The aimed of the study was to investigate the referral rate of hearing screening for girls and boys senior high school in Gyeongsan and to consider the need for hearing screening. 359-girl and 205-boy were participated. Hearing screening was conducted tympanogram, automated otoacoustic emission(AOAE). Final referral rate was observed 9 girl (2.5%) and 19 boy (9.268%), respectively. There was no differences between boys and girls in tympanogram and AOAE. In conclusion, hearing screening for senior high school students needs to conduct tympanometry in order to screen hearing loss which is difficult to check through pure tone screening regardless of development of the Eustachian tube, and we need to make an effort to lower the false positive results.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of psycho-social factors on smoking especially the impact of a social support and stress on smoking among boy's high school students. Methods: This study was conducted by administering a questionnaire to 442 boys' high school students living in Deajeon, Korea. This data were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package using t-test and logistic regression. Major findings of this study are as follows: Results: 1. Analysis of the relationship of smoking, stress and social support: The relationship between stress and smoking and between friend's support and smoking had a positive correlation. But the relationship between parents' support and smoking and between teacher's support and smoking had a negative correlation. 2. Multiple logistic analysis of the impact of stress, social support and general characteristics on smoking: The relationship between stress and smoking had a positive correlation as social support and general characteristics were controlled. In contrast, the relationship between social support -parents', friend's, teacher's support- and smoking had no significant correlations as stress and general characteristics were controlled. The risk factors of smoking of boy's high school students were smoking friends, drinking, a type of school, pocket money per month, and stress. And the most powerful predictor of smoking was smoking friends(OR=12.35). Conclusions: The results showed that the variables affecting mainly on smoking were the personal background -smoking friends, drinking, a type of school, pocket money per month- and stress. Therefore, these findings give useful information for constructing a program against smoking or educating about smoking.

Point mutations in the human cardiac homeobox gene NKX2.5 are associated with familial atrial septal defect (ASD), atrioventricular (AV) conduction disturbance, as well as sudden cardiac death. To date, more than 60 NKX2.5 mutations have been documented, but there are no reports in Korea. We are reporting the first Korean family with ASD and AV block associated with a novel mutation in the NKX2.5 coding region. A 9-year-old boy presented with a slow and irregular pulse, and was diagnosed with secundum ASD and first degree AV block. The boy's father, who had a history of ASD correction surgery, presented with second degree AV block and atrial fibrillation. The boy's brother was also found to have secundum ASD and first degree AV block. There were two sudden deaths in the family. Genetic testing revealed a novel mutation of NKX2.5 in all affected members of the family.

This study was not intended to analyze out the realities of the safety accidents in school. The purpose of this study was to find out the personality of elementary school students in 6th grade and analyze the relationship between the personality of elementary school students and the safety accidents in the school. We made a visit 12 elementary school personally in the B city of Gyeonggi Province and gave out 552 questionaries in order to accomplish the purpose of this study. And we analyzed the 501 answer data except the unfittable data 51 sheets-in case of no answer or untruthfulness. The inspection of the personality used the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) and the questionnaires of the safety accidents in the school were reorganized of the questionnaires which were used in Chun-Ok, Joen(1997) and One-Yong, Kim(1999)'s study to correspond with our purpose of study. Answer sheets were gone through the t and x2 test by using the program of SPPS. First, elementary school students are in the formative period in the life of a man. So many students's personality was in the middle group rather than in high and low group. In regard of the distintion between the boy students and the girl students, the boy students had higher score in Psychoticism(P) but the girl students had higher score in Neutroticism(N). And Lie(L) was showing a little more score in the girl students. Second, there was significant difference in the investigation of safety accidents in school according to sex distinction. 1) Comparing the boy students and the girl students, the rate of accidents was higher in boy rather than girl. And there was significant difference. 2) Comparing the grade of the school, the rate of accidents was higher in upper grade than lower grade both girls and boys. 3) In the kind of accidents, the traumatic Injuries were very popular and the next were contusions. There was significant difference in the traumatic injury and nosebleed. 4) The results of injured parts showed that the injuries of foot, leg, hand, arm hold a large majority. And there was a significant difference in head, face, foot, leg and etc. 5) Most accidents broke out during the break time and then accidents happened after school were the next. The flowings were lunch time and class time. There was a significant difference in accidents happened during the class, break time and lunch time. 6) Comparing the subjects, the most accidents broke out in the class of physics. 7) Among the cause of accidents, one's own carelessness was showing the highest rate. There was a significant distintion in the fight and game. 8) The safety accidents took place most in playground, and there was a significant difference. 9) Being slight wound was showing almost in the degrees of damage. And there was a significant difference. Third, the boy students were not showing the significant difference in relation to the personality, the frequency of accidents and the degrees of damage. But the girl students were showing the significant difference in relation to the Extraversion-Introversion(E) and the frequency of accidents. And there were a significant difference between E and N. Also they were showing the intense damages.
