  • Image fusion is the process of combining multiple images of the same scene into a single fused image with application to many fields, such as remote sensing, computer vision, robotics, medical imaging and military affairs. The widely used image fusion rules that use wavelet transform have been based on a simple comparison with the activity measures of local windows such as mean and standard deviation. In this case, information features from the original images are excluded in the fusion image and distorted fusion images are obtained for noisy images. In this paper, we propose the use of a nonparametric squared ranks test on the quality of variance for two samples in order to overcome the influence of the noise and guarantee the homogeneity of the fused image. We evaluate the method both quantitatively and qualitatively for image fusion as well as compare it to some existing fusion methods. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is effective and provides satisfactory fusion results.

  • Most watermarking techniques insert watermarks into transform coefficients in the frequency domain because we can consider robust or imperceptible frequency bands against malicious attacks to remove them. However, parameterization of 3-D data is not easy because of irregular attribution of connectivity information, while 1-I) or 2-D data is regular. In this paper we propose a new watermarking scheme for 3-D polygonal mesh models in the DCT domain. After we generate triangle strips by traversing the 3-D model and transform its vertex coordinates into the DCT domain, watermark signals are inserted into mid-frequency bands of AC coefficients for robustness and imperceptibility. We demonstrate that our scheme is robust against additive random noise, the affine transformation, and geometry compression by the MPEG-4 SNHC standard.

  • At coverage boundaries of cellular systems including the recent WiBro standard which operate with full frequency reuse for increased spectral efficiency, interference signals from the base stations(BS) of adjacent cells degrade the receiver performance. In this paper, a detection method for multiple-antenna mobile stations(MS) is proposed for downlink performance improvement at coverage boundaries of cellular systems. For the performance verification, we obtain the probability density function(pdf) of the effective signal-to-interference and noise ratio(SINR) according to the variation of the interference signals from adjacent cells as well as the number of MS antennas, and calculate the transmission efficiency. We also verify the performance of proposed method with simulation results, to demonstrate a significant performance improvement is achieved over the maximal ratio combining(MRC) and spatial demultiplexing(SD) methods in terms of the effective SINR and the spectral efficiency.

  • This paper dealt with the deterioration characteristics and an on-line diagnosis equipment for SPDs (surge protective devices). An accelerated aging test was carried out using a $8/20{\mu}s$ standard lightning impulse current to analyze the changes of electrical characteristics and to propose the diagnostic parameters and the criterion for deterioration of ZnO varistor which is the core component of SPDs. Based on the experimental results, an on-line diagnosis equipment for SPD was fabricated, which can measure the total leakage current, reference and clamping voltage. The leakage current measurement circuit was designed using a low-noise amplifier and a clamp type ZCT. A linear controller, the leakage current measurement part and a HVDC were used in the measurement of reference voltage. The measurement circuit of clamping voltage consisted of a surge generator and a coupling circuit. In a calibration process, measurement error of the prototype equipment was less than 3%.

  • In this paper, we measured specific absorption rate (SAR) using characteristic variables such as flip angle, repetition time (TR) and echo time (TE) at magnetic resonance imaging. The subject was applied to same scan technique from body weight 10 kg to 90 kg, were measured for the average SAR and the peak SAR values according to the change of parameter. SAR with different body weight levels was not seen a significant change at TE but it increased in the larger flip angle and the shorter TR. SAR value was within the limits of human head acceptable standard and SNR in segmental body weights was not proportional to the increase of body weights. In conclusion, this study can be helpful for diagnosis by using appropriate parameters which obtained the various contrast and SNR.

  • In this paper, BER(Bit Error Ratio) performances of the TransferJet system, which is the standard of a close proximity inductive wireless communication system, are presented and analyzed. Comparing to other wireless communication systems, the TransferJet system has some advantages such as short communication range(i.e., high security in the wireless communication environments), fewer effects of multipath distortion, and higher transmission rate. In order to demodulate the received signal, either SC(Soft-decision Combining) or HC(Hard-decision Combining) can apply to the despreader and demodulator of the receiver. When the spreading factor is more than 4, the SC scheme approximately has a minimum signal-to-noise ratio gain of 2 dB over the HC scheme. Moreover, from simulation results, we can conclude that the quantization bits of 3 bits are an optimum value for the SC scheme in the TransferJet system since the 3-bit quantization achieves nearly the performance as that attained by double-precision floating-point.

  • In order to solve the floor impact sound problem in the upper and lower floors, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs also notifies the physical properties of the resilient material affecting the floor impact sound level. The dynamic modulus of elasticity and the loss factor before and after heating are most related to the floor impact noise, especially for the cushioning material. Therefore, in this study, the rate of change with respect to the dynamic modulus and loss factor with temperature change was examined by increasing $10^{\circ}C$ by $10^{\circ}C$ from the temperature condition of $70^{\circ}C$ specified in the standard. The dynamic modulus of elasticity and the loss modulus were measured by using the pulse excitation method for eight kinds of samples. The calculation method was calculated by the time series analysis method using the damped vibration waveform.

  • High-resolution satellite images are used in the fields of mapping, natural disaster forecasting, agriculture, ocean-based industries, infrastructure, and environment, and there is a progressive increase in the development and demand for the applications of high-resolution satellite images. Users of the satellite images desire accurate quality of the provided satellite images. Moreover, the distinguishability of each image captured by an actual satellite varies according to the atmospheric environment and solar angle at the captured region, the satellite velocity and capture angle, and the system noise. Hence , NIIRS must be measured for all captured images. There is a significant deficiency in professional human resources and time resources available to measure the NIIRS of few hundred images that are transmitted daily. Currently, NIIRS is measured every few months or even few years to assess the aging of the satellite as well as to verify and calibrate it [3]. Therefore, we develop an algorithm that can measure the national image interpretability rating scales (NIIRS) of a typical satellite image rather than an artificial target satellite image, in order to automatically assess its quality. In this study, the criteria for automatic edge region extraction are derived based on the previous works on manual edge region extraction [4][5], and consequently, we propose an algorithm that can extract the edge region. Moreover, RER and H are calculated from the extracted edge region for automatic edge region extraction. The average NIIRS value was measured to be 3.6342±0.15321 (2 standard deviations) from the automatic measurement experiment on a typical satellite image, which is similar to the result extracted from the artificial target.

  • Multi-view video coding (MVC) based on H.264/AVC encodes multiple views efficiently by using a prediction scheme that exploits inter-view correlation among multiple views. However, with the increase of the number of views and use of inter-view prediction among views, total encoding time will be increased in multiview video coding. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision using both MB(Macroblock)-based region segmentation information corresponding to each view in multiple views and global disparity vector among views in order to reduce encoding time. The proposed method achieves on average 40% reduction of total encoding time with the objective video quality degradation of about 0.04 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by using joint multi-view video model (JMVM) 4.0 that is the reference software of the multiview video coding standard.

  • To approximate the threshold of the fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) system, validation of the measurements is mandatory. Naturally, the system shows uncertainties due to measuring sensors - mostly thermocouples or RTDs - and due to repeatability. The uncertainty of a thermocouple comes from natural variation or a drift of the thermocouple measurement. Considering the natural variation behaves like zero-mean white noise, its natural variation can be characterized closely by the steady-state standard deviation. However, residuals between measurements and no-fault references in FDD systems show a statistical distribution with various uncertainties. In this paper, steady-state variations of measurement residuals were investigated by utilizing built-in temperature sensors in a heat pump for the model development and the final application.
