For potential application to quantum mechanical devices, nano-composite thin films, consisting of GaAs quantum dots dispersed in SiO$_2$ glass matrix, were fabricated and studied in terms of structural, chemical, and optical properties. In order to form crystalline GaAs quantum dots at room temperature, uniformly dispersed in $SiO_2$matrix, the composite films were made to consist of alternating layers of GaAs and $SiO_2$in the manner of a superlattice using RF magnetron sputter deposition. Among different film samples, nominal thickness of an individual GaAs layer was varied with a total GaAs volume fraction fixed. From images of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), the formation of GaAs quantum dots on SiO$_2$was shown to depend on GaAs nominal thickness. GaAs deposits were crystalline and GaAs compound-like chemically according to HRTEM and XPS analysis, respectively. From measurement of optical absorbance using a spectrophotometer, absorption edges were determined and compared among composite films of varying GaAs nominal thicknesses. A progressively larger shift of absorption edge was noticed toward a blue wavelength with decreasing GaAs nominal thickness, i.e. quantum dots size. Band gaps of the composite films were also determined from Tauc plots as well as from PL measurements, displaying a linear decrease with increasing GaAs nominal thickness.

A series of experimental work is carried out with the aim to understand the flexural performance of laminated glass (LG) beams using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and Ionoplast interlayers subjected to short term duration loads in the circumstance of elevated temperature. The study is based on a total of 42 laboratory tests conducted in ambient temperature ranging from $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The load duration is kept within 20 seconds. Through the tests, load-stress and load-deflection curves of the LG are established; appropriate analytical models for the LG are indentified; the effective thicknesses as well as the shear transfer coefficients of the LG are semi-empirically determined. The test results show that within the studied temperature range the bending stresses and deflections at mid-span of the LG develop linearly with respect to the applied loads. From $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ the flexural behavior of the PVB LG is found constantly between that of monolithic glass and layered glass having the same nominal thickness; the flexural behavior of the Ionoplast LG is equivalent to monolithic glass of the same nominal thickness until the temperature elevates up to $50^{\circ}C$. The test results reveal that in calculating the effective thicknesses of the PVB and Ionoplast LG, neglecting the shear capacities of the interlayers is uneconomic even when the ambient temperature is as high as $80^{\circ}C$. In the particular case of this study, the shear transfer coefficient of the PVB interlayer is found in a range from 0.62 to 0.14 while that of the Ionoplast interlayer is found in a range from 1.00 to 0.56 when the ambient temperature varies from $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$.
PURPOSES : This study primarily focused on evaluating the performance characteristics of 4.75-mm nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) asphalt mixtures for their more effective implementation to a layered flexible pavement system. METHODS : The full-scale pavements in the FDOT's accelerated pavement testing (APT) program, including 4.75-mm mixtures at the top with different thicknesses and asphalt binder types, were considered for the faster and more realistic evaluation of the rutting performance. The results of superpave indirect tensile (IDT) tests and hot-mix asphalt fracture mechanics (HMA-FM) based model predictions were used for cracking performance assessments. RESULTS : The results indicated that the rutting performance of pavement structures with 4.75-mm mixtures may not be as good as to those with the typical 12.5-mm mixtures, and pavement rutting was primarily confined to the top layer of 4.75-mm mixtures. This was likely due to the relatively higher mixture instability and lower shear resistance compared to 12.5-mm mixtures. The energy ratio (ER) and HMA-FM based model performance prediction results showed a potential benefit of 4.75-mm mixtures in enhanced cracking resistance. CONCLUSIONS : In relation to their implementation, the best use of 4.75-mm mixtures seem to be as a surface course for low-traffic-volume applications. These mixtures can also be properly used as a preservation treatment that does not necessarily last as long as 12.5-mm NMAS structural mixes. It is recommended that adequate thicknesses and binder types be considered for the proper application of a 4.75-mm mixture in asphalt pavements to effectively resist both rutting and cracking.
The application of short, fiber-reinforced polymer composite pipes has been increasing rapidly. A comprehensive review of the prior research reveals that the majority of the previously-reported studies have been conducted on the filament-wound composite pipes, and fewer studies have been reported on the mechanical behavior of short, randomly-oriented fiber composite pipes. On this basis, the main objective of this research endeavor is to investigate the mechanical behavior and failure modes of short, randomly-oriented glass-fiber composite pipes under three-point bending tests. To this end, an experimental study is performed in order to explore the load-bearing capacity, failure mechanism, and deformation performance of such pipes. Fourteen properly-instrumented composite pipe specimens with different diameters, thicknesses, lengths, and nominal pressures have been tested and also simulated using the finite element approach for verification purposes. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the diameter-to-thickness ratio, length-to-diameter ratio, and nominal pressure on the mechanical behavior and deformation performance of short, randomly-oriented glass-fiber composite pipes.

