To establish N fertilizer recommendation method based on nitrate content of the soil for the Chinese cabbage grown in the plastic film house. Chinese cabbage was grown in the pots containing the plastic film house soils with various levels of $NO_3{^-}-N$ and different levels of fertilizer N. The nitrate nitrogen showed the positive correlation with nitrogen uptake amount by plant and the negative correlation with fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency of plant. The content of nitrate nitrogen in soil for maximum yield of Chinese cabbage was 310 mg/kg. An equation for the recommendation of fertilizer N for Chinese cabbage based on $NO_3{^-}-N$ in the soil was suggested.
To improve the existing nitrogen recommendation method based on chemical properties of soils and to establish new recommendation rates of nitrogen fertilizer due to different types of soils, the application rates of nitrogen fertilizer were examined in different soils of 12 experimental rice paddy fields. The application rates of nitrogen fertilizer estimated by soil-testing were higher than the rates of nitrogen standard recommendation that has been used. The application rates for minimum rice productivity ranged from a low of 168 kg/10a in sandy soil to a high of 315 kg/10a in saline soil. Amounts of nitrogen absorption in rice were proportional to the application amounts of nitrogen fertilizer in soils. Nitrogen use efficiency was the highest, 36.7%, in immatured paddy field and it was inversely proportional to the application amounts of nitrogen. the rice tasty value was the highest in the soils without nitrogen application, and also it was the lowest in the saline soils with or without nitrogen application. As comparing with the nitrogen application rates obtained by the existing nitrogen recommendation method, optimal nitrogen application rates estimated by the standardization of nitrogen application efficiency rate, environmental index, and rice quality were 1.0 fold in the well adapted soil and sandy soil fields, 0.92 fold in the immatured soil field, and 0.83 fold in the saline soil field.
To find out the optimum nitrogen fertilization levels for the leafy vegetables in volcanic ash soils of Cheju island, fertilization effects on chinese cabbage chinese and cabbage were investigated through pot and field experiments. In pot experiment conducted with two volcanic ash soils of Cheju island, optimum rates of nitrogen fertilizer was ranged from 294 to $331kg\;ha^{-1}$ for chinese cabbage. At field experiment with one volcanic soil, the optimum N fertilizer was $331kg\;ha^{-1}$. On the basis of soil organic matters, fertilizer recommendation formula for cabbage, could be established by using 1.03 of comparison factors (F) compared with chinese cabbage : y=344.54-0.285x for chines cabbage, y= 354.88-0.294x for cabbage, where y is the recommendation amount of nitrogen fertilizer with x g $kg^{-1}$ of organic matter in soil. Actual optimum rate of nitrogen fertilizer for chinese cabbage under field condition was much more similar to the value caluculated by the revised nitrogen recommendation formula than the amount of nitrogen fertilizer recommended by the current formula in volcanic ash soil.
To establish N fertilizer recommended scheme for the Chinese cabbage cultivation in green house based on the soil test of nitrate nitrogen, relationship among the content of soil nitrate and fertilizer effects and fertilizer N use efficiency were investigated from nine soils which differed amount of nitrate nitrogen from $14mg\;kg^{-1}$ to$226mg\;kg^{-1}$. The amount of nitrate nitrogen in soil showed a positive correlation with the dry weight of chinese cabbage in the plot of no fertilization. When the fertilizer effects were calculated by difference between the plots of fertilization and no fertilization in the dry weight and the amount of N uptake, a negative correlation was obtained between the amount of nitrate nitrogen in soils and the fertilizer effects. There was also a negative correlation between the amount of nitrate nitrogen in soils and fertilizer use efficiency. Recommendation of application rate of nitrogen fertilizer based on content of $NO_3-N$ in soils was evaluated by the regression equation among the content of soil nitrate, fertilizer effects and fertilizer N use efficiency. Incase the content of $NO_3-N$ nitrogen in soil is more than $200mg\;kg^{-1}$, No N fertilization is recommended; However, The standard N fertilization($320kg\;ha^{-1}$) is recommended for the soils with less than $50mg\;kg^{-1}$. For the soils ranged from $50mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $200mg\;kg^{-1}$ in the amount of nitrate nitrogen, an equation has been developed in order to calculate the recommended amount of fertilizer N.

This study was conducted to investigate investigated the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on nitrate concentration in soil solution and to determine the relationship between yield and nitrate concentration in soil solution for cucumber cultivation under plastic film house. Nitrogen as urea was applied at rates of 0, 120, 240, 360, and $480kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ as an additional fertilizer by trickle irrigation during cucumber cultivation. Monitoring of nitrate concentration in soil solution was investigated using porous cups at 25 cm depth under soil surface. Nitrate concentration in soil solution increased with increasing the rate of additional nitrogen. Correlation coefficient between EC value and nitrate concentration was positive in soil and soil solution (p<0.05). An additional nitrogen of about $300kg\;ha^{-1}$ was shown the highest yield of cucumber, and improved yield by 5% compared to N recommendation of $240kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$. The highest yield was determined at nitrate concentration of $82mg\;L^{-1}$ in soil solution by regression equation ($Y=74.2+0.73X+0.000504X^2$, $R^2=0.629^*$). These results means indicate that nitrate concentration in soil solution would be useful method to rapid determination for additional nitrogen during cucumber cultivation under plastic film house.

