  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of the injection timing on the spray and combustion characteristics in a spray-guided direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine under lean stratified operation. An in-cylinder pressure analysis, exhaust emissions measurement, and visualization of the spray and combustion were employed in this study. The combustion in a stratified DISI engine was found to have both lean premixed and diffusion controlled flame combustion characteristics. The injection timing condition corresponding to the stratified mixture characteristics was verified to be a dominant factor for these flame characteristics. For the early injection timing, a non-luminous blue flame and low combustion efficiency were observed as a result of the lean homogeneous mixture formation. On the other hand, a luminous sooting flame was shown at the late injection timing because of an under-mixed mixture formation. In addition, the smoke emission and incomplete combustion products were increased at the late injection timing as a result of the increased locally rich area. On the other hand, the NOx emissions decreased and IMEP increased as the injection timing retarded. The combustion phasing produced by the injection timing was verified as the reason for this observation.

  • Submicron-sized $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ upconversion phosphor particles were synthesized by spray pyrolysis, and their luminescent properties were characterized by changing the concentration of $Er^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$. $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ showed an intense green and red emission due to the $^4S_{3/2}$ or $^2H_{11/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ and $^4F_{9/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ transition of $Er^{3+}$ ions, respectively. In terms of the emission intensity, the optimal concentrations of Er and Yb were 1.0 % and 2.0%, respectively, and the concentration quenching was found to occur via the dipole-dipole interaction. Upconversion mechanism was discussed by using the dependency of emission intensities on pumping powers and considering the dominant depletion processes of intermediate energy levels for the red and green emission with changing the $Er^{3+}$ concentration. An energy transfer from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$ in $CeO_2$ host was mainly involved in ground-state absorption (GSA), and non-radiative relaxation from $^4I_{11/2}$ to $^4I_{13/2}$ of $Er^{3+}$ was accelerated by the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping. As a result, the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping led to greatly enhance the upconversion intensity with increasing ratios of the red to green emission. Finally, it is revealed that the upconversion emission is achieved by two photon processes in which the linear decay dominates the depletion of intermediate energy levels for green and red emissions for $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphor.

  • The dominant land use at the Seonakdong river watershed is paddy and forest areas and the Seonakdong river stands still. Thus, the water pollution in the Seonakdong river is becoming more serious for the non-point source. In this study, SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model was evaluated for simulation of flow and water quality behaviors in Seonakdong river. To perform the calibration and verification of the SWAT model, the measurements of discharge and water quality were performed for the period from 2006 to 2007 at 5 gauging stations in Seonakdong river. The $R^2$ value for discharge and water quality were 0.86 and 0.70 respectively for calibration after the sensitive analysis. The $R^2$ value for discharge and water quality were 0.81 and 0.51 respectively for verification. The simulation results show that BOD value in the river tends to decrease after the opening of gates and the patterns of TN and TP concentrations are similar as that of BOD. The gate operators need to determine how to supply water in drought season for effective water quality improvement. This study shows that the SWAT model, which is capable of simulating hydrologic and water quality behaviors temporarily and spatially at watershed scale, could be used to get the gate operation rule for the water quality management in Seonakdong river.

  • We aimed to examine the co-doping effects of 1/6 mol% $Mn_3O_4$ and 1/4 mol% $Cr_2O_3$ (Mn:Cr = 1:1) on the reaction, microstructure, and electrical properties, such as the bulk defects and grain boundary properties, of ZnO-$Bi_2O_3-Sb_2O_3$ (ZBS; Sb/Bi = 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) varistors. The sintering and electrical properties of Mn,Cr-doped ZBS, ZBS(MnCr) varistors were controlled using the Sb/Bi ratio. Pyrochlore ($Zn_2Bi_3Sb_3O_{14}$), ${\alpha}$-spinel ($Zn_7Sb_2O_{12}$), and ${\delta}-Bi_2O_3$ (also ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ at Sb/Bi ${\leq}$ 1.0) were detected for all of the systems. Mn and Cr are involved in the development of each phase. Pyrochlore was decomposed and promoted densification at lower temperature on heating in Sb/Bi = 1.0 system by Mn rather than Cr doping. A more homogeneous microstructure was obtained in all systems affected by ${\alpha}$-spinel. In ZBS(MnCr), the varistor characteristics were improved dramatically (non-linear coefficient, ${\alpha}$ = 40~78), and seemed to form ${V_o}^{\cdot}$(0.33 eV) as a dominant defect. From impedance and modulus spectroscopy, the grain boundaries can be seen to have divided into two types, i.e. one is tentatively assigned to ZnO/$Bi_2O_3$ (Mn,Cr)/ZnO (0.64~1.1 eV) and the other is assigned to the ZnO/ZnO (1.0~1.3 eV) homojunction.

