This study was conducted to investigate the integrated control strategy against pear black leaf spot disease. Using indicator plant PS-95 we selected six virus-free trees (cv. Niitaka) from commercial orchards in the major pear production area. Disease symptom by pear black leaf spot in the shoot of pear (Niitaka) has been successfully inhibited by heat treatments for 3 weeks at temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ (day) and $32^{\circ}C$ (night) or 4 weeks at $37^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, survival rate of the shoot tips on stocks was low. Seven cultivars Niitaka, Imamura- aki, Waseaka, Nijisseiki, Wasenijisseiki, Shinsetsu and Whangkeumbae produced visible symptoms in the first year after inoculation with the virus. Other 11 selections remained symptomless. Two resistant cultivars Suwhangbae and Gamcheonbae were selected, which showed high fruit quality. It is recommended that these cultivars could be top-grafted onto the infected Niitaka trees to overcome the damage caused by the disease in the orchard.
Alternaria spp.were predominantly isolated from the abnormal leaf spot lesions of pear cultivars Niitaka and Nijiiseiki. Alternaria isolates from the cultivar Niitaka were not pathogenic to both cultivars, but the isolates from the cultivar Nijiiseiki developed typical lesions of black leaf spots and were identified as A. kikuchiana. However, no typical abnormal leaf spot lesions were produced by the Alternaria isolates. Foliar spray of twelve different agrochemicals including lime sulfur, either alone or in combinations, with 7 times applications from April to July failed to reduced the disease development. Application of 17 different pesticides including fungicides, insecticides and herbicides currently used in pear orchards did not cause leaf injury similar to the abnormal leaf spot. Simulated acid rain of as low as pH 3.0 did not incite any leaf lesions alike the abnormal spot lesions. Mineral contents in the leaves of both cultivars did not differ significantly between the healthy leaves and those with abnormal leaf spots. When cuttings of pear tree were obtained in February from newly emerged twigs of the healthy or the diseased trees of Niitaka and planted in sand in the greenhouse, only those from the diseased trees developed typical leaf lesions of the abnormal spot. These results indicate that abnormal leaf spots are caused by unknown systemic agents in pear trees, rather than by Alternaria spp., chemical injury or acid rain.
This study was conducted to explore which pollen type could be an effective pollen source for self-incompatible 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai), when different pollinizers were to be applied. The pollens of five different pears with similar flowering times were applied to bagged 'Niitaka' flowers grown in Cheonan city, Korea. Pollen types used were of different origins including Korean pears ('Wonhwang' and 'Chuhwangbae'), Japanese pears ('Chojuuro' and 'Okusankichi'), and Chinese pear ('Yali'). Results show that the amount of pollen produced by flowers of each cultivar was the largest in Korean pear 'Wonhwang' (234 g/100 flowers) and the smallest in Japanese pear 'Okusankichi' (126 g/100 flowers). A high proportion of large fruits (> 600 g), 71.4% of total production, was found in the fruits treated with 'Yali' pollen. However, these fruits showed an unfavorable external appearance. Based on individual fruit width differences, 'Chojuuro' treatment produced the smallest difference in fruit diameters (3.2 mm) and 'Yali' treatment' gave the largest (4.8 mm). Also, the difference in fruit length was the largest in 'Yali' (7.5 mm), which also produced the most uneven fruits among the pollinizers used. Meanwhile, the use of pollens of 'Wonhwang' and 'Chuhwangbae' improved productivity by increasing the fruit shape index and the ratio of bigger fruits in total production. Moreover, those pollens also decreased the development of lenticels on fruit skins which gave them a smoother appearance.
In this study, we evaluated the differences in fruit development and quality indices of fruits subjected to blossom thinning before full bloom in 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka' pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). We carried out a thinning treatments at 5 days before full bloom, targeting the blossoms at the 1st and 2nd position (T1) or the blossoms at the 6th and 7th position (T2) from the basal part of the flower cluster in both cultivars. Blossom thinning treatments increased the average fruit weight of early-season Asian pear 'Hanareum' up to 10.5% (T1) and 11.0% (T2) at harvest time (110 days after full bloom). The mid-season 'Niitaka' pear showed increased fruit weight of up to 12.6% (T1) and 16.8% (T2) at harvest time (170 days after full bloom). Moreover, these treatments increased the production rate of bigger sized fruits in both cultivars. Removal of blooms also affected fruit quality indices; the bloom-thinned fruits showed higher soluble solids contents (about $1^{\circ}Brix$) and higher skin color redness ($a^*$) especially in 'Niitaka' pears when compared to the non-thinned controls. Overall, the treatments increased the fruit size and weight as well as fruit quality including soluble solids and skin color. Bloom thinning treatment targeting the 6th to 7th blossom from the basal part of the flower cluster may be recommended as the practical thinning method in Asian pear 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka'.
BACKGROUND: Caused by cultural environment, the fruit skin stain results in serious damages to pear fruit. Particularly susceptible to this damage, 'Niitaka' pear accounts for 82% of pear cultivation in Korea and many farmers growing the pear trees have suffered economic losses due to fruit skin stain. This study investigated the effect of different treatments of 'Niitaka' pear during growing period on the occurrence of fruit skin stain. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments in the field included gibberellin (GA) paste, spraying with amino acid tree fertilizer, functional bagging, and coating of the inner paper bag with agents. The relationships between tree vigor, mineral nutrition concentration and fruit skin stain occurrence were also investigated. The fruit skin stain symptoms occurred from young fruit (May 25) until harvest. There was no exposed fruit flesh. The occurrence of fruit skin stain was significantly reduced in normal tree (shoot length 110 cm), as well as using GA paste treatment, and bagging in calcium and lime sulfur coated bags. However, spraying with amino acid tree fertilizer made no difference in comparison to control. In addition, bags in which the inner paper was coated with lime sulfur and soybean oil resulted in chemical injury to the fruit skin caused by bagging. The K concentration of shoot wood and fruit skin were higher than those of the control. Also, there were lower T-N, K concentration of leaf. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that occurrence of fruit skin stain in 'Niitaka' pear fruits during the growing period can be reduced by GA paste and bagging in calcium and lime sulfur coated bags. The symptoms of chemical injury to the fruit skin caused by bagging in lime sulfur and soybean oil coated inner paper were different compared to skin stain occurring in fruit during the growing period.

