Piezoelectric Properties of 0.65Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3-0.35Pb(Zn1/6Ni1/6Nb2/3)O3 Ceramics and Their Application to Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (0.65Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3-0.35Pb(Zn1/6Ni1/6Nb2/3)O3 세라믹의 압전 특성 및 압전 에너지 하베스터 적용)

  • The piezoelectric properties of $0.65Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3-0.35Pb(Zn_{1/6}Ni_{1/6}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ ($PZT_x-PZNN$) ceramics with $0.530{\leq}x{\leq}0.555$ were investigated for application to piezoelectric energy harvesters. Although a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was found at approximately x = 0.545, the ceramic with the highest figure of merit (FOM) ($d_{33}{\times}g_{33}$) was observed at a composition of x = 0.540. Values of this figure of merit, $d_{33}{\times}g_{33}$, of $19.6pm^2/N$ and $20.2pm^2/N$ were obtained from $PZT_{0.540}-PZNN$ ceramics sintered at $920^{\circ}C$ and $950^{\circ}C$, respectively. A high output power of $937{\mu}W$ and a high power density of $3.3mW/cm^3$ were obtained from unimorph-type piezoelectric energy harvesters fabricated using $PZT_{0.540}-PZNN$ ceramic sintered at $920^{\circ}C$ for 4h.

  • In an effort to develop alternative single buffer layer technology for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) coated conductors, we have investigated both LaMnO$_3$, (LMO) and La$_2$Zr$_2$O$_{7}$ (LZO) as potential buffer layers. High-quality LMO films were grown directly on textured Ni and Ni-W (3%) substrates using rf magnetron sputtering. Highly textured LZO buffers were grown on textured Ni substrates using sol-gel alkoxide processing route. YBCO films were then grown on both LMO and LZO buffers using pulsed laser deposition. Detailed X-ray studies have shown that YBCO films were grown on both LMO and LZO layers with a single epitaxial orientation. A high J$_{c}$ of over 1 MA/cm$^2$ at 77 K and self-field was obtained on YBCO films grown on both LMO-buffered Ni or Ni-W substrates, and also on LZO-buffered Ni substrates. We have identified LaMnO$_3$ as a good diffusion barrier layer for Ni and it also provides a good template for growing high current density YBCO films. Similarly we have also demonstrated the growth of high J$_{c}$ YBCO films on all solution buffers. We will discuss in detail about our buffer deposition processes. processes.s.s.s.s.

Studies on the Separation and Preconcentration of Metal Ions by XAD-16-[4-(2-thiazolylazo)] orcinol Chelating Resin (XAD-16-[4-(2-thiazolylazo)]orcinol 킬레이트 수지에 의한 금속이온의 분리 및 농축에 관한 연구)

  • The sorption and desorption properties of U(VI), Th(IV), Zr(IV), Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) ions on XAD-16-[4-(2-thiazolylazo)orcinol] (TAO) chelating resin were studied by elution method. The effect was examined with respect to overall capacity of each metal ion, separation of mixed metal ions, flow rate and concentration of buffer solution for optimum condition of sorption. The overall capacities of some metal ions on this chelating resin were 0.35nmol U(VI)/g resin, 0.49nmol Th(IV)/g resin, 0.41nmol Cu(II)/g resin, and 0.31nmol Zr(IV)/g resin, respectively. The elution order of metal ions obtained from breakthrough capacity and overall capacity at pH 5.0 was Th(IV)>Cu(II)>U(VI)>Zr(IV)>Pb(II)>Ni(II)>Zn(II)>Mn(II)>Cd(II). The group separation of mixed metal ions was possible by increasing pH in pH range 2~5 at a flow rate of 0.28mL/min. Characteristics of desorption were investigated with desorption agents such as $HNO_3$, HCl, $HClO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, and $Na_2CO_3$. It was found that 2M $HNO_3$ showed high desorption efficiency to most of metal ions except Zr(IV) ion. Also, desorption and recovery of Zr(IV) ion were successfully performed with 1M $H_2SO_4$. Recovery of trace amount of U(VI) ion from artificial sea water was over 94%. The chelating resin, XAD-16-TAO was successfully applied to group separation of rare earth metal ions from U(VI) by using 2M $HNO_3$ as an eluent.

Petrology of Puu Oo lavas from the Big Island, Hawaii (하와이, 빅 아일랜드의 푸우오오 용암에 대한 암석학적 연구)

  • The Puu Oo eruption in Hawaii since 1983 is one of the largest eruptions on Hawaii's volcanic history with prominent compositional variation ($5.6{\sim}10.1wt.%$ in MgO content). Although intense researches of Hawaiian eruption have been conducted for recent years, there is no up-to-date study on Puu Oo lavas that is erupting hot lavas today. in oder to obtain basic information on the geological characteristics of the eruption including any noticeable change in its petrological trend and magma dynamics, we applied several geological approaches such as field survey, systematic sampling, petrography, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Clinopyroxene and Plagioclase phenocrysts are rarely observed on the thin section, however Olivine crysts are much more obvious in the study area. It indicates that Puu Oo is early stage of magma differentiation. Variation diagram of whole rock composition shows that the elements such as $TiO_2,\;Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2$ and $Na_2O$ decrease with increasing MgO. In the trace element Sr, Y Zr and V versus $K_2O$, P18, P19 samples are plotted in primitive area. Variations of the Ni contents during $2003{\sim}2006$ may suggest a sudden change in magma composition probably caused by new magma injection.