Due to the remarkable changes in the early twentieth century, the new invention and technology impacted peoples' everyday lives and people started to use the word, modern, to apply specifically to what pertained to present times and to designate a movement in what was new and not old-fashioned-a condition of newness. In the present day, however, the fantastic cultural changes of a century ago have now become commonplace, and what was once considered radically new is no longer a reason to marvel. This paper considers what it mean to be modern, once the new is no longer new. This question seems to remain as complicated and inappropriate to ponder because the consideration and impact of modernity cannot simply end with the end of an era. This paper investigates how the interconnected nature of popular culture provides apt illustrations to reveal the ambivalent nature of modernity and postmodernity. In doing so, first of all, this paper pays attentions to the notion of modernity and popular culture which emerged together in the early twentieth century when technology and mass consumer culture were promoted over the world. Also, it examines how popular culture represents a complex of mutually-interdependent perspectives and values that influence society and its institutions in various ways as the image of modernity continues to build in a postmodern era. That is, popular culture is identified as a large amount of intertextuality or collective experiences due to its intermingling of complementary distribution sources and techonology. Thus, this paper explores that popular culture devotes itself other images or narratives instead of referring to the real world and its output revisits the contemporary or past times in other places, being a means to produce and reproduce the accumulated images of the modern which shapes ceaseless simulacra of modernity over complexities of modernity. In order to find a critical juncture of the complex networks of modernity and popular culture, this paper considers two places, Chicago and Gyeongsung in the 1920s and 1930s in which the rapid modern experience took place and the modern movement forced the two societies to join the mass consumer culture whether willingly or not. Next, this paper considers two movies released in 2002 and 2008 that exemplify the complexities of modernity in Chicago and Gyeongung of the 1920s and 30s: Chicago and Modern Boy. Both films have common themes of the 1920s and 30s such as violence, adultery, femme fatal, and criminal themes with the forms of musical, dance, drama, and romance. Through the textual analysis of both Chicago and Modern Boy, two films are compared in observing the similar and different ways in which two films deal with the theme of modernity when they are represented from the contemporary perspectives. More specifically, this paper questions how modernity is present in contemporary cultural forms such as commercial and hybrid genre films; and how these movies create a new image of modern by embodying the double coding. Ultimately, this paper aims at realizing the paradox of double edged modernity and its ongoing discourse that controls people's consciousness through the medium of popular culture.
Although juvenile nephronophthisis(NPHP) is one of the most frequent genetic causes of chronic renal failure, it has very rarely been reported in Korean children. Most NPHP patients are found to have chronic renal failure, since there are no distinct clinical symptoms for NPHP except polydipsia, polyuria and enuresis in the early stage of disease. Ten percent of NPHP patients manifest retinitis pigmentosa, called $Senior-L\ddot{o}ken$ syndrome. We experienced 2 cases of $Senior-L\ddot{o}ken$ syndrome that occurred in siblings(a 10 year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl) who were diagnosed with Leber's amaurosis. They were found to have severe renal impairment without polydipsia and polyuria. However, no large homogenous deletion of the NPHPI(2q13) gene was not identified in these patients. We report here on these cases and we review the literature to emphasize the association between Leber's amaurosis and the development of chronic renal failure.
Perianal fistulizing diseases, namely perianal fistulas and/or abscesses, are well-known complications of Crohn's disease (CD). These are known to develop more frequently in Asian children with CD, especially in the early stages of the disease course. Approximately half of the pediatric CD cases in Korea present with perianal fistulizing diseases at diagnosis. We report a rare case of a 12-year-old boy with CD with an incidental discovery of a perianal abscess on pelvic magnetic resonance imaging during CD diagnosis. No symptoms or signs of perianal fistulizing disease were identified. The early diagnosis of the perianal abscess enabled timely and effective treatment. Considering the high incidence of concomitant perianal CD in Korean children at diagnosis, perianal imaging may be useful and should be considered during diagnostic evaluation, even in patients with no subjective or objective findings indicating perianal CD.
