Growth Kinetics and Electronic Properties of Passive Film of Nickel in Borate Buffer Solution (Borate 완충용액에서 니켈 산화피막의 생성 과정과 전기적 성질)

  • In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on nickel were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and single- or multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of nickel has showed the electronic properties of p-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation. It was found out that the passive film ($Ni(OH)_2$) of Ni formed in the low electrode potential changes to NiO and NiO(OH) while the electrode potential increases.

  • In this study we investigated the electrocatalytic oxidation of saccharose on conductive polymer- Nickel oxide modified graphite electrodes based on the ability of anionic surfactants to form micelles in aqueous media. This NiO modified electrode showed higher electrocatalytic activity than Ni rode electrode in electrocatalytic oxidation of saccharose. The anodic peak currents show linear dependency with the square root of scan rate. This behavior is the characteristic of a diffusion controlled process. Under the CA regime the reaction followed a Cottrellian behavior and the diffusion coefficient of saccharose was found in agreement with the values obtained from CV measurements.

  • Preparation and characteristics of electroless Ni-P and Ni-B systems for semiconducting ceramics have been investigated as a function of deposit rate, reducing agent and pH variation. The effect of DMAB as ruducing agent is greater than that of sodium hypophosphite. The nickel electrode prepared from the nickel-phosphorus system with sodium hypophosphite shows low contact resistance of 0.99ohm compared with the resistance of 10chm in the electrode prepared from the nickel-boron system with DMAB. The contact resistance increases with increasing pH valuein the nickel-phosphorus system with sodium hypophosphite. The ratio of Ni to P is about 76.0/24.0 for the contact resistance of 0.99ohm in the above system.

  • The discharge capacity of V-Ti-Ni(V-rich) metal hydride electrode during the charge-discharge cycling was investigated in KOH electrolyte. All electrodes were degraded within 25 cycles. To investigate the cause of the degradation phenomena impedance measurements were performed by using E.I.S(electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The surfaces of the degraded electrodes were examined by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was observed that all electrodes were covered with oxygen from the surface to the bulk, titanium was enriched near surface, and vanadium was dissolved from the surface to the bulk.

  • The research and development for the solid oxide fuel cell have been promoted rapidly and extensively in recent years, because of their high efficiency and future potential. Therefore this paper describes the manufacturing method and characteristics of anode electrode for SOFC, by the way, Ni-YSZ materials are used as anode of SOFC widely. So in this experiments, we investigated the optimum content of Ni, by testing expansion coefficient, impedance characteristics, overvoltage. As a result, the performance of Ni-YSZ anode(40vol%) was better excellent than the others.

  • An electrode was prepared by dip-coating NiFe2O4 powder on stainless steel (SUS) support for the application in the alkaline water electrolysis. The prepared electrode was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), and was evaluated for the voltage properties with the change of current density in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrgen evolution reaction (HER) using 1, 3 and 7 M KOH solution. From the SEM and EDXS analysis, it was confirmed that the prepared electrode had NiFe2O4 on the SUS support. In OER and HER, the voltage in the 7 M KOH solution had a value of 1.35 and -1.90 V at 0.2 and -0.2 A/cm2 of the current density, respectively. It was considered that the prepared electrode could be use as an electrode in the alkaline water electrolysis from the experimental results.

  • It has been investigated the effects of alloying elements and binders on the corrosion behavior of metal hydride electrodes for anode of Ni/MH secondary battery. The $AB_5$-type alloys, $(LM)Ni_{4.49}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.205}Al_{0.205}$ and $(LM)Ni_{3.6}Co_{0.7}Mn_{0.3}Al_{0.4}$, were used for the experiments. The electrodes were prepared by mixing and cold-pressing of alloy powders with Si sealent or PTFE powders, or cold-pressing the electroless copper coated alloy powders. The amount of copper coating was 20wt%. In order to examine corrosion behavior of the electrodes, the corrosion current and the current density, in 6M KOH aqueous solution after removal of oxygen in the solution, were measured by potentiodynamic and cyclic voltamo methods. The results showed that Co in the alloy increased corrosion resistance of the electrode whereas Ni decreased the stability of the electrode during the charge-discharge cycles. The electrode used Si sealant as a binder showed a lower corrosion current density than the electrode used PTFE and the electrode used Cu-coated alloy powders showed the best corrosion resistance.

  • $ZrV_{0.7}Mn_{0.5}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy is attractive for anode material in Ni/MH secondary battery because of its large hydrogen storage capacity in gas-solid reaction and long cycling durability in KOH electrolyte. In this work, in order to further improve the discharge performance of this alloy electrode, the alloy was annealed by optimal condition which is for 12 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$. The alloy annealed under optimal condition had higher rate capability and discharge capacity than as-cast one. The microstructure of the as-cast and annealed alloy was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Ni content in the matrix was increased, being this homogenized after annealing. Additionally, The measurement of the surface area by B.E.T. analysis showed that there was little difference as-cast and annealed alloy. Therefore, improvement in the rate capability of the annealed alloy is due to increase of Ni content in the matrix.
