  • Heavy metal ingredients of eyeliner product could cause side effect ranging from simple irritation, keratitis, corneal epithelium inflammation, eyelid dermatitis and dry eye symptoms have been reported. This study was conducted in order to prepare fundamental data for acceptable quality level heavy metal ingredients in the domestic and foreign cosmetic brand eyeliner products and to assess theirs the heavy metal concentrations. We measured the concentration of 5 heavy metals in 10 eyeliner products using ICP/MS-LC. According to the results, the average metal concentrations were as follows.; In case of domestic eyeliner products, 289.4 ppm for aluminium(Al), 304 ppm for manganese(Mn), 44 ppm for nickel(Ni), 0.58 ppm for arsenic(As) and 0.35 ppm for lead(Pb). In case of Foreign eyeliner products, 11337.8 ppm for aluminium(Al), 1678.8 ppm for manganese(Mn), 74.2 ppm for nickel(Ni), 1 ppm for arsenic(As) and 0.8 ppm for lead(Pb). Foreign products contained higher amounts of the two elements(Pb, As) compared to domestic ones. Also, greater concentrations of arsenic(As) were detected from waterproof products than non-waterproof ones. In conclusion, for safety reasons we suggested the amounts of heavy metals from the domestic and foreign eyeliner products. This finding will be helpful to provide the fundamental data which is standard of toxicological heavy metals acceptable on eyeliner products.

  • We have investigated the infrared spectra for CO adsorbed on silica supported nickel(Ni-Si$O_2$), silica supported copper(Cu-Si$O_2$), silica supported nickel-copper alloys(Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$) of several compositions with varying CO pressures(0.2 $torr{\sim}$50 torr) at room temperature and on pumping to vacumn at room temperature within the frequency range of 1500 $cm^{-1}{\sim}2500\;cm^{-1}$. Four bands(2059.6 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$2036.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$ 1868.7 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$ 1697.1 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Ni-Si$O_2$, two bands($\sim$2115.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1743.0 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Cu-Si$O_2$ and five bands(${\sim}2123.2\;cm^{-1}$, 2059.6 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$2036.4 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1899.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1697.1 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$. These absorption bands correspond with those of the previous reports approximately. The bands below 1800 $cm^{-1}$ were only observed with Ni metal or Ni/Cu alloy crystal plane containing step at room temperature and the ${\sim}1697.1\;cm^{-1}$ bands observed with Ni-Si$O_2$ and Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$ may be ascribed to CO molecule adsorbed on the adsorption sites near step. The bands below 2000 $cm^{-1}$ were rarely observed with Cu metal crystal plane at room temperature and the 1743.0 $cm^{-1}$ bands may be ascribed to CO molecule adsorbed on the adsorption sites near step. The band shifts of adsorbed CO with varing Cu contents from 0 to 0.5 mole fraction at the same CO pressure or at the same pumping time to vacumn were below 21 $cm^{-1}$. and comparatively small than those with other ⅠB metal addition. It may means ligand effect of Cu d electron is small.

  • To study the optical transmittance through nickel thin films with various thicknesses. Methods: We measured the optical transmittance through thin nickel film with various thicknesses. Results: The thickness dependence of the optical transmittance through nickel thin films deposited by thermal evaporation had been investigated. The optical transmittance rapidly decreased with the Ni film thickness less than 70 nm while it slightly decreased with the thickness more than 70 nm. In the experiment of optical dispersion, most of the light transmitted in the incidence direction. The result of experiment showed that optical dispersion was negligibly. Conclusions: Optical transmittance exponentially decreased as nickel thin film thickness increased.

  • The current study aims to study the impacts of the substitution of magnesium with nickel concentrations on physical and γ-ray shielding capacity of magnesium alloys. The density of the magnesium alloys under study is varied from 3.677 g/cm3 to 5.652 g/cm3, with raising the nickel content from 26.7 wt% to 54.8 wt% and reducing the magnesium concentration from 72.6 wt% to 44.2 wt%, respectively. Additionally, the examination of the γ-ray shielding capacity using the Monte Carlo simulation code shows that the substitution of magnesium by nickel content in the magnesium alloys was associated with an enhancement in the γ-ray shielding capacity, where the linear attenuation coefficient for the studied alloys was enhanced by 53.22 %, 52.45 %, and 52.52 % at γ-ray energies of 0.662 MeV, 1.252 MeV, and 1.408 MeV, respectively, with raising the nickel concentration from 26.7 wt% to 54.8 wt%. Simultaneously, the half-value thickness for magnesium alloys was reduced from 2.47 cm to 1.62 cm (at gamma ray energy of 0.662 MeV), from 3.39 cm to 2.22 cm (at gamma ray energy of 1.252 MeV), and from 3.60 cm to 2.36 cm (at gamma ray energy of 1.408 MeV), raising the nickel concentration from 26.7 wt % to 54.8 wt%, respectively. The study shows that the substitution of magnesium for nickel greatly enhanced the radiation shielding capacity of the magnesium alloys.