An estimation of the requirement of minerals based on growth stage and cropping pattern is very important for greenhouse zucchini. This study was performed at farmer's field which was applied with a fertigation system and a semi-forcing cultivation from Feb. to July in 2014, and nitrogen levels were set up with x0.5, x0.75, x1.0 and x1.5 of the NO3-N-based soil-testing recommendation for zucchini cultivation. Top dressing of nitrogen (basal : top = 4 : 6) and potassium (basal : top = 3 : 7) was applied with an interval of every two weeks from two and six weeks after transplanting, respectively, and phosphorus was totally supplied with basal dressing. The nitrogen uptake was the order of x1.0, x0.75, x1.5 and x0.5, phosphorus, x1.0, x0.75, x0.5 and x1.5, and potassium, x0.75, x1.0, x1.5 and x0.5. From these results, it was suggested that highest mineral uptake could be reached between x0.75 and x1.0 of the NO3-N-based soil-testing recommendation. In conclusion, nutrient management based on the growth stage was proven to be better method for favorable growth and yield of zucchini.
In order to improve a soil test-based fertilization model for nitrogen, the Mitscherlich-Baule-Spillman equation modified by Bray and his coworkers was introduced and tested for its possibility of application. The coefficients $C_1$ and $C_2$ in the equation A were calculated by applying 10 pot experimental results done by the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. Then, a regression(B) between C_1 and x, the fertilizer level was estimated. log(Ymax-Y) = logYmax-$C_1x-C_2b$ (A) where Ymax : maximum yield. Y : yield without or with a limited amount of fertilizer applied, x : application level of fertilizer, b : content of a nutrient in soil, $C_1$ and $C_2$ : coefficients of x and b, respectively. log(0.05)=$-C_1x-C_2b$ (B) Fertilizer requirement calculated by the equation B was significantly correlated with the real level of fertilizer applied for 95 percentage of the maximum yield. A more extensive and precise study on $C_1$ and $C_2$ in the equation A in expected to improve significantly the fitness of soil analysis to the fertilizer recommendation.

The Project supporting organic fertilizer started in 1999 as a national policy. In farmhouse, over application of mixed organic compound fertilizer(OC) caused salt accumulation in plastic film house soil. To replace inorganic fertilizer with OC fertilizer, this study was investigated the effect of OC application on yield and soil chemical properties for lettuce cultivation in plastic film house. The OC fertilizer was applied at 50(OC50+N50), 100(OC100), and 150(OC150) % level of the basal amount of nitrogen fertilizer in soil testing recommendation. And these were compared to NPK(nitrogen, phosphat, and potash fertilizer) and PK treatment. The yield of lettuce in OC100 was similar to that of NPK treatment. In OC 50, 100 and 150 treatments, pH had a tendency to increase than that of NPK treatment. Nitrate nitrogen(NO3-N) and electrical conductivity(EC) were similar to NPK treatment. These showed that nutrients from OC fertilizer were less likely to accumulate in soil than NPK. Also, use efficiency of nitrogen in OC100 treatment were similar to NPK treatment. These results suggest that OC application as the basal dressing at the 100% level could be best to prevent a nutrient accumulation of soil and to increase the yield and commercial quality for lettuce.

Crop yields depend on the limiting factor of crop growth; Liebig law of minimum. Identifying the kind and the necessary amount of the limiting factor is essential to increase crop yield. Although nitrogen is the most essential nutrient, N application does not always bring about yield increases when other elements are limiting in rice cultivation. Two experiments were compared to elucidate the effect of soil testing on rice yield response to N level. The one was an experiment about yield response of 3 rice cultivars to 7 levels of N application, which was conducted from 2003 to 2004 in 25 farmer's fields without ameliorating soil conditions by soil testing and the other was a demonstration experiment on N fertilizer recommendation equation by 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 times of N recommended level in 5 soil types from 30 fields after ameliorating soil conditions by soil testing. The N response patterns of the experiments conducted without soil testing showed a Mitscherlich pattern in some cultivars and soil types, but did not in the others. The N response patterns of the demonstration experiment showed a Mitscherlich pattern in all soil types. Because these results indicated that N was the minimum nutrient in the demonstration experiment by ameliorating soil conditions with soil testing, but not in the other experiment without soil testing, the supply of minimum nutrients by soil testing could increase the efficiency of N-fertilization.
Silicate (Si) fertilizers are well-known for soil amendment and to improve rice productivity as well as nitrogen efficiency. In this study, we investigated the possible reduction level of nitrogen fertilization for rice cultivation by amending Si fertilizer application. Field experiments were carried out to evaluate the productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) on a silt loam soil, where three levels of nitrogen (0, 110 and $165kg\;ha^{-1}$) were selected and Si fertilizer as a slag type was applied at 0, 1 and 2 times of the recommendation level (available $SiO_2\;130mg\;kg^{-1}$). Application of Si fertilizer increased significantly the rice yield and nitrogen efficiency. With increasing N uptake of rice, 1 and 2 times of recommended levels of Si fertilization could decrease nitrogen application level to about 76 and $102kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ to produce the target yield, the maximum yield in the non-Si amended treatment. Silicate fertilizer improved soil pH and significantly increased available phosphate and Si contents. Conclusively, the Si fertilizer could be a good alternative source for soil amendment, restoring the soil nutrient balance and to reduce the nitrogen application level in rice cultivation.