Experimental studies of the cylindrical sintered-copper wick heat pipes were carried out to investigate the capillary heat transfer characteristics. Six models of the sintered-copper wick heat pipes were manufactured and tested to evaluate the heat transport limitations and the thermal characteristics. Also the performance of the heat pipes was analyzed theoretically and compared with the test results. The heat pipe models are divided into two sintered-wick groups and the nominal particle sizes are $180{\mu}m$(wick #1) and $200{\mu}m$(wick #2) respectively The experimental results showed that, the porosity of wick #1 was higher than that of wick #2, and also the wick #1 was generally superior than the wick #2 for the heat transport capability. The maximum heat transport rates were increased as the wick thicknesses and the vapor temperatures were increased.
Veneers of two nominal thicknesses, 1.5 and 2.5mm, were rotary peeled from Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis). Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinei) and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) bolts unheated and heated in the water vat temperature of $66^{\circ}C$ by rising a final temperature at 10cm core of $60^{\circ}C$ to remain core diameter of 11.4cm. 1.5 and 2.5mm thick veneer cut from the heated Japanese larch were significantly thinner than those of the unheated bolt and 2.5mm thick veneer cut from the heated Dahurian larch were significantly thicker than that of the unheated bolt. 1.5mm thick Dahurian larch veneer and 1.5 and 2.5mm thick Radiata pine veneers showed insignificant difference between the unheated and heated bolts, respectively. Check distance on the loose side of 1.5mm thick veneer cut from the heated Radiata pine was significantly wider than that of the unheated bolt. However check distances on the loose side of 1.5 and 2.5mm thick Japanese larch and Dahurian larch veneers and 2.5mm thick Radiata pine veneers showed insignificant difference between the unheated and heated bolts. Also the depth of check on the loose side of three species showed insignificantly difference between the unheated and heated bolts. Arithmatic mean deviation($R_a$) and maximum height($R_{max}$) of the profile on the loose side of dried veneer by preheating the bolt compared with unheated bolts were different among apecies and between veneer thickness. The preheating treatment slightly affected qualities of these thin veneers such as 1.5 and 2.5mm. The yield of 2.5mm thick veneer from the heated radiata pine was significantly higher than that of the unheated bolt. However the yield of 2.5mm thick veneer for other two species and 1.5mm thick veneer for three species showed insignificant difference between the unheated and heated bolts. The yield of 2.5mm thick veneer for three species were higher than those of 1.5mm thick veneer. The average yields of green veneer of Japanese larch. Dahurian larch and Radiata pine were 57.1, 55.1 and 54.0 percent, respectively. Variables such as initial MC. drying time and veneer thickness had strong effect for Japanese larch veneer, less effect for Radiata pine veneer and nuch less effect on final MC for Dahurian larch veneer in jet drying. Correlation between the current MC and the drying time of Dahurian larch with low variation of initial MC was higher than those of Japanese larch and Radiata pine veneer with high variation of initial MC in high temperature drying. Thickness shrinkages of 2.5mm thick veneer for Japanese larch and Radiata pine were higher than those of 1.5mm thick veneers, but shrinkages of Dahurian larch veneer were similar between two nominal veneer thicknesses.

When designing an internal gear. the bending strength around pitch point as well as that at tooth root fillet should be considered because the bending stress around pitch point may occur as high as that at tooth root fillet. In this study, including stress state around pitch point, the bending strength (tensile side and compressive side) of internal gear tooth is investigated by the use of the finite element method(FEM) with regarding many influencing factors of cutter and gear geometries. Then, the critical sections around pitch point and at tooth root fillet are determined, and the simple formulae based on nominal stresses(bending, compressive, and shear) are derived for the calculations of actual stresses as the functions of tooth thicknesses and radii of curvatures of involute and fillet curve at those critical sections. The stresses calculated by the formulae agree well with those by the FEM. And the bending stresses around pitch point and at tooth root are easily estimated by the use of those formulae, therefore, those formulae are useful for the purpose of the design or the bending strength estimation of internal gear.