  • Ni-15at.% W coatings with film thicknesses of 20-40 ㎛ were electroplated on a steel substrate, and their oxidation behavior was investigated at 700 and 800℃ in air. For comparison, a pure Ni coating and a bulk Ni were also oxidized. The Ni-15at.%W coating displayed the worst oxidation resistance, due to the formation of less-protective NiO, Fe₂O₃, NiFe₂O₄ and NiWO₄. The corrosion behavior Ni-15at.%W coatings electroplated on a steel substrate was similarly investigated at 700 and 800℃ in the Ar-l%SO₂ atmosphere. For comparison, the uncoated steel substrate was also corrosion-tested in the Ar-l %SO₂ atmosphere. Severe scale spallation and the internal corrosion of the steel that occurred in the uncoated substrate were not observed in the coated specimen. However, it seemed that the Ni-15at.%W coating cannot be a potential candidate as a sulfidation-resistant coating, due to the formation of less-protective NiO, NiS, WO₃ and NiWO₄.

  • We tried to measure the fixed quantity of $Ni^{2+}$ion among the metals which were eluted by distilled water from the Fly Ash Leach Liquor(FALL) with a spectrophotometric method. In addition, we researched absorbance values which had different contained quantity of $V^{3+}$ion in contrast with $Ni^{2+}$ion ppm to find out the influence of the $V^{3+}$ion existed in the FALL on the spectrophotometric fixed quantity of $Ni^{2+}$ion. As a result, when $V^{3+}$ ion has below 50% of amount of $Ni^{2+}$ion, the fixed quantity of $Ni^{2+}$ion among the FALL was able to be confirmed by spectrophotometry.

  • In order to develop alloy resistance in aggressive sulphat ion, the corrosion behavior of metallic glasses $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$, $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ (at %) at different concentrations of $H_2SO_4$ solutions was examined by electrochemical methods and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Microscopy (XPS) analyses. The corrosion kinetics and passivation behavior was studied. A direct proportion was observed between the corrosion rate and acid concentration in the case of $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloys. Critical concentration was observed in the case of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ alloy. The influence of the alloying element is reflected in the increasing resistance of the protective film. XPS analysis confirms that the protection film on the $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ alloy was NiS which is less protective than that formed on Cr containing alloys. The corrosion rate of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$. alloys containing 7% and 13% Cr are $7.90-26.1{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/y which is lower about 43-54 times of the alloy $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ (free of Cr). The high resistance of $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloy at the very aggressive media may due to thicker passive film of $Cr_2O_3$ which hydrated to hydrated chromium oxyhydroxide.

  • Ni catalysts on mesoporous silica and commercial silica were prepared for the methanation. XRD and TPR analyses indicated that Ni/mesoporous silica had smaller metal particle size and higher metal dispersion than that of Ni/commercial silica. In addition, Ni/mesoporous silica had stronger metal-support interaction. In methanation, Ni/mesoporous silica showed higher CO conversion and methane yield (65%) than Ni/commercial silica (58%). In the characterization results of catalysts after reaction, Ni/commercial silica was deactivated by the collapse of structure and metal sintering, but Ni/mesoporous silica showed stable catalytic performance.

  • Synthetic natural gas was producd by the reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen via methanation. Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst supported on $Al_2O_3$ for methanation was prepared using deposition-precipitation method. For the comparison, Ni, Co monometallic catalyst was prepared using the same method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by TEM, XRD and TPR and applied to methanation reaction. The catalysts prepared using deposition-precipitation method showed the high metal dispersion. The activity of Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst was higher than that of Ni, Co monometallic catalyst. TPR measurements indicated that Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst had more active hydrogen species than Ni, Co monometallic catalyst due to the synergetic effect in the presence of Ni and Co.

  • Objectives: This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files obtained in a conventional test using a simulated canal with a newly developed method that allows the application of constant fatigue load conditions. Materials and Methods: ProFile and K3 files of #25/.06, #30/.06, and #40/.04 were selected. Two types of testing devices were built to test their fatigue performance. The first (conventional) device prescribed curvature inside a simulated canal (C-test), the second new device exerted a constant load (L-test) whilst allowing any resulting curvature. Ten new instruments of each size and brand were tested with each device. The files were rotated until fracture and the number of cycles to failure (NCF) was determined. The NCF were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Duncan's post-hoc test for each method. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was computed to examine any association between methods. Results: Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (${\rho}$ = -0.905) showed a significant negative correlation between methods. Groups with significant difference after the L-test divided into 4 clusters, whilst the C-test gave just 2 clusters. From the L-test, considering the negative correlation of NCF, K3 gave a significantly lower fatigue resistance than ProFile as in the C-test. K3 #30/.06 showed a lower fatigue resistance than K3 #25/.06, which was not found by the C-test. Variation in fatigue test methodology resulted in different cyclic fatigue resistance rankings for various NiTi files. Conclusions: The new methodology standardized the load during fatigue testing, allowing determination fatigue behavior under constant load conditions.
