  • The effect of rare earth elements (R.E)(from 0.0 to 0.04%) on the microstructure formation and mechanical properties of thin-wall ductile iron castings were investigated. Tensile strength and hardness were decreased with an addition of up to 0.03% rare-earth elements. After addition of more than 0.03%, those were increased. Graphite nodule sizes were the finest, nodule count was the highst regardless of thickness and volume fraction of ferrite was the largest when that was 0.02%. However, the nodule count was decreased with increasing R.E. Futhermore. nodule size increased with increasing thickness and the volume fraction of ferrite decreased as that was increased. Nodularity was increased regardless of the thickness as that was increased. The castings of minium thickness up to 3 mm was possible without the formation of chill.

  • The effects of section size and melt holding time on the mechanical properties and microstructure of high silicon ductile cast iron were investigated. The strength, elongation and hardness of the test specimen with smaller cross-section were higher than those with larger one. The nodule count and volume fraction of pearlite of the former were higher than those of the latter. The mechanical properties decreased with increased melt holding time before pouring. Nodularity and nodule count decreased and the volume fraction of pearlite rather slightly increased with it.

  • The present study reports a human case of cutaneous gnathostomiasis with recurrent migratory nodule and persistent eosinophilia in China. A 52-year-old woman from Henan Province, central China, presented with recurrent migratory reddish swelling and subcutaneous nodule in the left upper arm and on the back for 3 months. Blood examination showed eosinophila (21.2%), and anti-sparganum antibodies were positive. Skin biopsy of the lesion and histopathological examinations revealed dermal infiltrates of eosinophils but did not show any parasites. Thus, the patient was first diagnosed as sparganosis; however, new migratory swellings occurred after treatment with praziquantel for 3 days. On further inquiring, she recalled having eaten undercooked eels and specific antibodies to the larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum were detected. The patient was definitely diagnosed as cutaneous gnathostomiasis caused by Gnathostoma sp. and treated with albendazole (1,000 mg/day) for 15 days, and the subsequent papule and blister developed after the treatment. After 1 month, laboratory findings indicated a reduced eosinophil count (3.3%). At her final follow-up 18 months later, the patient had no further symptoms and anti-Gnathostoma antibodies became negative. Conclusively, the present study is the first report on a human case of cutaneous gnathostomiasis in Henan Province, China, based on the past history (eating undercooked eels), clinical manifestations (migratory subcutaneous nodule and persistent eosinophilia), and a serological finding (positive for specific anti-Gnathostoma antibodies).

  • It is very important to obtain gray and ductile cast irons with completely pearlitic structure by addition more economical alloying elements. In this study, 9 melts of gray iron and 5 melts of Mg-treated ductile cast iron were made according to Sb content (0-0.08% Sb). Each melt were casted to ${\phi}20mm$ test bars in sand mold under the same condition and inspected microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. The results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. It is confirmed that Sb should be an economical, simple and useful additive for avoiding ferrite in gray and even in ductile cast irons. 2. For gray cast iron, the recommended ladle addition of metallic Sb amounts to 0.05%. At these levels, Sb has no detrimental influence on the mechanical properties of gray cast irons, which are normally modified according to their pearlite content without increasing the chilling tendency. 3. Despite its adverse influence on graphite shape in ductile iron, Sb can be used as a pearlite stabilizing alloying element even in the case of Mg - treated iron. The quantity to be added does not exceed 0.04% in the case of thinwalled castings. 4. The nodule count is increased very much and the shape of graphite particles become remarkably spheroidal. The matrix may be fully pearlitized, except for thin - walled castings, because the high nodule count results inevitably in some ferrite. 5. The $Ac_1$ and pearlite decomposition temperature are rised in accordance with increasing of additive Sb amount.

  • Background: To determine the effect of essential oil obtained from a traditionally used medicinal plant Tridax procumbens L, on lung metastasis developed by B16F-10 melanoma cells in C57BL/6 mice. Materials and Methods: Parameters studied were toxicity, lung tumor nodule count, histopathological features, tumor directed capillary vessel formation, apoptosis and expression levels of $P^{53}$ and caspase-3 proteins. Results: In vitro the MTT assay showed cytotoxicity was found to be high as 70.2% of cancer cell death within 24hrs for $50{\mu}g$. In vivo oil treatment significantly inhibited tumor nodule formation by 71.7% when compared with untreated mice. Formation of tumor directed new blood vessels was also found to be inhibited to about 39.5%. TUNEL assays also demonstrated a significant increase in the number of apoptotic positive cells after the treatment. $P^{53}$ and caspase-3 expression was also found to be greater in the essential oil treated group than the normal and cancer group. Conclusions: The present investigation showed significant effects of the essential oil of Tridax procumbens L in preventing lung metastasis by B16F-10 cell line in C57BL/6 mice. Its specific preventive effect on tumor directed angiogenesis and inducing effect on apoptosis warrant further studies at the molecular level to validate the significance of Tridax procumbens L for anticancer therapy.

  • Various test specimens were prepared by austempering low alloyed Mo-Ni-Cu ductile iron blocks of high graphite nodule count at 270, 320 or $370^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3 or 9hrs. Tensile test, CVN impact test and plane-strain fracture toughness test(compact tension specimen of 50mm W) were done for each heat treatment condition at room temperature. X-ray diffractometer and optical microscope were used to investigate the change of microstructure and relationships between microstructure and test results. The highest retained austenite volume percent at each austempering temperature was corresponded to the highest mechanical property. The highest elongation value of 17%, U.T.S. value of 1,600 MPa or $K_{IC}$ value of 90MPa${\surd}$m were reached at each optimum condition. The best heat treatment condition for fracture toughness were 3hrs' holding time combined with the austempering temperature of 270 and $320^{\circ}C$, and 1hr's of $370^{\circ}C$.

  • Ductile cast iron is widely used for many automotive components due to its high wear resistance and fatigue resistance in addition to the low cost of fabrication. The improvement of wear resistance and fatigue properties is key to the life time extension and performance increase of the automobile parts. Surface nanocrystallization is a very efficient way of improving the performance of materials including the wear- and fatigue-resistance. Shot peening treatment, as one of the popular and economic surface modification methods, has been widely applied to various materials. In this study, ductile cast iron specimens were ultrasonic shot peening (USP) treated for 5 to 30 min using different ball size. The microstructures were then microscopically analyzed for determination of the microstructural evolution. After the USP treatment, the hardness of pearlite and ferrite increased, in which ball size is more effective than treatment time. With USP treatment, the graphite nodule count near the surface was decreased with grain refinement. The lager balls resulted in an increased deformation, whereas the smaller balls induced more homogenously refined grains in the deformation layer. In addition, formation of nanoparticles was formed in the surface layer upon USP.

  • The characterestics of high Si-high Mo ductile cast iron, high Si-high Mo C.V. cast iron and Ni-resist cast iron were compared and evaluated. The nodule count of the last one was lower and the nodularity was higher than those for the first one, respectively. The first two had ferritic matrices with small amounts of molybdenum carbides. The first one had the highest tensile strength and the last one the lowest elongation. This had the highest high temperature strength and that of the second one was greatly increased from the room temperature strength. The volumes of the first two were decreased during cooling and that of the last one changed little. The thermal expansion coefficient of the last one was the highest and the first one the lowest. During high temperature oxidation, even though the volume of the first one was increased, the weight was decreased and the volume and weight of the second one were increased. The change of the increased weight of the last one was more than that of thickness.