The characteristics of fruit ripening and cell wall modifications of two oriental pear fruits were compared during storage. The loss of fresh weight was lower in 'Pingguoli' than 'Niitaka', probably due to the difference in wax accumulation and skin structure. 'Pingguoli' produced much higher amount of ethylene and showed climacteric ripening pattern, but this response was not found in 'Niitaka'. A significant difference in soluble pectin contents was found, thus, the amount of water soluble pectins were much higher in 'Niitaka' at harvest but this difference was not significant at later stage of storage. A severe loss of water soluble pectins in 'Niitaka' was confirmed whereas a similar tendency was not found in CDTA soluble ones. Even the amount of $Na_2CO_3$ soluble pectins was relatively low, 'Pingguoli' contained approximately 2 times higher than 'Niitaka' and both cultivars showed an increasing tendency in $Na_2CO_3$ soluble polymers at later stage of storage. No significant difference in alkali soluble polysaccharides (hemicelluloses fraction) was found between both cultivars. There was a significant change in gel filtration profiles regardless of cultivars, especially in water soluble pectins resulting from severe depolymerization probably due to degradation of higher molecular weight pectins and loss of their side chains. In gel filtration profiles of $Na_2CO_3$ soluble pectins, neutral sugars were evenly distributed regardless of molecular size of pectic polymers but the decrease of high molecular weight fraction was found. In comparison of alkali soluble polymers, a similar trend was found, that is, there was no difference in gel filtration profiles but 'Niitaka' seemed to have longer side chains in alkali soluble polysaccharides in both 4% and 24% of KOH soluble fractions.
This study was conducted to evaluate the control effect of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) for Venturia nashicola on Niitaka pear during flowering period. As a nontoxic disinfectant, sodium dichloroisocyanurate is widely used in the field of hygiene and disease prevention, medical treatment, aquiculture as well as plant protection. NaDCC was sprayed on the pear tree inoculated with conidia ($4.5{\times}10^5spores/mL$) of Venturia nashicola and as a result the incidence of pear scab was 23.8% in 750mg/L and 26.2% in 1,000mg/L compare to the 51.6% incidence in untreated tree. No damage in the pollen of pear flower was detected with NaDCC treatments in the full bloom period for six pear cultivar including Wonwhang. A NaDCC single treatment in the early bloom of Niitaka pear showed more than 98% of fertilization rate. Furthermore, there was no incidence of Venturia nashicola on Nitaka pear trees treated with NaDCC 4 times during their growth period.
The study was conducted to investigate effects of different organic fertilizers on 'Niitaka' pear tree performances in a controlled greenhouse. The four 'Niitaka' pear seedling trees per treatment were grown in a greenhouse for 6 months. Each pot was filled with control, rice bran (RB), coffee bran compost (CBC), and the mixture (RCC) of RB + CBC + chitin incubated compost (CIC). Each pot was filled with 1:1:1 (v/v/v) of soil : sand : fertilizer, and control, RB, CBC, CIC, and RCC were applied as treatments. Root fresh weights and root activities were increased by all the organic fertilizers, especially by RCC. RCC treated trees had the highest tree height and thickest tree trunk, and all organic fertilized trees showed increased tree growth compared to the control. The more diseased and damaged degrees on the leaf by spider mites increased leaf falling rates on all the treatments. The reduced diseased and healthy leaves were found on RCC treated trees that had better tree performance. Also, all the organic fertilized trees seemed to prevent the occurrence of disease in the leaf. Therefore, the organic fertilizer applications could be a good strategy to obtain better tree performance and maintain healthy seedlings in the nursery market or young organic pear orchard.
This research was carried out to elucidate the causes of fruit skin browning in 'Mansu' pear for the last 2 years. It was observed that skin browning was induced even by the small mechanical injury produced during grading and packing for the market supplies after harvest on the fruits of 'Mansu' pear. The incidences of fruit skin browning in pears treated with artificial mechanical injuries were investigated between 'Niitaka' and 'Mansu' pears. The results showed that fruits of 'Mansu' are more susceptible to skin browning than those of 'Niitaka', We also found that the epidermis of fruits in 'Mansu' pear was thinner than that of 'Niitaka', and that there was lower incidence of fruit browning in epidermis of pears with high chlorophyll content than those with low chlorophyll content. The skin browning in fruits could be considerably reduced by sorting and grading them wrapped with paper bags for the fruits of 'Mansu' pear.
This study was conducted to find the potential of polyethylene wrapping, ethylene scrubber, and Prolong as postharvest application in oriental pear, 'Niitaka'. Polyethylene film($30{\mu}m$) wrapping greatly reduced weight loss during storage for 80 to 110 days but the occurrence of dark skin browning became severe because of high humidity in polyethylene bags. Also, in long term storage of 110 days, parts of fruit developed uneven skin disorder or rupturing of cuticle layer. Ethylene scrubber reduced uneven skin disorder but no beneficial effect was found on the prevention of core breakdown. This indicates that the ethylene scrubber probably be effective when applied dicrectly to the storage room. The immediate application of Prolong to harverted fruit was confirmed not to be useful as postharvest treatment in 'Niitaka' pears.
