  • Noise generated from Construction site has been raised most civil complaints to 64.4 % among the environmental pollution in 2011. Therefore, local government recommends and prescribes that construction sites over a certain scale install sound level meter for noise monitoring. For example, Seoul has implemented a 24 hour noise monitoring system, with real time communication, to the large construction sites more than 10,000 $m^2$ from the end of August 2012. But it is difficult to use noise measurement data for the construction noise assessment, since the installation standards and technical specifications for construction noise monitoring system are not presented. In this paper, we proposed noise monitoring system improvement plan including technical specifications and installation standards using the investigating results of the problems of current noise monitoring system and the foreign cases.

  • Most of the blast pollution that causes complaints is noise and vibration. Hence, special attentions need to be paid to controlling the underwater noise in designing blasting for those areas. This study estimated underwater sound pressure using distance from blasting and charge per delay and underwater sound pressure level using the underwater sound pressure. To identify the validity of the estimated value, the study demonstrated the results at other areas and compared actual results with estimated results.

  • The purpose of this study to find out of the middle school students' knowledge, consciousness and behavior of the environmental problems. The sample of this study were 489 middle school students in Busan area. The collected data were statistically analized by using SPSS program. The major findings were as follows: 1. The level of middle school students' consciousness of environmental problems is 4.07 out of perpect 5. The highest was waste pollution(M=4.35), and the lowest was noise pollution(M=3.39). The level of middle school students' behavior of environmental problems is 3_49 out of perpect 5, which is somewhat lower than the consciousness of environmental problems. The highest was air pollution(M=4.11), and the lowest was water pollution(M=3.23). 2. The middle school students' consciousness and behavior of environmental problems showed passive corelation$(P<.01)$ : The higher the consciousness of environmental problems is better the behavior of environmental problems. 3. The level of middle school students' knowledge of environmental problems showed notable difference with sex$(P<.01)$ and a school year$(P<.05)$.

  • Underwater impulsive sound such as underwater blasting noise, piling noise and stone breaking hammer affects marine animal hearing response and organs. This study describes the characteristics of various impulsive noise from waterfront construction site and their effect on fish. Time constant, peak pressure, energy and SEL(sound exposure level) of four different underwater impulsive sounds are quantified. Auditory and non-auditory tissue damage ranges are derived by comparing their quantities to the exposure criteria for fish. Damage ranges of auditory tissue and non-auditory tissue of underwater boring blast of 150 kg of charge, are about 100 m and 300 m, respectively. Other three impulsive sounds also gives damage effects but less than that of underwater boring blast.

  • The population of House sparrow (Passer domesticus), once a very common bird, has declined markedly in most parts of the world including India. Sparrows were distributed widely in the district Hoogly, West Bengal, India. However over the past few decades, they became not so common in this part of the wo rld. A study has been conductedto establish the database for their current population and to assess the possible causes of their decline at Bandel ($22^{\circ}$52'22''N/$88^{\circ}$22'53''E) placed beside the river Hoogly from September 2008 to May 2009. After prolonged searching, a relatively dense population of sparrow (total subject 270) was found in busy areas of railway station and a nearby market in Bandel. The behavior of these birds was studied extensively from early morning to late night. The noise level of the area varied from 35 to 95 dB with an average of 70.6 dB from 04:30 am-10:30 pm, IST. It was also observed that the sparrows took rest on the site of the tree where the illumination level was low (30-45 lux). Sparrows residing at the Bandel station are habituated with the loud noise, being undisturbed by passing trains. Thus, it can be concluded that in spite of heavy noise of trains, crowdy travelers, and lack of nest sites, they remain at the station because of availability of food in the nearby roadside market. Based on this observation, sound pollution and availability of food are not responsible for their decline.

  • Noise pollution from a high speed train has been a serious social issue nowadays. Especially when a train speed exceeds 350 km/hr, an aerodynamic noise level has been known to be increased drastically. In this paper, explained were the studies on the noise reduction and engineering approaches to estimate and analyze influences of noise. Based on this study, it is estimated to apply results to development of trains and expected to accomplish futuristic technology by devising noise prediction of high speed EMU and measures to reduce noise on a design phase.

  • As a compression wave is emitted from a duct, an impulsive wave generates and causes an impulsive noise that is at present a serious environmental noise pollution. In order to clarify the acoustic characteristics of the noise and to reduce their pressure levels, a series of model experiments were conducted on the impulsive waves emitted from an open end of a shock tube. The impulsive waves with various intensities were obtained by controlling the operation pressure ratio of the shock tube. Various kinds of silencers such as the exit boxes with baffle plates, were applied to the duct exit to reduce the impulsive noises. The effects of geometry of silencers and shock Mach number on the noise reduction were clarified. From the measurements of sound pressure level, it was found that installing the baffle plate into the exit box is effective in lowering the noise level at far fields, and that the recommendable geometries of silencer are L/D=1, H/D=1 and H/D=0.75.

  • We introduce a new visible light communication (VLC) method in which three-level return-to-zero (RZ) modulation is used for flicker-free transmission. In the VLC transmitter, the three-level RZ modulation ensures that the average optical power is constant; thus, a flicker-free light-emitting diode (LED) light is achieved. In the VLC receiver, a resistor-capacitor high-pass filter is used for generating spike signals, which are used for data recovery while eliminating the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps. In transmission experiments, we applied this method for wireless transmission of an air quality sensor message using the visible light of an LED array. This configuration is useful for the construction of indoor wireless sensor networks for air pollution monitoring using LED lights.

  • Traffic noise estimation models are useful in evaluation of the noise pollution in current circumstances. They are helpful tools for design and planning new roads and highways. Measurement of average traffic noise level is possible when traffic speed and volume are known. The objective of this study was to devise a model for prediction of highway traffic noise levels based on current traffic variables in Iran. The design of this model was to take the impact of traffic congestion into consideration and to be field tested. This study is a library research augmented by field study conducted on Saeedi Highway located south west of Tehran. The period for the field study lasted 5 days from 7-12 February, 2013. This study examined liner and non-liner methods in formulation of its model. Liner method without a fixed coefficient was the best fit for the intended model. The proposed model can serve as a decision making tool to estimate the impact of key influential factors on sound pressure levels in urban areas in Iran.

  • Noise and vibration due to railway traffic are major causes of environmental pollution in the city. In course of judging, assessing and coping with the problem, it becomes imperative to predict the vibration level induced by railway traffic passing through downtown in the city. The vibration due to railway traffic is transferred to the neighbouring buildings through the ground. In this study, as a method predicting vibration level of the buildings near railway, a vibration transfer formula is suggested. This formula is used to calculate vibration level occuring at the bottom of the neighbouring buildings, which are located at a certain distance from railway.
