  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to find an effective medical device to detect cold sensation of hands. Methods: Patients with cold sensation of hands (N=42) were recruited in July 2013. We surveyed patients’ general characteristics, severity of cold sensation, body temperature in Nogung (PC8) and Hyeopbaek (LU4) measured with a digital thermometer, digital infrared thermal imaging, and pulse wave velocity. Results: The relation between severity of cold sensation and temperature in Nogung (PC8) and Hyeopbaek (LU4) was statistically significant. The results showed a higher correlation of severity of cold sensation with Nogung (PC9) than with Hyeopback (LU4) temperature. No other indices were statistical significant. Conclusions: Measuring the Nogung (PC9) temperature is most reasonable for assessing the severity of cold sensation of hands. To generalize this result, however, a large-scale study is warranted.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze an effect of medical Qigong therapy using Dong Chu Chim (DCC) which was invented by "Dongchu Han Medicine Institute", by measuring HRV. We compared effects of DCC with non-treatment, filiform acupuncture and filiform acupuncture with natural abdominal breathing. Methods : 1. The authors stimulated Nogung (PC8) of 26 normal adults by using DCC or filiform acupuncture in turn. 2. The natural abdominal breathing has been carried comfortably with consciousness in the lower abdomen. 3. HRV was measured for 5 minutes, three times (pre-treatment, during-treatment and post-treatment). Results and Conclusions : From this study, it seems that the stimulus of DCC, filiform acupuncture, filiform acupuncture with natural abdominal breathing can all affect the autonomic nervous system and control the balance of that. But there were not significant differences between these stimulus groups and the non-treatment group. Therefore, we suggest additional studies about the effect of DCC in the future.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at the PC8 on normal human beings by using power spectral analysis. Methods : EEG (Electroencephalogram) power spectrum exhibits site-specific and state-related differences in specific frequency bands. In this study, power spectrum was used as a measure of complexity. 32 channels EEG study was carried out in 20 subjects (20 males; age=26.8 years old). Results : In ${\alpha}(alpha)$ band, the power values at F7, F8, P3 channels(p<0.05) during the $PC_8-acupoint$ treatment significantly decreased. In ${\beta}(beta)$ band, the power values at F4, F8, P3 channels(P<0.05) during the PC8-acupoint treatment significantly decreased. In ${\delta}(delta)$ band, the power values at F7, F8, P3 Po2 channels(p<0.05) during the $PC_8-acupoint$ treatment significantly decreased. In ${\theta}(theta)$ band, the power values at F7, Fz, F4 F8, FTC1, FTC2, CP2, TT2, P3, Pz, Po2 channels(p<0.05) during the PC8-acupoint treatment significantly decreased. Conclusions : This results suggest that Electroacupuncture at the PC8 mostly affect the change on theta(11 channels) bands.

  • Objective : There are controversial opinions on the location of PC8 (Nogung). The one is to localize the point between the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bone, the other is to localize the point between the 3rd and 4th metacarpal bone. The study was performed to provide an experimental evidence to standardize the location of PC8 point. Methods : We employed 30 healthy adults evenly in sex. To identify the location of PC8 in the hand, we took X-ray photograph in both hands of participants. Thin layer of leads were pasted on to PC7 and tip of middle finger prior to take X-ray photograph. The line connecting two points corresponding to the leads in X-ray film was read by a radiologist to decide that the line passes which side between the 2nd metacarpal space and the 3rd one. Results and Conclusions: The line passed the 3rd metacarpal space in 49 cases out of 60 hands (82 %). Data suggest that PC8 could be localized at the point between the 3rd and 4th metacarpal bone.

  • This study aims to compare nail-fold capillary blood velocity (CBV) according to the presence or absence of cold hypersensitivity in the hands (CHH) using nail-fold capillaroscopy under cold stress conditions. Eleven participants were taken from the cohort study for observing long-term health status of the faculty of Semyung university. Seven of the participants displayed CHH while four showed signs of non-CHH. CBV between 0 and 60 seconds (S1) and between 240 and 300 seconds (S2) was measured under cold stress for 5 minutes, respectively, and the average value was used to compare non-CHH group and CHH group. Body mass index, Nogung (PC8) temperature and temperature difference between Nogung (PC8) and Hyeopbaek (LU4) were significantly lower in CHH group compared to non-CHH group. The S2-S1 CBV difference was negatively correlated with PC8 temperature and PC8-LU4 temperature, and positively correlated with cold pattern score and cold hypersensitivity visual analog scale. The CHH group had a lower CBV overall than non-CHH group, and the S2-S1 CBV difference was significantly higher in the CHH group than in non-CHH group. This study suggests that CBV measured by nail-fold capillarosopy might be a useful indicator of cold hypersensitivity properties.