  • Ni/YSZ ($Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$) composite powder for a cathode material in high temperature electrolysis(HTE) was synthesized by a mechanical alloying method with Ni and YSZ powder. Microstructure of the composite and cell thickness for HTE reaction has been analyzed with various techniques of XRD, SEM to investigate effects of fabrication conditions. Employing the composite material, furthermore, the unit cell for HTE has been studied to evolve hydrogen from water. XRD patterns showed that the composites after wet mechanical alloying were composed of respective nano-sized crystalline Ni and YSZ. While ethanol as additive for mechanical alloying increased to $20\;{\mu}m$ of average particle size of the composites, alpha-terpineol effectively decreased to sub-micro size of that. This study has been found out the evolution of hydrogen by HTE reaction employing the fabricated cathode material, showing 1.4 ml/min of $H_2$ generation rate as increasing $20\;{\mu}m$ of cathode thickness.

  • In order to fabricate the piezoelectric thin film of the PZT-PNN ternary compound, the metal alkoxides were used as starting materials. The electrical and crystalline properties of the thin film were evaluated. The X- RD study shows that the crystallization of the film is optimized at $550^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature. According to the D-E hysterisis curve, the coercive field is 28.8 kV /cm, and the remanent polariztion is $18.3\;{\mu}C/cm^{2}$. The break down voltages of the thin films are $76.0\;{\sim}\;27.0\;MV/m$. When the sintering temperature is raised, the break down voltage is lowered. As a result of measuring the C-V characteristic curve of the ternary compound piezoelectric thin film, the relative dielectric constants are 406 for the composition (50:40:10), 1084 for the composition (50:30:20), 723 for the composition (45:35:20) and 316 for the composition (40:40:20).

  • Colored Cubic Zircona(CCZ) single crystals were grown by the skull melting method. The grown crystals were doped with up to 0.1wt% transition (Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Fe, Mo, Cr, V, Mn) metal ions on ZrO2-Y2O3(9.5~10mol%) and their Optical transmission spectra(λ=300~800nm)data were obtained. Various colors were pronounced due to dopant effects in the grown Crystals.

Banded Iron Formations in Congo: A Review

  • In the Republic of Congo, Banded iron formations (BIFs) occur in two areas: the Chaillu Massif and the Ivindo Basement Complex, which are segments of the Archean Congo craton outcropping in the northwestern and southwestern parts of the country. They show interesting potential with significant mineral resources reaching 2 Bt and grades up to 60% Fe. BIFs consist mostly of oxide-rich facies (hematite/magnetite), but carbonate-rich facies are also highlighted. They are found across the country within the similar geological sequences composed of amphibolites, gneisses and greenschists. The Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized patterns of BIFs show enrichment in elements such as SiO2, Fe2O3, CaO, P2O5, Cr, Cu, Zn, Nb, Hf, U and depletion in TiO2, Al2O3, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Sc, Th, Ba, Zr, Rb, Ni, V. REE diagrams show slight light REEs (rare earth elements; LREEs) compared to heavy REEs (HREEs), and positive La and Eu anomalies. The lithological associations, as well as the very high (Eu/Eu*)SN ratios> 1.8 shown by the BIFs, suggest that they are related to Algoma-type BIFs. The positive correlations between Zr and TiO2, Al2O3, Hf suggest that the contamination comes mainly from felsic rocks, while the absence of correlations between MgO and Cr, Ni argues for negligeable contributions from mafic sources. Pr/Pr* vs. Ce/Ce* diagram indicates that the Congolese BIFs were formed in basins with redox heterogeneity, which varies from suboxic to anoxic and from oxic to anoxic conditions. They were formed through hydrothermal vents in the seawater, with relatively low proportions of detrital inputs derived from igneous sources through continental weathering. Some Congolese BIFs show high contents in Cr, Ni and Cu, which suggest that iron (Fe) and silicon (Si) have been leached through hydrothermal processes associated with submarine volcanism. We discussed their tectonic setting and depositional environment and proposed that they were deposited in extensional back-arc basins, which also recorded hydrothermal vent fluids.

Piezoelectric and Dielectric Properties of Low Temperature Sintered Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)0.02(Ni1/3Nb2/30.12(ZrxTi1-x)0.86O3 System Ceramics

  • In this study, in order to develop compositions of ceramics suitable for piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic vibrator applications using low temperature sintering, multilayer, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ as sintering aids. Their structural, piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the Zr/Ti ratio. As the Zr/Ti ratio increased, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all increased with Zr/Ti ratio and then decreased after the ratio exceeded 50/50. At the ratio of Zr/Ti =49/51 and sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$; the density, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r$ piezoelectric $d_{33}$ constant and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all showed the optimum values of 7.900 $g/cm^3$, 0.576, 856, 312 pC/N, 1,326, respectively. These property values are very suitable for multilayer ceramics actuator applications.

An SOFC Cathode Composed of LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3 and Ce(Ln)O2 (Ln=Sm, Gd, Pr)

  • We fabricated single cells with a cathode consisting of a $LaNi_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}O_3-Ce_{0.8}Sm_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ composite (LNF-S20DC composite) active layer and an LNF current collecting layer on a ${0.89ZrO_2}-{0.10Sc_2}{O_3}-0.01{Al_2}{O_3}$ electrolyte sheet. The cathode layers were prepared by the screen-printing method. The cathode properties of these cells were measured by the AC impedance method at $800^{\circ}C$. The cathodes with the ceria-LNF composite active layer exhibited high power performance prior to current loading. We investigated the influence of the mixture ratio of LNF and S20DC on the cathodes properties. The Sm in the ceria particles of the composite cathode was substituted with other rare-earth elements. Cathodes with Pr and Gd co-doped ceria in the active layer provided the better performance than those with Sm- or Gd-doped ceria.
