This study was carried out to compare the protein quality of lamb and beef meat. by feeding to growing rats. Sixty weanling rats, 30 males and 30 females, were blocked into 12 groups(6 gruops of males and 6 groups of females). They were fed casein. beef, or lamb as a protein source at two levels, 6 and 15%, for 5 weeks. The amount of food intake. food efficiency ratio, protein efficiency ratio. body weight gain. and the weights of skeletal muscles and liver were measured. Nitrogen retention, protein content in the liver and skeletal muscles, and the levels of protein and cholesterol in the serum were also assayed. Summarzing the results, there were no significant differences between lamb and beef on the growth and nitrogen utilization in the rats fed same percentage of protein diet. However. rats fed 15% protein diet showed significantly higher growth rate than those fed 6%. Therefore, it can be concluded that lamb is as good a protein food as beef in terms of protein quality.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus by the variation of aeration time in four sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). In R1 which has the shortest aeration time as 1 h, MLVSS concentration in reactor decreased by the wash-out of biomass because of the poor sedimentation. The TOC removal efficiencies were almost similar in 3 reactors except R1. At the low aeration time as 1 h, the nitrification was severely inhibited by the deficiency of oxygen. ${NH_4}^+$-N removal efficiency was decreased by the decrease of aeration time. At the aeration time over 2 h, the phosphorus removal efficiency was not affected by the variation of aeration time. The nitrification was inhibited but the phosphorus release and uptake was not inhibited by the decrease of low aeration time. Therefore, we can see that the phosphorus removal microorganisms are superior to nitrification microorganisms in oxygen utilization.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hydraulic backwash load and porous ceramic media on the biological nitrogen removal efficiencies of a biological aerated filter. An upflow anoxic-oxic biological aerated filter(AO-BAF) with porous ceramic media can remove nitrogen by nitrification and denitrification in single unit. After the AO-BAF backwash, nitrogen removal efficiency was lowest and gradually increased to the steady state. Nitrification efficiency, however, showed the opposite result. It is likely that the biofilms are exposed to aerobic condition as the excess biofilms were sloughed off by backwashing
In the wastewater treatment experiment by anaerobic-aerobic packed bed unit, it was found that the high and stable removal efficiency of nitrogen could be obtained. The extent of nitrogen removal gradually decreased with the rise of recycle ratio and DO concentration. On the other hand, the extent of phosphorus increased with the increase of DO concentration. COD showed high removal efficiency over the entire range tested. The simulation of T-N behavior was carried out satisfactorily by using the kinetic equations for biofilm and the reactor model which considered the packed bed as a plug flow reactor.
The distillation column is one of large energy consumable units in the cryogenic air separation process and the accurate energy analysis of this unit is necessary for choice of energy saving process. In this work, the energy method was adopted for energy analysis of a cryogenic nitrogen distillation column. In order to designing the energy saving distillation column, the exergy distribution of feed air, exergy efficiency and exergy loss for process condition was investigated and the optimal process condition to minimize the exergy loss was found. The result from this work can be used as a guideline for the choice of the process design conditions and efficiency improvement of cryogenic distillation column.
A novel nitrogen-phosphorus compound, diphenyl piperazine-1,4-diylbis(methylphosphinate)(DPPMP) was synthesized via a two step reaction and its flame retarding efficiency as a single component additive was investigated. The success of synthesis was confirmed by FTIR and $^1H$ and $^{31}P$ NMR analysis. The product was mixed with polycarbonate (PC), poly(butylene terephtalate) (PBT), ethylene-vinyl-acetate copolymer (EVA), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). The flame-retarding efficiency was evaluated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the UL-94 vertical test methods. The addition of DPPMP enhanced the flame retardancy of the polymers and the V-0 ratings were obtained for the polymers examined in this study at a loading of 7-30 wt%. The gas-phase flame retardancy mode of action was suggested for this material from the thermogrametry experiment results.
Partial nitirification and denitrification process has been reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewater treatment with high ammonium concentration or low Carbon/Nitrogen ratio. This research was performed to survey nitrite accumulation by nitritation in treating ADEPT effluent of piggery wastewater, which contains highly concentrated ammonia. To estimate the possibility of nitrite accumulation, DO concentration and SRT were investigated as key operational parameters. This result proved that nitritation to nitrite was steadily obtained under short sludge retention time. Oxygen limitation was proved to be just a subsidiary parameter. Energy efficiency of nitritation-denitritation process was higher than complete nitrification-denitrification because external carbon requirement for denitritation could be saved. Though the influent contained significant nonbiodegradable organic substrate, total nitrogen removal efficiency was more than 51% in nitritation-denitritation system.
