoelasticity, yield stress, shear thinning and thixotropy. If the components of printing inks were changed, the rheological characteristics such as viscosity, yield stress, viscoelasticity and tack value were considerably varied. Thus, in this paper, the effects of changing the content of rosin modified phenolic resin on rheological properties of the vehicle will be studied. For that, the rheological properties were found by flow, yield stress, creep and oscillation measurements using Bohlin C-VOR Rotational Rheometer. And Emulsion rheology and its microstructure will be investigated.

  • Some rheological properties of subfractions for dextran in the molecular weights range from $3{\times}10^4$ to $2{\times}10^6$ was investigated at room temperature. The dependence of the viscosity on concentration, shear rate, pH & ionic strength, temperature and solvent effect was observed. From the experimental data the Mark-Houwink viscosity equation in water at $25^{\circ}C$ was determined for samples having the molecular weight ranging from $3{\times}10^4$ to $2{\times}10^6$ as$[{\eta}]=3.1{\times}10^{-3}\;Mw^{0.39}(in\;dl/g)$. The intrinsic stiffness of the dextran backbone was estimated by evaluating the 'characteristic ratio' $C_{\infty}$, which is below the 0.082. In the concentrated region, the viscosity was decreased with increasing shear rate and was exponentially decreased with raising temperature, the viscosity showed the maximum value at neutral condition. From the experimental data, it was concluded that dextran chain, linked by the ${\alpha}-1$, 6-glucosidic linkage, behaves like a flexible random coil chain in aqueous solution, dextran solutions were pseudoplastic power law fluids among the empirical models of non-Newtonian behavior. Urea was an active reagent which increases the viscosity and swells dextran while pyrididine and glycerol were inactive reagents. Also, it could be estimated that the formation of gel structure is promote to the neutral state, the molecular weight larger than $2{\times}10^5$, when electrolytic concentration is IN and Ureas is use to solvent.

  • For the production of new exo-biopolymers from microorganisms, an exe-biopolymer producing bacterial strain was isolated from the composter used in composting of organic wastes. Bacteriological properties of this strain and physicochemical properties of producing exo-biopolymer were investigated. The isolated strain was identified as Enterobacter sp. through its morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. The results of color reactions, CPC (cetyl pyridinium chloride) precipitation and infra red absorption spectral analysis indicated that this exo-biopolymer was presumed as an acidic polysaccharide with uronic acid. This polysaccharide was identified as hetero-polysaccharide consisting of galactose, mannose and galacturonic acid by gas chromatography, and the molecular weight of exopolysaccharide purified by gel chromatography were about 370,000 daltons. The polysaccharide solutions(0.50-2.0%, w/v) exhibited non-Newtonian flow behavior with pseudoplastic property and showed the ability of gel formation at above 1.5% (w/v) of polysaccharide concentration.

  • The present study investigates the flow characteristics of simulant gel propellant(carbopol 0.5%wt) in a variety of injectors. Rheological data for gel propellant has been measured and injector flow characteristics for plain-orifice, chamfered-orifice and venturi type injector have been numerically analyzed. The apparent viscosity of plain-orifice and chamfered-orifice have tendency to increase along axial direction, whereas for venturi type injector, low viscosity has been achieved in the injector flow. This phenomenon was clearly pronounced as Reynolds number is increased.

  • The present numerical study investigates the effect of a secondary flow on the heat transfer in order to delineate the mechanism of laminar heat transfer enhancement of a viscoelastic fluid in rectangular ducts. The second normal stress generating a secondary flow is modeled by adopting the Reiner-Rivlin constitutive equation and the calculated secondary flow showed good agreement with experiments. The primary velocity U as well as the pressure drop were not affected by the secondary flow in rectangular ducts, whose order of magnitude is less than 0.1% of the primary velocity. The small magnitude of the secondary flow, however, affect moderately the temperature fields. The calculated Nusselt numbers with secondary flow show 50% heat transfer enhancement over those of a purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid, which are considerably lower than the experimental values. Therefore, we conclude that there should be an additional heat transfer enhancement mechanism involved in the viscoelastic fluid such as temperature-dependence.

  • Airtight containers have been widely used in many industries and household. They need a packing for sealing between the inside and outside. Previous packing materials have some drawbacks like stench, stickiness, and difficulty of applying to automated manufacturing systems. So, a new packing material which is harmless and suitable for automation is needed. This study performed a hot plate welding process of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) as the packing material. The hot plate welding process included a phase change process of solidification and melting. The porosity-enthalpy method was adopted in order to simulate phase change problems. The TPE showed non-Newtonian fluid characteristics during the melting process. Since properties of SEBS are not well-defined, we established TPE properties by observing the melting behavior of TPE. In order to find an optimized condition, a parametric study including packing thickness, shapes, hot plate temperature, and thermal resistance, was conducted.
