  • This paper measures the impacts of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on the emissions of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in Korean export industries. The Korean industrial exports were forecasted by employing Bayesian Kalman Filter Vector Auto-Regression (BVAR) model. The emissions of $CO_2$ were then estimated by applying the $CO_2$ emission coeffcients on the conditionally forecasted values of export by industries. Under the conditional scenario of the 50% reduction in current tariff rate through FTA between Korea and China, the total $CO_2$ emissions in Korea were expected to increase by 1.96% compared to the BAU (Non FT A) trend at the end of 2010. Another conditional scenario with no tariff after 2012 was also adopted. In this case, the total $CO_2$ emlssions were estimated to increase by 2.06% compared to the BAU up until the end of 2014. These facts imply that the FTA between Korea and China would not result in the significant increase of $CO_2$ emissions in Korea.

  • Among other critical conditions in rotor svstems the large non-linearvibration excited by bearing non-linearity causes the rotor failure. For reducing thiscatastrophic failure and predictive analysis of this phenomena the identificationanalysis of bearing non-linearity in an anisotropic rotor system using the higherorder dFRFs are developed and are shown to be theoretically feasible as innon-rotating structures. For the identification of the anisotropic rotor withanisotropic bearing non-linearity expressed by the displacement in polynomial form, the higher order dFRFs based upon the Volterra series are investigated and depicttheir features by using the simple forms of the normal and reverse dFRFs. Theyproduce additional sub-harmonic resonant peaks, which indicate the existence ofhigher order non-linearties, and show the energy transfer such that the modes fornormal and reuerse dFRFs are exchanged, which are the fundamental differencesfrom what we can expect in linear ones.

  • The effects of Lavandula angustifolia extract fermented with Pediococcus pentosaceus DK1 on UVB-mediated MMP-1 expression and collagen decrease in human skin fibroblasts were determined, and the conversion of its components was also analyzed. Fermentation was performed at varying L. angustifolia extract and MRS medium concentrations, and optimal fermentation conditions were selected. L. angustifolia extracts showed decreased cytotoxicity after fermentation in the fibroblasts. UVB-irradiated fibroblasts treated with fermented L. angustifolia extract showed MMP-1 expression 8.2-14.0% lower than that in UVB-irradiated fibroblasts treated with non-fermented extract. This was observed even at fermented extract concentrations lower than those of non-fermented extracts. Fibroblasts treated with fermented L. angustifolia extract showed 20% less reduction in collagen production upon UVB irradiation than those treated with non-fermented extracts. UVB-irradiated fibroblasts treated with fermented L. angustifolia extracts showed 50% higher inhibition of ROS generation than those treated with non-fermented extract. Luteolin and apigenin glycosides of L. angustifolia were converted during fermentation, and identified using RP-HPLC and LC/ESI-MS. Therefore, the effects of L. angustifolia extract on MMP-1 expression and collagen decrease in UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblasts were increased through fermentation by P. pentosaceus.

  • The propagation rates of advancing and retreating non-premixed edge flames in a slot-jet counterflow were measured as a function of strain rate for varying jet spacing, mixture strength, stoichiometric mixture fractions $(Z_{st})$ and Lewis numbers (Le). Methane and propane fuels were tested and nitrogen and carbon dioxide were used as inerts. As results, we could identify igniting fronts, retreating fronts, two total extinction limits, and short-length edge flames. A burner separation affected to a low extinction limit only. Regimes for advancing and retreating edges together with total extinction were mapped in terms of normalized flame thickness and heat loss factor for $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ mixtures. Edge flames for $Z_{st}$ > 0.5 behaved like a stronger mixture while for $Z_{st}$ < 0.5 showed deteriorated feature, because of relative locations of a non-premixed flame and intermediate species such as CO and $H_2$. Furthermore, due to the relative importance of heat loss, propagating speeds of edge flames were significantly enhanced in $CH_4/O_2/CO_2$ mixtures (Le < 1) demonstrating increasing stability limits. However $C_3H_8/O_2/N_2$ mixtures (Le > 1) showed opposite result.

  • Dialkylamine (di-)nitrobenzoates as vapor corrosion inhibitor were synthesized with dialkylamines and (di-)nitrobenzoic acids. The compounds were analyzed by elemental analyzer, FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectrophotometer. Corrosion inhibition of synthetic compounds and additives [$(NH_4)_2CO_3$, $NaHCO_3$] against ferrous and non-ferrous metal was investigated by potentiostatic method [1% (w/v) corrosion inhibitor in 1M $Na_2SO_4$ aqueous solution] respectively. For corrosion inhibition of ferrous metal, dialkylamine 4-nitrobenzoates were better inhibitor than dialkylamine 3, 5-dinitrobenzoates, the passivating current density ($i_p$) of dialkylamine 4-nitrobenzoate was shown $4.78mA/cm^2$. While, for non-ferrous metal, dialkylamine 3, 5-dinitrobenzoates were better, those of dipropylamine 3, 5-dinitrobenzoate and hexamethyleneimine 3, 5-dinitrobenzoate were shown 36 and $37mA/cm^2$. Additive effect of $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ and $NaHCO_3$ for corrosion inhibition of ferrous metal was excellent but that of non-ferrous metal was not. Optimum ratios of diethylamine 4-nitrobenzoate with $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ and $NaHCO_3$ were 4 : 6 and 5 : 5 (V/V), and passivating current densities ($i_p$) of the mixtures were shown 0.26 and $0.85mA/cm^2$, respectively.