From impedance and modulus spectroscopy, the grain boundaries were found to have been divided into two types, i.e., one is tentatively assigned to ZnO/$Bi_2O_3$ (Ni,Cr)/ZnO (0.98 eV) and the other is assigned to a ZnO/ZnO (~1.5 eV) homojunction.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of inoculation of microorganism isolated from pig feces on nutrient contents of fermented hulless barley. The microbial flora in feces of a total of four crossbred piglets ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$) was analyzed by 16s rRNA sequencing. The most abundant strain was then selected for fermentation of hulless barley. Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) was dominant (64.56%) in intestinal microbial flora in the pig feces. The selected candidate strain showed significantly higher survival rate at pH 7 than at pH 2.5 and 3.0 (p < 0.05). Incubated culture containing the candidate strain showed an increased growth rate with lower pH levels after 7.5 h incubation compared to initial incubation period (p < 0.05). When compared with commercial multiple probiotics which were used as control, the selected strain showed faster growth rate at 5 h post-incubation (p < 0.05). During the fermentation period, neither inoculated nor non-inoculated control hulless barley showed any change in pH value. Crude fat, fiber and ash contents were lower (p < 0.05) in hulless barley inoculated by the selected strain compared to control. However, moisture, energy, NDF and ADF were not affected by the inoculation of strain or fermentation period. Lactic acid was increased and acetic acid was decreased in the hulless barley inoculated with the selected strain during the fermentation period (p < 0.05). Taken together, our results suggest that L. plantarum derived from the pigs could be utilized as a new microorganism for manufacturing fermented feed stuffs.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

  • Headwater streams provide various microhabitats, resulting in high diversity of macroinvertebrate community. In this study, we compared the differences of communities between two adjacent headwater streams (Jangjeon stream (GRJ; GRJ1-GRJ5) and Haanmi stream (GRH; GRH1-GRH3)) in Jungwang and Gariwang mountains, Gangwon-do and evaluated the effects of habitat condition to the macroinvertebrates community composition. In order to characterize the macroinvertebrate communities and extract influential environmental factors, we applied to Cluster analysis (CA), Indicator species analysis and Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Total 33,613 individuals in 3 phyla, 5 classes, 13 orders, 51 families, and 114 taxa (genera or species) were collected. Gammarus sp. was dominant at the upper stream of GRJ, whereas Chironomidae spp. was abundant at GRH and the downstream of GRJ. The CA classified samples into six clusters (1-6) reflecting spatial and temporal variation of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Benthic macroinvertebrate community composition was significantly different between two adjacent streams. Sweltsa sp. 1, Psilotreta kisoensis, Rhyacophila shikotsuensis and Serratella setigera were identified as representative indicator species for clusters 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively. Similar to CA results, NMDS revealed the spatial and temporal differences of benthic macroinvertebrate communities, indicating the difference of community composition as well as microhabitat condition. Forest composition, proportion of boulders (>256 mm), and water velocity were main factors affecting the macroinvertebrate community composition.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the seasonal patterns of zooplankton community dynamics in the lower Nakdong River (Mulgum, RK; river kilometer; 27 km from the estuarine barrage), with a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) based on weekly sampled data collected over ten years(1994 ${\sim}$ 2003). It is well known that zooplankton groups had important role in the food web of freshwater ecosystems, however, less attention has been paid to this group compared with other community constituents. A non-linear patterning algorithm of the SOM was applied to discover the relationship among river environments and zooplankton community dynamics. Limnological variables (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH , Secchi transparency, turbidity, chlorophyll a, discharge, etc.) were taken into account to implement patterning seasonal changes of zooplankton community structures (consisting of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods). The trained SOM model allocated zooplankton on the map plane with limnological parameters. Three zooplankton groups had high similarities to one another in their changing seasonal patterns, Among the limnological variables, water temporature was highly related to the zooplankton community dynamics (especially for cladocerans). The SOM model illustrated the suppression of zooplankton due to the increased river discharge, particularly in summer. Chlorophyll a concentrations were separated from zooplankton data set on the map plane, which would intimate the herbivorous activity of dominant grazers. This study introduces the zooplankton dynamics associated with limnological parameters using a nonlinear method, and the information will be useful for managing the river ecosystem, with respect to the food web interactions.