The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of varying levels of flaked com abomasally infused on energy metabolism and nitrogen metabolism in fattening steers. The starch levels of flaked corn of abomasally infused were 0, 300, 600 and 900 g/d. Four mature fattening steers fitted with permanent abomasum cannulas were allocated to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design were fed at 1.2 maintenance requirement a basal diet of Chinese wildrye (Aneurolepidium Chinense). Compared with 0 g/d (control group), digestible nitrogen, retention nitrogen (RN, g/d) and the efficiency of digestible nitrogen converted into retention nitrogen (RN/DN, %) of 300, 600 and 900 g/d groups were higher (p<0.05). The post-ruminal starch digestion of flaked corn were 71.36, 80.27 and 64.71 % when the amounts abomasally infused were 300, 600 and 900 g/d, respectively. When the amount of starch abomasally infused was more than 600 g/d, the post-ruminal digestion of starch decreased. 300, 600 and 900 g/d starch infusion groups showed higher metabolizable energy intake (ME) and net energy gains (NEg, MJ/d) than the control group, and the efficiencies of metabolizable energy converted into body weight (Kf, %) of these groups were higher than the control group by 38.31, 73.18 and 67.06% (p<0.05). Kf (Y, %) had a positive curved relation to starch of flaked com abomasally infused (X, g/d), $Y=36.1605X^{0.0760}$ (n=16, r=0.9308).

In this study, the optimum cutting 6equency and level of mineral nitrogen fertilization were investigated for the production of Reed canarygrass in uncultivated rice paddy. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Higher relative dry matter yields were recorded in 2nd cut of plots with 3 and 5 cutting frequencies, and 3rd cut of plot with 4 cutting kquency, respectively. 2. With no nitrogen fertilization, mean dry matter yields per year were 6.2~7.6 tonsha and the highest yield appeared in plot with 4 cutting 6equency. 3. The increased fertilization of mineral nitrogen resulted in the increased dry matter yield. Significantly higher dry matter yields than that of no nitrogen fertilization were recorded in fertilization of 90 kg nitrogen per year in 3 cutting fequency, 240 kg in 4 cutting frequency and 150 kg in 5 cutting 6equency respectively. 4. Efficiency of dry matter production with nitrogen fertilization(kg DMkg N) was higher in 30kg Nhalcut in 3 and 5 cutting eequency, 60kg Nhalcut in 4 cutting 6equency respectively. In each cutting kequency, the higher efficiency of dry matter production appeared in 1st cut in 3 cutting kequency, and 2nd cut in 4 and 5 cutting 6equency respectively. 5. Economic N level(kg/ha) was 179.5~242.3kg/ha in 3 cutting 6equency, and 189.6-241.6kg/ha and 167.0 ~253.2kg/ha in 4 and 5 cutting 6equency respectively, and marginal dry matter yields were 11.4~ 12.3 tons/ ha, 11.2 ~ 11.8 tons/ha and 8.3 ~9.1 tons/ha in 3, 4 and 5 cutting 6equency respectively. 6. The limiting N fertilization level to the highest dry matter were estimated to be 569.9kg/ha, 492.4kg/ha and 654.lkg/ha in 3, 4 and 5 cutting kequency respectively.
This study investigated the characteristic of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process to treat the sewage having low carbon/nitrogen ratio (Biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$):Total nitrogen (T-N), 4.5:1) in sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The removal efficiency of $BOD_5$, suspended solid (SS), T-N and phosphorus ($PO_4{^{3-}}$-P) were 92.6%, 64.3% and 90.1%. Concentration and size of AGS were changed in proportion to the organic matters and nitrogen concentration of the influent (Concentration and size of AGS: 1,700-3,000 mg/L, 0.5-1.0 mm). Mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) also changed with the concentration of AGS (MLSS: 2,000-3,500 mg/L). When the settling time was shortened from 15 min to 10 min, size and shape of AGS were maintained (Size of AGS: 1.0-1.5 mm). In addition, the concentration of AGS and MLSS increased (Concentration of AGS: 3,500 mg/L, MLSS: 4,000 mg/L). Concentration, size and shape of AGS were affected the settling time of the reactor more than the concentration of organic matter and nitrogen in the influent. In the results of removal efficiency and changes in AGS, we confirmed that the SBR process using AGS can be used to treat the sewage having low carbon/nitrogen ratio by applying short settling time.