  • In this study, a hollow fiber support membrane was prepared by a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method using a polysulfone (PSf). The prepared hollow fiber support membrane was coated with PDMS and Pebax to prepare a hollow fiber composite membrane. The prepared composite membrane was measured for permeance and selectivity for pure CO2, H2, O2 and N2. Gas separation performance of the module having the highest selectivity (CO2/H2) among the prepared composite membrane modules was measured according to the change in stage cut using simulated gas. The composition of the simulated gas used at this time was 70% CO2 and 30% H2. In the 1 stage experiment, it was possible to obtain values of about 60% of H2 concentration and 12% of H2 recovery. In order to overcome the low H2 concentration and recovery, 2 stage serial test was performed, and through this, it was possible to achieve 70% H2 concentration and 70% recovery. Through this, it was possible to derive a separation process configuration for CO2/H2 separation.

  • Non-thermal plasma decomposition of gas-phase styrene was investigated in this study using three different types of plasma reactors; dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) reactor, surface discharge (SD) reactor and plasma-driven catalyst (PDC) reactor packed with 2.0 wt% $Ag/TiO_2$ catalysts. The main parameters used for the comparative assessment of the plasma reactors include the decomposition efficiency, carbon balance, byproduct distribution, COx ($CO+CO_2$) selectivity and COx yield. The SD and the DBD reactors showed better conversion efficiency of styrene than that of the PDC reactor due to their larger capability in ozone formation. On the other hand, the PDC reactor showed better carbon balance, the yield and the selectivity of COx. The required specific input energies to achieve 100% carbon balance from the decomposition of 100 ppmv styrene using the plasma alone reactors and the PDC reactor were 420 J/L and 110 J/L, respectively. The major decomposition products in gas-phase were CO, $CO_2$ and HCOOH regardless of the types of plasma reactors. In the case of SD and DBD reactors, the $CO_2$ selectivity ranged in $39.5{\sim}60%$. The $CO_2$ selectivity in the PDC reactor was in range of $68.5{\sim}75.5%$.

  • Background: Cardiopulmonary bypass is an essential process to maintain circulation for saving life during the cardiac surgery, But it is a process in which systemic inflammation was evoked inevitably because of the exposure of blood to foreign surface. The injuries to distal organs during the cardiopulmonary bypass were resulted from systemic inflammation and the disturbances of micro-circulations in the organs. We designed this study to research the effects of leukocyte depletion from pump-oxygenator priming solution on the systemic inflammation, and the micro-circulation of gastric mucosa that is suggested by the gastric mucosal $CO_{2}$ partial pressure and acidity. Material and Method: The dogs were divided into three groups according to the different pump-oxygenator priming solutions; non-hemic crystalloid solution; leukocyte-depleted homologous blood; and non leukocyte-depleted homo-logous blood. Each priming solution group contained five dogs. In all three groups, 2 hours of cardiopulmonary bypass, and 4 consecutive hours of general anesthesia was maintained on the mechanical ventilation. Each dog was evaluated for the gastric mucosal pH, $CO_{2}$ partial Pressure, arterial pH, $CO_{2}$ partial pressure, the exhaled air $CO_{2}$ partial pressure and the level of IL-8 on before the cardiopulmonary bypass, 1 hour after the cardiopulmonary bypass, 2 hours after the cardiopulmonary bypass, 2 hours after the restoration of normal circulation, and 4 hours after the restoration of normal circulation after the cardiopulmonary bypass. The levels of IL-8 were measured with ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) technique. Result: 1. There were significant differences of gastric mucosal $CO_{2}$ partial pressure between the leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group and other two groups(vs non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group; P=0.02, vs non-hemic crystalloid solution group; P=0,01). 2. The gastric mucosal pH of leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group was significantly different from non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group (p=0.01). 3. The levels of IL-8, which examine the systemic inflammation, showed signi- ficantly better results in leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group and non-hemic crystalloid solution group than non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group (p=0.01, 0.01). Conclusion: Based upon these results, we concluded that the leukocyte depletion from the pump-oxygenator priming solution has a beneficial effects in reducing systemic inflammation and the preserving of gastric mucosal micro-circulation.

  • CXC chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2) is a prominent chemokine receptor on neutrophils. CXCR2 antagonist may reduce the neutrophil chemotaxis and alter the inflammatory response because the neutrophilic inflammation in the lung diseases is found to be largely regulated through CXCR2 receptor. Hence, in the present study, Topomer based Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Topomer CoMFA) was performed on a series of CXCR2 antagonist named pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile-6-alkyl derivatives. The best Topomer COMFA model was obtained with significant cross-validated correlation coefficient ($q^2$ = 0.487) and non cross-validated correlation coefficients ($r^2$ = 0.980). The model was evaluated with six external test compounds and its $r^2{_{pred}}$ was found to be 0.616. The steric and electrostatic contribution map show that presence of bulkier and electropositive group around cyclopropyl ring may contribute more for improving the biological activities of these compounds. The generated Topomer CoMFA model could be helpful for future design of novel and structurally related CXCR2 antagonists.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to promote sales of the renewable energy industry and to advance into the Southeast Asian market. Research design, data, and methodology - This study is to develop a highly efficient food waste treatment system for Southeast Asian renewable energy industry. The radiation treatment method was applied for this purpose. Results - To investigate effects of ionization on removal of non-degradable organic matter, the results from gamma irradiation and co-digestion process was compared to those from a co-digestion process. Based on the BMP test results, food wastes were oxidized by hydroxyl radicals, and the specific methane yield was 366 mL CH4/g VS. Methane composition was 82%. A WAS/food wastes co-digestion was developed for the treated of non-degradable organic matter in food wastes. The average efficiency of non-degradable organic matter were 92.2% using the food waste co-digestion. Conclusions - Performance of gamma irradiation and co-digestion process was superior to that of a co-digestion process (10-20%). This implies that food wastes can be high efficient co-digested by the gamma irradiation. It is believed that it will be possible to enter the Southeast Asian energy industry as a strategic technology in the overseas energy recovery industry.