Recently, Fe/Si multilayered films (MLF) have been a focus of interest due to the strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling observed in such kind of MLF originates from the same nature as in the metal/metal MLF. In particular, a question of whether the spacer layer in the Fe/Si MLF is metallic or semiconducting is of interest. In spite of various experimental techniques envolved in the study, the chemical composition and the properties of the interfacial regions in the MLF exhibiting the AF coupling is still questionable. The nature of the AF coupling and the interfacial properties of Fe/Si MLF are investigated in this study. A series of Fe/Si MLF with a fixed nominal thickness of Fe(3nm) and a variable thickness of Sk(1.0-2.2nm) were deposited by RF-sputtering onto glass substrates at room temperature. The atomic structures and the actual sublayer thicknesses of the Fe/Si MLF are investigated by using x-ray diffraction. The magnetic-field dependence of the equatorial Kerr effect clearly shows an appearance of the AF coupling between Fe sublayers at tsi = 1.5 - 1.8 nm. the drastic discrepancies between the experimental magnetooptical (MO) and optical properties, and based on the assumption of sharp interfaces between Fe and Si sublayers leads to a conclusion that pure si is absent in the AF-coupled Fe/Si MLF. Introducing in the model nonmagnetic semiconducting FeSi alloy layers between Fe and Si sublayers or as spacer between pure Fe sublayers only slightly improves the agreement between model and experiment. A reasonable agreement between experimental and simulated MO spectra was reached with using the fitted optical properties for the spacer with a typical metallic type of behavior. The results of the magnetic properties measured by vibrating sample magnetometer and magnetic circular dichroism are also analyzed in connection with the MO and optical properties.
A single plate shear connection, or shear tab, is a very popular shear connection due to its merit in ease of construction and material economy. However, problems in understanding the connection behavior, both in terms of strength and ductility, have been well-documented. Suggestions or design model for single plate connections in AISC Design Manual have been altered several times, with the latest edition settling down to giving designers pre-calculated design strength tables if the connection details agree with given configurations. Results from many full-scale tests and finite element models in the past suggest that shear strength of a bolt group in single plate shear connections might be affected by yield strength of plate material; therefore, this research was aimed to investigate and clarify effects of plate yield strength and thickness on shear strength of the bolt group in the connections, including the validity of using a plate thickness/bolt diameter ratio ($t_p/d_b$) in design, by using finite element models. More than 20 models have been created by using ABAQUS program with 19.0- and 22.2-mm A325N bolts and A36 and Gr.50 plates with various thicknesses. Results demonstrated that increase of plate thickness or plate yield strength, with the $t_p/d_b$ ratio remained intact, could significantly reduce shear strength of the bolt group in the connection as much as 15 percent. Results also confirmed that the $t_p/d_b$ ratio is a valid indicator to be used for guaranteeing strength sufficiency. Because the actual ratio recommended by AISC Design Manual is $t_p/d_b$ + 1.6 (mm) for connections with a number of bolts less than six and plate yield strength in construction is normally higher than the nominal value used in design, it is proposed that shear strength of a bolt group in single plate connections with a number of bolts equal or greater than seven be reduced by 15 percent and the $t_p/d_b$ ratio be limited to 0.500.
This paper is to evaluate the fatigue strength of lap joints of materials applied to LNG carrier cargo containment of GAZ-TRANSPORT(GT) type, which was welded by manual and automatic TIG welding process. The thicknesses of lapped members were 1.5mm/1.5mm or 1.5mm/0.7mm in Invar to Invar joint, and 1.5mm/8.0mm in Invar to stainless steel joint, respectively. These lap joints were mainly applied to the membrance fabrication of GT-LNG carrier. Fatigue tests of Invar/Inar lap joints were conducted under the stress ratio R=0 at room temperature. The effect of mean stress and cumulative fatigue damage on the allowable stress of Invar lap joint was evaluated on the basis of test results. Fatigue test was also conducted on Inver/Stainless steel lap joints welded by automatic TIG process without filler metals. The fatigue test of the joint was carried out under the same conditions as those of Invar/invar lap joints. The fatigue strength of the joint welded without filler metal was comparable to those welded with filler metal quoted from reference. The fatigue strength of Invar/stainless steel lap joint was only dependent on the lap throat thickness, and not on the welding process. Based on test results, the applicability of TIG welding process without filler metal in Invar/stainless steel lap joint was reviewed by controlling welding variables to assure the valid throat thickness of lap joints.
